SHAWNEE MISSION NORTHWEST COUGAR WRESTLING

11-30-2009

Wrestlers,

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

Make sure you pick up your shorts and t-shirt today or tomorrow.  Picture day is Wednesday at 4:00.  Everyone will need to wear their shorts and t-shirt Wednesday.  We don’t have extras, so don’t lose them.

We also have the unique opportunity for some of the JV Wrestlers to compete this weekend in the varsity tournament in Pleasant Hill.  I will keep you posted on who can go.  Freshman will be going to Aquinas unless they are on JV and have the chance to wrestle varsity.  If you are the 1st team JV wrestler and you are a freshman, then you can choose between the two.

Friday, the weigh-ins will be at Pleasant Hill HS, so we will need to leave school at the end of 6th hour.  Let your 7th hour teacher know and plan ahead.  There are very strict requirements for weighing in for Missouri schools.  You need to be about .3 under your actual weight class before we leave.

Saturday Morning, Freshman will weigh-in in the locker room at NW at 6:00am.  The bus will leave here at 6:30am to go to Aquinas.  It is a one-way bus, so have a ride lined up for the afternoon if someone is not coming to watch you compete.

Orange Cards come out this week.  I will pass them out on Tuesday.

From now on, we will work on just getting better.

Have a great day,

Coach Newcomb

Thoughts on team outlook:

This has been the most experienced team I have had here at NW.  We are returning seven State Qualifiers from last year’s team.  We have some pretty good depth at most weight classes, so I look forward to having the ability to move guys in and out as needed.  I like to think that we will be in the hunt for some tournament championships this year.  The Kids program here at Northwest is sending a few freshmen that will potentially make the varsity lineup, or at least push the ones that are here to get better if they want to stay in front of them.  I am very excited about the potential of this team.  The seniors have tremendous leadership and work ethic.  This combined with the numbers of them, should provide for an exciting practice room.  We have about 60 kids out for the team with 28 freshmen.  I look forward to getting Grant Berning back this year after a season ending injury last season.  I also look forward to seeing if Tyler Deal has lost any of his performance after taking a couple of seasons off.

Sunflower league predictions:

SM Northwest, Olathe North, SM East

Other interesting facts:

We have a brand new wrestling room thanks to the bond improvements.  I’m like a kid in a candy store, this is awesome.
