WHO ARE THE STINGRAYS ?
                                        STATEN ISLAND STINGRAYS

WHO ARE THE S.I.STINGRAYS?
THE STINGRAYS ARE A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION STARTED TO PROVIDE THE YOUTH OF STATEN ISLAND AN EDUCATIONAL SPORTS EXPERIENCE AND TO BUILD THE BOYS SELF ESTEEM WHILE ALSO TEACHING THEM TO RESPECT THEMSELVES AS WELL AS OTHERS.

WHERE WILL THE S.I. STINGRAYS PLAY?
THE BOYS WILL USALLY PRACTICE ONCE A WEEK AT PS 8 OR ST. JOHNS UNIV (GRYMES HILL). OUR GAMES WILL BE PLAYED IN BROOKLYN, STATEN ISLAND AND NEW JERSEY, WITH AN OCCASIONAL TOURNAMENT IN QUEENS OR LONG ISLAND.
NOTE: AT THIS TIME WE PLAN TO PLAY OUR REGULAR SEASON GAMES AT THE NEW REXPLEX CENTER ON IKEA BLVD NEAR JERSEY GARDENS IN ELIZABETH N.J. EXIT 13A N.J. TURNPIKE

WILL THIS CONFLICT WITH CYO?
95 % OF THE TIME THE ANSWER IS NO.OUR SEASON IS SCHEDULED TO START THE FIRST WEEKEND IN SEPT. OUR LEAGUE GAMES LOOK LIKE THEY WILL BE PLAYED SUNDAY MORNINGS OVER AT THE REXPLEX CENTER. TORNAMENT GAMES ARE TOUGH TO KNOW THIS FAR IN ADVANCE. THE REXPLEX LEAGUE WILL WAIT UNTIL WE GET OUR CYO SCHEDULE AND TRY TO GO AROUND IT AS BEST AS THEY CAN.

HOW MANY TEAMS DO THE STINGRAYS HAVE?
WE HAVE 4 BOYS TEAMS THIS YEAR. A 4TH GRADE TEAM, 5TH GRADE, 7TH GRADE AND 8TH GRADE. ALL OUR TEAMS WILL BE AAU CERTIFIED.

WHAT DOES AAU CERTIFIED MEAN TO ME?
BEING AAU CERTIFIED ALLOWS US TO PUT OUR TEAMS IN ANY TOURNAMENTS AROUND IN THE TRI-STATE AREA. OUR BOYS DESERVE TO TRY AND COMPETE AGAINST THE BEST COMPETION WIN OR LOSE.

WHAT IS THE COST TO ME?
THE COST IS $ 125.00 PER CHILD FOR THE SEASON (SEPT2000 TO AUGUST 2001) THE PRICE INCLUDES PRACTICE TIME, UNIFORMS (THAT ARE YOURS TO KEEP) TOUNAMENTS, LEAGUES, REF FEE’S. SECOND CHILD $ 75.00
THIRD CHILD $ 50.00.

The Staten Island Stingray 13 and under team held a post season barbecue hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Rick Boccia at their beautiful SE Annadale home. The boys had a blast and individual awards were given out by Coaches Mike Neely and Bob Corcoran.

St.Patricks Day Shootout in Wall Township 3/15-16
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Dante Charles and Chris Giordano teamed for a dozen points as the Staten Island Stingrays 12-under squad edged the New Jersey Knights 41-38 in a St. Patrick's Day Tournament game.

Bob Humphrey scored 16 points to lift the Stingrays 13-and-under squad past the Central Jersey Hawks 60-41. Humphrey also teamed with Steven Rivera for 21 points in a 42-38 win over the Middletown Wildcats.

The Staten Island Stingrays 14-and-under team went 2-1 yesterday, including a 51-37 win over the Power Blazers as Joe Warcholak, Karron McKenzie and Mark McGhie combined for 32 points.

Ryan Hennessy and Tom Tibbs combined for 20 points as the Stingrays defeated the Jersey Shore Rockets 63-38 in 15-and-under play


15u Stingrays Win 2 out of 3 in New Brunswick
Jerry Payne Shootout

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Frank Terranova scored 20 points and Rick Boccia added 13 and Ryan Hennessey added 12 as the Staten Island Stingrays defeated St. Michael's of Jersey City 65-60 in the AAU Jerry Payne Shootout Tournament U-15 division.
The Stingrays then lost to the Raritan Eagles 65-58 . Mike Neely and Dean Mercuris played agressive defense to fuel a comeback that fell a little short.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Brian Jirak(13pts 11 Reb 7 Blocks) and Frank Terranova(14pts) combined for 27 points and Tommy Tibbs helped run the offense to lift the Staten Island Stingrays over the Jersey Shore Warriors 66-64 in Jerry Payne Tournament 15-and-under play. All 12 players got into the scoring for the Stingrays.

NEPTUNE, N.J.-- The Staten Island Stingrays 3/28-3/29
NEPTUNE, N.J. -- The Staten Island Stingrays 11-and-under squad posted a 39-34 AAU victory over the New Jersey Lightning as James Tiernan, Steve Galante and Vinny Rivera totaled 26.

NEPTUNE, N.J.-- The Staten Island Stingrays upended the Brick Township 41-25 in AAU 12-and-under action as Dante Charles, Nick Clark, and James Kenny combined for 21 markers.

In the second game, Tyler Stradford, Nick Aquino, and Chris Giordano split 28 points as the Stingrays edged the Monmouth Stampedes 39-34.

John Fischer's 15 markers gave the Staten Island Stingrays 11-year-olds a 39-26 win over Monmouth.

A.J. Hemingway and Dan Golat split 22 points as the Staten Island Stingrays downed the New Jersey Fundamentals 51-36 in a 14-under test.

In 15-under Dave Bauer Memorial play, Frank Terranova and Mike Neely teamed for 26 points as the Staten Island Stingrays netted a 45-30 over the L.I. Wildcats.Chris Valentine and Ryan Hennessey led the way as the Stingrays 15's beat the P.A. Renagads 63-37.


Stingrays do Well in JKMBA JAMFEST
MARLTON, N.J. -- The Staten Island Stingrays 13-and-unders finished in second place in the JKMBA Jam Fest, rebounding from a 68-62 triple overtime loss to the Warminster Renegades with three victories.

The Stingrays defeated the South Jersey Jazz 67-47, the JKMBA Jaguars B 54-47 and the JKMBA Jaguars A 43-38 behind the play of Ryan Clement, Bobby Humphrey and Stephen Rivera.

The 12-and-under Stingrays rebounded from a 37-33 loss to the Warminster Renegades with a 42-34 win over the Newman Jaguars as Tyler Stradford, Chris Giordano and Nick Clarke totaled 34.

The Stingrays' 11-and-under squad finished fourth with a 1-3 record.

Island Garden Tournament 14 and 15
WEST HEMPSTEAD, L.I. -- Shamel Pryce, Tyshawn Adam and Dale Tranto each netted 16 points as the Staten Island Stingrays defeated the Long Island Lightning 67-62 in Island Garden Tournament 14-and-under action.

The 15 Stingrays Beat L.I. Lightning 59-52 Michael Marchi scored 23 pts and Frank Terranova had 13 rebounds ,Tommy Tibbs had 10 assists . Dean Mercuris and Chris Valentine led a second half come-back teaming for 14 second half points. The Stingrays 15's lost earlier to the Springfield Rifles 65-60 in a game that was nip and tuck the whole way. Missed free throws cost the Stingrays at the end ,Frank Terranova and Ryan Hennessey led the way teaming for 23 points.Brian Jirak had 11 rebounds.

Stingrays 15's Win all 3 at Chase the game Tournament !
Michael Marchi averaged 12 pts per game as the 15u Stingrays won all 3 games in the Chase the Game tournament in Yonkers.

Saturday spurred on by the defense of Dean Mercuris (who's 3 steals helped brake open a tie game)and Rich Ferrara's Heads up play and the shooting of Marchi and Ryan Hennessey ;the Stingrays beat the Westchester Hawks 46-36.

On Sunday the Stingrays defeated the Westchester Hawks 57-52 behind Frank Terranova (12pts) and Brian Jirak(10pts).Marchi also chipped in with 14pts.The Stingray defense came alive in the 2nd half as they held the Hawks to 18pts.

In the finale,the Stingrays came from 9pts down at the half to defeat the L.I.Lightning 60-48. Rick Boccia was the hero with 10pts including 4 for 4 free throw shooting late in the game. Once again it was the defense that turned the game around as Dean Mercuris had 4 steals to lead a 15-0 run to start the 2nd half.Mike Neely also excelled defensively as he Carl Petrigno,Chris Valentine and Frank Terranova combined to stop the inside game of the Lightning.Brian Jirak scored 9pts and had 10 rebounds and Tom Tibbs ,Chris Valentine and Boccia Combined for 30pts in the victory.

Stingrays 15's lose in Slamfest Championship Game 49-45
Stingrays 15's Outlast Jersey Shore Celtics 80-72

Torrid shooting from Ryan Hennessey(18pts 4-3pointers),12 points from Rick Boccia and fine inside play from Frank Terranova (21pts) led the Stingrays 15's to a 80-72 victory over the Jersey Shore Celtics. The Celtics hot shooting kept them in the game ,at one stretch hitting 12 shots in a row. But the 2nd half defense of Tom Tibbs and Dean Mercuris helped defend the outside game while Carl Petrigno,Frank Terranova and Brian Jirak controlled the inside.
Tom Tibbs 5 free throws in the last minute sealed the win.

Stingrays Hold on to beat J.S Rockets 83-78.

Tom Tibbs 20pts(10 for 10 free throw shooting in the 2nd half) led the Stingrays 15's to a 83-78 victory. Frank Terranova 16pts and Michael Marchi's Shooting(16pts) helped the team to victory.The defense of Mike Neely and Carl Petrigno put the team in position to win the game.

Stingrays Blowout the Monmouth County Warriors 78-49.

The Stingrays led by Michael Marchi's 24pts(6-3pointers) never trailed as Dean Mercuris (4 steals) and Brian Jirak (15 rebounds) controlled the defensive boards while Center Frank Terranova Scored 6 straight baskets in the first half to get the Stingrays of to a fast start.Rich Ferrara also scored 9 1st half points.

Stingrays lose to the Monmouth Power 49-45

Frank Terranova's 15 points were not enough as the Stingrays lost to the Host Power 49-45.Rick Boccia 7pts Brian Jirak 9pts helped the Stingrays stay close but could not overcome the cold all around shooting. Mike Neely and Rich Ferrara chipped in with 3pts each and Deam Mercuris(4points) came up with 3 steals but the boys fell a little short,but another great weekend.

The 15' have 12 wins and only 3 losses in the last 15 games!

Stingrays Memorial Weekend Tournament Schedule 11's and 17's

Best of the Best Eastern Regionals
The S.I. Stingrays 15's Split 4 games in the Best of the Best Eastern Regionals in Newark N.J this weekend:
   On Saturday,Frank Terranova 12pts,Brian Jirak 9pts led the Stingrays to a 50-36 win over the NJ Fundamentals. Rick Boccia 8pts, Rich Ferrara 5pts and the Defense of Carl Petrigno and Chris Valentine(also had 6pts) helped in the win.
The Stingrays then lost a tough game 57-52 to the South Jersey Mainstream. Tom Tibbs who played all forty minutes ran the show and hit 2 free throws with 40 sec left to pull the Stingrays to within 1 but a 3 pointer buy Mainstream iced the win. Mike Marchi 8 first half points helped keep the game close.Brian Jirak 6pts/12 Rebounds and Frank Terranova also chipped in with 10pts.
On Sunday,After a win over the Rockland Reign, the Stingrays lost in the Semi-Finals 49-40 to the Delaware Sharks.After trailing 38-24 with 8 minutes left the Stingrays went on a 12-0 run to cut the lead down to 2 led by Dean Mercuris 5 steals 8pts and a 3 pointer from Mike Neely.The Sharks then answered back with a 9-0 run to ice the game. Frank Terranova 12 pts Chris Valentine 6pts were the leaders for the Stingrays. Point guard Tom Tibbs played brilliantly breaking the Sharks full court pressure.The Stingrays next Tournament is June 14-15 In Cherry Hill, N.J.

FRANK TERRANOVA(STINGRAYS-15'S)REPRESENTING BRIGHT HORIZON REALTY WON THE MVP OF THE SPORTSFEST LEAGUE'S 9th and 10th GRADE ALL STAR GAME SCORING 21PTS AND 20 REBOUNDS AS THE EAST BEAT THE WEST 77-69.TOM TIBBS AND RYAN HENNESSEY ALSO REPRESENTED BRIGHT HORIZON REALTY IN THE GAME.

RICKY BOCCIA(STINGRAYS-15'S)ALSO REPRESENTING BRIGHT HORIZON REALTY WON THE 3 PT SHOOTING CONTEST AT SPORTSFEST LEAGUE'S 9th and 10th GRADE 3 PT SHOOTING CONTEST. AFTER THAT VICTORY RICKY WENT ON TO BEAT THE 11th and 12th GRADE WINNER. RICKY HAS WON THIS EVENT 2 YEARS IN A ROW.

The Stingrays 15's started strong and with the victory last night over Third World (42-40) the team has 2 wins and no losses in the Marbury League.
Tom Tibbs,Brian Jirak and Justin Guilfoyle each had 10pts and Frank Terranova had 4pts but blocked 5 shots including a game tying attempt with 30 seconds left to play.Mike Neely and Rich Ferrara played solid defense during a 10-2 run midway threw the second half.

Bright Horizons Wins Sportfest Championship ! ! !
Bright Horizons Realty won the Sportsfest 9th and 10th grade Championship (2-games to none) 56-53.Playoff MVP Frank Terranova scored 21 pts including 2-3pt plays with under a minute left to ensure the victory.Michael Marchi scored 13 and Tom Tibbs had 10 for the winners.

In game 1 of the series Brian (RAK) Jirak Scored 10 including 2 baskets with 1 minute left and Rick Boccia Chipped in with 16 to lead Bright Horizon Realty 51-46. Tom Tibbs ran the point and scored 10 in the victory.

The "help" defense of Mike Neely(4 charges in both games) and Rich Ferrara(2 steals-gm-2) helped keep the high powered offense of the CSA Prep Stars at bay.
Carl Petrigno(7 rebounds-gm-2) and Chris Valentine(3 Steals) both did a great job defending CSA's big men.

Bright Horizon Realty lost the first game of the season then went undefeated (13-0)the rest of the season!
