STATEN ISLAND STINGRAYS: History
Febuary 10, 2001,ADVANCE STAFF REPORTStingray Holiday Tourney recap:
It took nearly two months to finish, but the Stingray Holiday Basketball Tournament is finally complete.
Team Marbury capped off an impressive tourney run with a win in the sixth grade division over the Stingrays in the loop's final title game.
Michael Neely, the league's vice president and director of coaches, was pleased with the cooperation he received from parents, coaches and officials.
"We had plenty of problems with rescheduling because of the bad weather, but St. John's University and the College of Staten Island were very cooperative in letting us use their gyms." said Neely.
Neely wanted to also thank Bob Clemente of the Italian Club, who sold over 60 raffles that benefited the Stingray program.
Angelo Greco ($2,500), John Gennusa ($1,500), Frank Greenwald and Dorothy Bartone (both won a pair of Knicks' tickets) were the top prize winners.

The S.I. Stingrays White captured the fifth-grade championship in the first S.I. Stingrays' Holiday Tournament yesterday at the College of Staten Island's Willowbrook gym with a 3-0 record.
White first tripped up the Immaculate Heart of Mary (N.J.) squad in the quarter-finals with a 37-36 overtime victory. Victor Schettino, Bob Humphrey, and Steve Tewfick combined for 25 points.
White then upended St. Joseph/St. Thomas 31-30 in the semifinals behind 12 points from Sal Altieri, Anthony Lista, and Joe Lombardo.
White clashed with the S.I. Stingrays Blue in the finals and emerged victorious 32-24. Schettino led the offense with nine points, while Mike Passaro sparked the defense.
The sixth grade Stingrays dropped a 46-41 decision to Team Marbury (Brooklyn) despite a combined 18 points from Ryan Rossiter and Matt Manley.
Fun at the Stingray Holiday Festival
Fun at the Stingray Holiday Festival
Although the snow has put a slight damper on the Stingray Basketball Organization's Holiday Festival, the first-year hoop program's initial tourney has been a big hit, according to the loop's vice president and director of coaches Michael Neely.
So far, two titles have been decided as the Bayshore Athletic Association captured the fourth grade championship and the Flemington Devils cruised to a 4-0 record in the seventh grade tilt.
Weather permitting, Neely hopes that titles in the fifth, sixth and eighth grades will be decided soon.
Neely also announced that the Stingrays sixth grade team (12-under) is having its final tryout on Jan. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's University, Grymes Hill. Call 698-7279 for further information or visit the league's website at www.eteamz.com/sistingrays.

Stingray holiday festival
The Stingrays Basketball Organization may still be in its early stages, but the hoop program has come a long way in just a short time. So far, the loop is preparing, and sponsoring, its first holiday tourney. The Stingray Holiday Festival will begin Wednesday and continue through next Saturday at the CYO Center, Port Richmond.
Twenty-two boys' teams from Staten Island, Manhattan, New Jersey and Long Island will compete in five separate divisions (fourth through eighth grades). Trophies will be given to first- and second-place finishers and most valuable players will be chosen. All teams will receive T-shirts and the Pocono Hoop Group will be awarding scholarships (one per division).
The Stingrays began play last year when its first team (sixth grade) competed in the Staten Island Lightning AAU Tournament.
"It just all snowballed from there," said Michael Neely, the Stingrays vice president and director of coaches. "We began the Stingrays with the thought of giving kids another option to play basketball and surprisingly we've had to turn back teams. We've come a long way in just a short time. It's really amazing."
With the success the boys' programs have had, Neely is planning on beginning a girls' loop in the future.
"The girls' program is still in its early stage, but it's something we're working on."

Subject: STINGRAYS 16U BOYS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS IN NEW ORLEANS JULY 10TH-17TH 2004
Just a quick note maybe you could point us in the right direction. Our AAU team has qualified for the National Tournament in New Orleans July 10-17.We are the only boys basketball team on Staten Island to qualify this season. Our team will be the #4 seed in NYC. We plan to represent Staten Island but the costs are huge.We are looking for a few Corporate Donations. We are a 5103c non-profit organization.
Do you think there is anyone at the would be interested in helping us out. Please read the article below and you will see that this team has boys from 4 High Schools both Public and Private. It would be great exposure for Staten Island Sports. The regionals held May 15th and 16th were amazing. The boys won 3 games on Saturday and 1 Sunday and advanced to the Semi-Finals May 31st at Island Garden in Long Island but win or lose the top 4 seeds advance.(see articles below)
This is from May 21 Staten Island Advance:
Stingrays gain AAU Nationals
Friday, May 21, 2004
The Staten Island Stingrays' 16-under Blue team, with players from four different Island high schools, became the first Stingrays' squad to qualify for the prestigious AAU National Tournament.
The Stingrays won four consecutive games at last week's Division II Regionals to move on to the semifinal round (May 31) in Long Island. Win or lose, the Stingrays earned an automatic berth in the tourney by advancing to the semifinals. The Nationals will take place in New Orleans from July 10-17.
Among the participants were Michael Neely, Justin Guilfoyle, Ricky Boccia, Claudio Perfetto, Rich Ferrara and Carl Pertigno from Monsignor Farrell; Thomas Tibbs and Brian Jirak from St. Peter's, Frank Terranova from St. Joseph by-the-Sea and Gleb Nepomnyashchy from Tottenville. The team is coached by Tottenville HS varsity coach Mike Reape and Mike Neely. Anyone interested in contributing to the program and helping alleviate the costs to New Orleans can contact Neely at (718) 948-7952.
We are going to take 10 players and 2 coaches to New Orleans for a week July 10th-17th-2004 as you know the
costs are high, The Stingrays will pay for the National Tournament($ 465.00) but some of the other costs we are trying to defer.
The AAU in conjunction with some hotels in New Orleans tries to keep the cost down somewhat. However between hotel, air fare and some meals
the Board of the Staten Island Stingrays thinks that coming up with $ 7,500.00-$10,000.00 would cut the cost dramatically that each family would have to pay.
The Stingrays are trying to do this by getting 3 or 4 donations of $ 2,500.00 or more. Anything the Atlas foundation could do for us would be greatly
appreciated. We could offer the Advance billing on our web-site and we thought that we would offer to put the logo or name of the Organization(s)
that donate monies to us on the Boys warm-up Jerseys
The Board of the Stingrays would like to take the time and thank you in advance for your concern with our Organization and we look forward to hearing from you
soon. If you would like to discuss this further I will give you my phone numbers and please feel free to call me anytime.
On a side note, the Stingrays have over 150 boys playing on 13 teams this season. We charge $ 280.00 per player. What I'm saying is that $280.00 doesn't go a long way when we are paying for 8 to 10 tournaments per team ,uniform, insurance and practice time(we rent public schools).
Thank You,
Mike Neely-V.P. Stingrays

ADVANCE STAFF WRITER
The Staten Island Stingrays' 16-and-under basketball team can add one more title to its list when the finals of the Nike League begin next week at Clove Lakes Park.
The team, which has won 16 of its last 19 AAU games, captured its second consecutive SportsFest High School League crown and finished third in the New York AAU Regionals.
Not bad for a program in just its fourth season.
The team, coached by Mike Reape and Mike Neely, includes Monsignor Farrell's Rick Boccia, Mike Larkin, Mike Neely Jr., Justin Guilfoyle, Carl Petrigno and Rich Ferrara, Tottenville's Gleb Nepomndaschy and Naz Kozar, St. Joseph by-the-Sea's Frank Terranova,Tom Tibbs and Brian Jirak of St. Peter's.
The Stingrays have also announced that tryouts for the 2005 season will begin in November for ages 10-13. Tryouts for ages 14-17 will take place after the 2005 high school season.
Qualified coaches interested in contributing to the new season can call Neely at (917) 667-8907 or visit the program's website at www.eteamz.com/sistingrays.
2005 Stingrays
Parents, Players and Fans,
The Directors of the Staten Island Stingrays would like to welcome you to our 5th season of Staten Island Stingrays Basketball. Over the last four years the Stingray organization has grown largely due to our parents, players and loyal fans. Our last season featured 13 teams all playing at least 25 games and we hope to make this season even better.
Each season we learn from our last, so as many of our returning families can attest to we try to make things better and more competitive for our kids. Although we have made some unpopular decisions overall we have moved the organization in a positive direction. We continue to try to make it the best sports organization on the Island.
This season, as was tradition in the past, we will see more changes as we try to put the best teams on the court as well as getting as many boys on competitive teams as we can. We realize this is difficult, but with your help, we know we can do it. Remember, its not only the best kids that make us competitive, but the right mix and character that separates us from the rest.
This season we will try to accommodate everyone while not weakening our teams. We will strive to have two teams in each of our age groups as long as we have quality coaches to guide our kids.
The Blue team in each age group will be players that dedicate themselves to playing BASKETBALL ONLY! They will play a full Travel/AAU schedule right through the spring of 2005 starting after the CYO season ends.
The Gold team in each age group will be made up of boys who want to play basketball but would also like to play other sports. Some have soccer, others baseball and in either case the schedules of these sports are in direct conflict with a part of the AAU travel schedule. For these teams we will do something unique; we will front load the schedule starting the week after CYO ends and play thru April(almost every weekend), then picking up the schedule late May and or early June with more tournaments and possibly a summer league.
BOTH TEAMS will play at least 25 to 30 games. This is being done to avoid our teams going to tournaments with 5 and 6 players as we have experienced too many times in the past.
Please be assured that these changes are not written in stone. It is just a concept to help the kids who like to play multiple sports while not hurting the teams that go to tournaments with a shortened bench which ultimately makes the team uncompetitive. If we find that we have enough basketball only players then both the Blue and Gold teams will be identical.
The Stingrays are also looking for Coaches in the 10, 11 and 12 year old age groups. Please keep this in mind: THE STATEN ISLAND STINGRAYS DO NOT PAY THEIR COACHES! They all volunteer their time. Any help you can give them or us would be appreciated.
Lastly we are always looking for Gym Time for our teams to practice or play some scrimmage games. If anyone has contacts with any gyms please call us (917-667-8907) or tell us at the tryouts.
Lets all work together to make the 2005 Stingrays Season a success!
