HUSTLE: The Only Thing A Player Can Always Do Right
As ballplayers, we understand that there are two certainties about the game of baseball. One - we're not always going to hit the ball, and two - we're not always going to catch the ball. Players remember how they play each game. But it is not always what the observers (coaches, fans, etc.) remember.
A kid was playing in a small semi-pro league somewhere in the Midwest. He wasn't having his best game. He had gone 0 for 4 with a walk. He struck out a twice and he had booted a ball at third base that cost his team a run. In his eyes he was having a terrible game. However, the one thing that everyone watching the game had seen was his hustle. They observed him sprinting to his position and back to the dugout. They noticed him sprinting to first base after being walked. They noticed how he did the little things that few players take pride in doing. Fans and coaches saw his love for the game. They knew what type of player and person he was, just by seeing him hustle. His respect for the game gained others respect for him. Coaches and fans notice this type of effort. Hustle makes an average player stand out. Just running the bases can say a lot about a player. More often than not, the more aggressive, hustling teams will dominate teams that don't work hard. It is amazing how much better a team looks when they sprint on and off of the field. A team that hustles shows a positive attitude - that they want to be out there playing - that they're having fun at what they're doing.
Hustle shows a coach that you want to play. It says that you take pride in playing the game the right way. Hustle makes you better. Its the name of the game! Work hard at everything you do in baseball, because hard work and a positive attitude can take you a long way. Have fun, too.
Remember, hustle is the ONLY thing that a player at ANY level, can ALWAYS do right.
