SJUMC would like to remind all participants, from the players, coaches, and parents, that they are representing the Church. This guide is being provided to ensure that all participants understand the goals of the SJUMC Youth Basketball Program.
Parents Code of Conduct
1. Support the Children: This means all the children. Be positive in your comments to all players. Acknowledge good plays by any player and let them know you recognize them. Most importantly do not celebrate a lopsided win or complain about a lopsided loss.
2. Support the Coach: Please remember that the coaches are all volunteers and are not professional coaches. Our coaches have volunteered their valuable personal time to ensure that our children are able to participate in a team sport. Do not be a sideline coach and yell instruction to players, it is up to the coach to provide instruction to our players. Be positive in your comments regarding the coaches and players. You will be amazed at how much the players can overhear. If there are any disagreements regarding the coach, you may contact the Boys or Girls Coordinators.
3. Support the Referees: Referees are human and make mistakes, but they are the authority on the basketball court. SJUMC wishes to teach our children to display good sportsmanship, respect authority, and above all, have fun. If you have a disagreement with how the referees handled the game, please let your coach know. Never approach a referee to dispute calls or the result of the game, that is the coach's duty. Keep in mind that the goal of our program is to teach our children to display good sportsmanship, respect authority, and have fun. If the parents support the referees, then the children will also.
Coaches Code of Conduct
In an effort to keep the sport of basketball in the proper perspective for everyone involved in the game, the Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church Basketball program has adopted the following Coaches Code of Conduct.
1. I will teach my players to play fairly and to respect the rules of the game of basketball.
2. I will demonstrate and instil in players a respect and courtesy toward opposing players, coaches, and officials.
3. I will show respect to my athletes at all times. I will encourage my athletes to have confidence in themselves and provide positive feedback in dealing with their mistakes or poor performance.
4. I will encourage the spectators (particularly parents) to display a conduct of respect and hospitality towards opponents and officials, and to recognize good play and sportsmanship.
5. I will respect the decisions of the officials.
6. I will have pride in being a good example of a coach - in appearance, conduct, language, and sportsmanship.
7. I will be reasonable when scheduling practices, remembering that young athletes have other interests and obligations.
8. I will encourage qualities of self-discipline, cooperation, communication, self-confidence, leadership, honesty, initiative, and fair play.
9. I will do my best to provide all of my athletes with a positive experience in the sport of basketball.
