What a game the girls had last night! With no subs the team once again stepped it up and played an awesome game. Our first goal was scored by Paulina H. off a ‘header’ from Giuliana P. Our defense consisting of Kayleigh G., Meghan S., Chrissy A., Sarah C., and Rebecca M. made some fantastic plays keeping the ball out of our end most of the game. There were a couple of shots on our net in the first half, which were saved by our awesome goalie Autumn W. Going into the second half the score was 1-0 to SSU. Woodbridge managed to get past our defence and score their first goal. It was obvious from the number of free kicks that the Woodbridge team was getting frustrated with our team’s grit and ball passing. Special mention to Leanne H., Giuliana P., Tara W., and Christina Z. for some great ball handling and shots on net. SSU came back and scored thanks to Paulina H. off a great pass by Sarah C. Again in the second half SSU dominated the game. With no substitutions, and intense efforts from the SSU girls, fatigue was starting to take its toll going into the final 10 minutes of the game and the Woodbridge team managed once again to get past our defence and score with an unfortunate bad bounce past our goalie Christina Z. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
LEAGUE GAME v's WEST ROUGE - June 9th, 2010
South Simcoe United (SSU) Under 16 Girls rep team overcame staggering odds during their 2nd CGSL league game of the year, against West Rouge (WR) at McLevin Community Park on June 9th. SSU and WR have played several times during an indoor winter league and preseason exhibition games, with WR always being victorious. However, it was quite a different story during their first game of the outdoor season... With only 10 players present, the SSU girls not only held their own against WR, who had a full complement of 18 players, but they beat them 1 -0. The SSU girls put on an incredible exhibition of teamwork, dedication, desire and effort that left the spectators in awe and the WR team in shock. The winning goal was scored by Leeann following a high speed break away up the wing, dribbling past a defender, then the goalie, to finish with a well placed ball in the net. It is rare when you get to see all the players on a squad firing on all cylinders and being on their best game, but this was one of those moments. Every single SSU player brought huge amounts of positivity and played their hearts out. They should all be considered MVP’s!
