SPYA Baseball Lightning Guidelines for Coaches
Attached is a document from the NCAA that clearly states the dangers of lightning and provides methods on how to respond to lightning once it has been detected near your baseball field. Please read and review this document with your staff (click the title for the NCAA Guideline Document). In short, the following is the guidelines for all SPYA Baseball Coaches to follow in the event that lightning is detected within the vicinity of your baseball field:
- Prior to game/practice, check forecast and radar before going to the game field to get the latest update of the weather and its location to your field of play.
- SPYA will strictly adhere to the Flash to Bang Method (point number 5 in document).
- Once 30 seconds Flash to Bang has been obtained, field should be cleared and everyone is in a safe structure.
- DUGOUT/PAVILON are NOT safe structures. For the majority of fields, the primary safe structure will be a vehicle.
- Once the game/practice has been stopped because of lightning, you may only take the field again for practice/game after 30 minutes have gone by without seeing any lightning within the vicinity of your field.
- The younger the age group, the quicker the decision should be made to clear the field since younger children will naturally take longer to gather their belongings and get to a safe structure (vehicle).
