Katie Allen scored 10 of her team-high 24 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers, as Highlands went on to defeat visiting Scott 71-59.

Allen finished the game with eight rebounds and went 4-for-6 from the 3-point line, and Bekah Towles chipped in with 13 points as Highlands improved to 4-0.

The Bluebirds finished the game shooting 9-for-19 on 3-pointers.

Lauren Tibbs led Scott, which fell to 1-2, with 31 points and 14 rebounds.

The Scott girls' basketball team is trying to build an effective inside/outside scoring combination with its two best offensive players, senior guard Shelbi Benzinger and 6-foot-3 sophomore center Lauren Tibbs.

Cooper is trying to build a team in its first year of existence under head coach Shannon Turner.

Each squad on Thursday took another step toward the next level in its respective building process, as Scott coasted to its second win of the season, a 73-34 home victory against the Jaguars, who are still looking for the program's maiden victory after six games.

"We're getting there," Turner said. "Each day we get a little closer. I tell the girls not to look at the scoreboard, but to improve every game."

Scott coach Rhonda Klette delivers a similar message to her Eagles, but she encourages her girls to pay attention to the score.

"We've played very well when Shelbi and Lauren work together in the inside-outside attack. And they are really improving with that every day, along with all the other girls, who we depend on to help out as much as possible," Klette said.

"We went up on them pretty fast tonight, so there was a lot we got to work on, and I thought we did pretty well."

Scott (2-2) sprinted to a 32-10 first-quarter lead with the help of a 13-0 scoring run during which Benzinger drilled two of her four 3-pointers in the quarter.

Benzinger scored 14 first-quarter points and totaled 22 by halftime on the way to a career-high 29. She nailed five 3-pointers in the contest.

Tibbs finished with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, six on the offensive end, four of which resulted in putback baskets.

The Eagles led 52-17 at halftime.

"Coach says we have to go inside-outside as much as we can, so I'm penetrating and dishing, and shooting, and we're trying to rotate people at the top to create openings," said Benzinger, who is being switched from point guard to shooting guard this season to spur her scoring production.

"I think we're looking pretty good," Tibbs said. "We still have some rough spots. But our goal is to win the (37th) district and get to region, so we're going to be working as hard as we can to get better."

Scott last won a district championship in 2004. The Eagles have never won a girls' basketball regional title.

But Klette is confident that Benzinger and Tibbs working in concert with role players is going to pay some big dividends down the road.

"We lost in the first round of the district last year and that was a disappointment. But we gained experience," the coach said. "Shelbi is one of three seniors who are learning to lead. Lauren, one day, is going to be the best post player in the region. We're trying to put them on the same side of the floor so defenses can't cheat as much."

Senior Bethany Pelle, Scott's new point guard, finished with a 3-pointer and four assists. Senior forward Emily Davis added seven points.

Katlyn Sams, who has five years of AAU basketball experience but none at the high school varsity level, hit three 3-pointers and led Cooper with 13 points. Kendall Sebald added 10 points for the Jaguars (0-6).

"We're improving moving the ball around. But we didn't make one free throw, and we only shot two," Turner said.

"And we really need to improve our help defense. We fall asleep on the back side of the zone and lose people on the weak side. It takes small steps, and we're making them. And we'll keep building on them."

Tuesday night's victory was not the prettiest among the 500-plus wins in Boone County coach Nell Fookes' career. In fact, the game was downright ugly at times.

Junior Heather Sandlin scored a career-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers, lifting Boone County, ranked No. 4 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, to a 58-49 victory over No. 9 Scott.

"We really got sparked by Sandlin and our guard play defensively," Fookes said. "I think we wore them down some. Our kids don't understand the expectations of them yet. We have to play more consistently."

Joscelyn Davis scored 11 points, and Lauren Bowling added 10 for the Rebels.

Scott, tied with St. Henry for ninth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky poll, was led by sophomore Lauren Tibbs, who scored all 19 of her points in the second half.

Senior Shelbi Benzinger had 13 points and Emily Davis added 12 for the Eagles.

Bradley, one of just two senior starters for Boone County, entered Tuesday's game averaging 14.5 points per game and having scored in double figures 10 times.

She scored just five points in the first half, but she finished the game with nine assists.

"We need her to score in double figures every game," Fookes said. "She'd really rather pass the ball and do those things. She does a great job of that, but she has to score for us."

Boone County's shooting was ice-cold early in Tuesday's game. Bradley missed her first two shots as the Rebels began 1-for-6.

While Boone County was trying to find its shot, Bethany Pelle scored to put Scott ahead 8-7.

Neither team scored in the first 3:35 of the second quarter. Sandlin ended the stalemate with a 3-pointer putting the Rebels ahead 10-8.

Shortly after Bradley was assessed a technical foul for arguing a non-foul call, Boone County caught fire. Bowling and Bradley each hit 3-pointers sparking a 10-0 run to put the Rebels ahead 20-11.

Benzinger kept the Eagles close with two 3-pointers late in the half. But Davis' jump shot put the Rebels ahead 24-17, and Boone County took the lead into halftime despite shooting just 26.5 percent.

Cortney Sellers' 3-pointer off a pass from Bradley made the score 29-21 early in the third quarter.

"We rely on (Bradley) a lot to score," said Sandlin. "She really couldn't find her shot tonight. But toward the end of the game she helped out by setting us up for a lot of shots."

Sandlin hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Boone County its largest lead, 35-21.

Tibbs, a 6-foot-2 center, scored 15 consecutive points in an attempt to rally Scott down the stretch. But the Eagles could get no closer than six points.

Boone County forced 20 turnovers and recorded 16 assists.

Senior Paige Bowling hit a jumper in the lane with 45 seconds to play to put Campbell County ahead and later hit a free throw to secure the lead for the Camels as they defeated Scott 57-53 in a girls' basketball game Tuesday.

Dixie Heights 63, Scott 62: Senior guard Brooke Schlarman had a game-high 23 points for Dixie Heights.

No. 9 Scott made a huge comeback in the final period, scoring 30 points. It wasn't enough.

Dixie Heights iced the game at the free throw line, hitting 17-21 in the final period.

Scott sophomore center Lauren Tibbs had 21 points for Scott, giving her 1,019 points for her career.

HEBRON - During Conner's run to the state tournament last year, Lady Cougars coach Kim Warfield rarely played more than six players.

"Now when our shooters aren't on, we can keep looking down our bench and hopefully find someone who is," Warfield said.

On Thursday, that someone was Payton Malone.

After spending most of the game on the bench, the junior guard knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the final minutes to help Conner pull away for a 55-46 victory over Scott.

The win raised Conner's record to 14-6. It is ranked No. 7 in The Enquirer coaches' poll and is 5-2 since losing junior point guard Devin Beasley to shoulder surgery.

Those victories haven't come easily. Four of the five wins without Beasley have been by single digits.

"We're missing (Beasley) terribly on defense," Warfield said. "We are still trying to find our team chemistry (without her)."

The Lady Cougars eventually discovered some of that illusive chemistry, but not before Scott jumped out to a double-digit lead in the second quarter.

The Lady Eagles still led 44-41 midway through the final quarter. That's when Malone began her long-distance heroics - knocking down a 3-pointer to tie the game with 3:10 left to play.

Another Malone 3-pointer pushed Conner ahead 49-46 with just under two minutes left on the clock.

"We had a revolving door (on our bench) tonight to try to find someone to hit some (3-pointers)," Warfield said. "For (Malone) to step on the court after being on the bench most of the night and not be afraid to take (big shots), that was huge."

Guards Allison Long and Ellory Kring followed Malone's clutch shooting by knocking down six of seven free throws late in the game.

Long finished with a team-high 21 points. Kring - the new starting point guard - chipped in 14.

The Eagles (5-13) have now dropped six of their last seven games. That skid hasn't stopped sophomore Lauren Tibbs from continuing to compile monster numbers. The 6-foot-4 center equaled her season average with 26 points and added 13 rebounds.

With Tibbs leading the way, Scott scored 17 of its first 20 points in the paint to take a 13-point lead early in the second period.

The Lady Cougars fought their way back by ending the half with a 16-2 run.

"I keep telling the kids that we can't keep coming out without any intensity," Warfield said. "(Our players) wait until it's almost too late and then they pick it up. Then they decide, 'Now we'll fight.' That almost cost us tonight."
