2000 State Meet
2000 State Meet
The 2000 Track & Field State Meet was the most exciting and productive in SHC history. As Shannon, Tony and the coaches boarded the plane there was a real sense of nervous excitement as both Shannon and Tony were considered major factors in the battle to win a State Championship. The 5th place medal by Shannon in the 800 and the 6th place medal by Tony in the Discus, not only capped great seasons for these two individually but were, to this coach's knowledge, the first medals won by SHC athletes at the California State Meet.

SHC Varsity Boys Get WCAL Win Over Mitty
WCAL-Mitty win album ('02)
"This is why you work hard at practice. This is why I demand so much of you. But doesn't it feel good NOW?!" Those were the words exclaimed by 4th year SHC head track & field coach Andy Chan to his team after the Varsity Boys had beaten Archbishop Mitty, 71-65 on Wednesday afternoon. This marked SHC's first WCAL Varsity Boys dual meet victory, not just in Chan's 4 years at SHC but since at least 1994. It was expected to be a close meet and it lived up to expectations with no team ever taking a big lead over the other. The lead changed hands several times during the meet. "We lined up to give us the best possible chance to win the meet," said Chan, "We really considered all options and pulled out all the stops." Freshman Brian Conway was moved to Varsity at the last minute to try to score a point in the 1600. Misha Osipov was asked to run the 400 and 800 all within 15 minutes of each other. Joe DeFillipo pulled out of his usual long jump event to try to pick up points in the High Jump. "We knew it was going to be close. We needed everyone to give that little extra today to try to get the win," said Coach Greg Bianchi. Mitty got off to an early lead 5-0 when they won the 4X100 Relay, 45.00-46.89. The 5 point margin would be the Irish's biggest deficit of the meet. Don Sebastian struck back quickly winning the 1600 in 4:47.17 for SHC's first points. A sweep of the High Jump by Matt Gonzalez, DeFillipo and Christian Panganiban gave SHC their first lead, 14-9. The 110 Hurdles was a close race with Mitty's Mike Boulton edging out Andy Lee and Nick Lien for 1st. However a big 2 foot 3 inch PR from Michael Lim that gave him 3rd along with Nicolas Solis' 44-10 ½ for 1st in the Shot Put put SHC ahead 24-17, their biggest lead of the meet. It was short lived, however, as Mitty swept the Pole Vault to re-take the lead 26-24. Next up was the 400, which SHC would run without their usual 400 star, Peter Fleming. "We needed Peter in the 100 and 200. He can't run everything. So guys like Matt and Misha needed to step up," said Chan. And that they did. Osipov took 2nd in 53.55 with Gonzalez 3rd in 55.34. Minutes later, when Fleming won the 100 in 11.48, the line-up decision to have Fleming skip the 400 looked great. A 1-2 finish in the Long Jump by Ricky Cacho and Julius Santos put SHC ahead 41-36. Then a 1-2 finish by Mitty in the 800 put the Monarchs back ahead 44-42. In the Discus the Irish had a 1-2-3 sweep (Darren Zapanta, Solis and Lim) for 9 big points to take a 51-44 lead. The Irish would not trail again. "The middle of the meet was key," said Chan, "Manuel Splain got us an important 3rd in the 800 and then with Mitty in 3rd in the Discus, Michael Lim stepped up and threw his 2nd big PR of the meet to get us the sweep." After Lee and Lien again took 2nd and 3rd behind Boulton (this time in the 300 Hurdles) and Fleming won his 2nd sprint event of the day, the 200, the score stood at 60-53 for the Irish. "It was getting close to the end of the meet. We needed 9 points somehow. I figured it would come down to the 4X4," explained Chan, "Andy Lee was a little upset after not winning the 300 Hurdles and Misha was tired after the 400 and 800. I told Andy he had to put his frustration of the hurdles in a box and leave it because I needed him focused for the 4X4. Then we pulled Misha out of the 200 to save him for the 4X4." Sensing a close meet, Mitty decided to run their top distance runner Drew Olson in the 3200. Olson was hoping to sit out the meet and rest for the CCS Top 8 Meet on Friday night. "The Mitty coaches were trying to figure out if Don was racing the 32. Their coach even thought I was the SHC 2 miler for awhile," said SHC Coach Brian Mulry, "Don has a race Friday night, too, but we never considered holding him out. That says a lot about Don and his commitment to the team." As the 3200 began SHC felt they had 2nd and 3rd place in the Triple Jump so a win by Sebastian could clinch the meet. However as is the case in track, things change quickly. Mitty's Joe Okafor showed up at the Triple Jump pit and had a winning jump of 39-7 ½, which bumped SHC down to 3rd place and made the score a 61-61 tie. That 4 point swing meant it was imperative that Sebastian place no worse than 2nd in the 3200. Then after one lap, Olson dropped out of the 3200. The 3200 continued at a slow tactical pace causing Sebastian to lose track of the laps. Finally with a lap to go he and a Mitty runner pulled away and with a furious final 100 meter kick, Sebastian came from behind to win the 3200. The score was 66-65 SHC. It was a familiar story for SHC…it would all come down to the 4X4. Running the 4X4 for SHC would be Lee (3rd year junior), Osipov (3rd year junior), Gonzalez (3rd year junior) and Fleming (4th year senior). Between them - 13 seasons of SHC track & field and 0 WCAL varsity wins. "The guys looked nervous before the race….but so was I," said Chan, "I told them that this was fun and that this was what made the sport so exciting. I was reminding myself as much as them." Lee, leading off against his hurdle nemesis, Boulton, pulled away in the final 200 meters to give SHC a slight lead. Osipov would extend it slightly and Gonzalez kept it the same. Fleming would take the baton with a 3 second lead. "I was going crazy inside," said Chan, "For the last year I've been saying I want to win a WCAL Meet and I thought the Mitty meet was our best chance. And here we were maybe 50 seconds from doing it." Fleming would cross the finish line after a 51.4 split and SHC had their win. Chan ran over to congratulate his senior and announce the baton they were using, "The Black Beast" would now be retired on a winning note. "I'm very proud of the guys and I am happy for them. 4 years ago we had 8 guys total on the Varsity Boys team. Today 23 guys competed at varsity and 14 scored at least one point for us. We've come a long way. There's still a long ways to go but this team will always be remembered for helping to get us pointed in the right direction." SHC's scorers: Don Sebastian (1st in 1600, 1st in 3200) Matt Gonzalez (1st tie in HJ, 3rd in 400, 4X4 team) Joe DeFillipo (1st tie in HJ) Christian Panganiban (3rd in HJ) Andy Lee (2nd in 110H, 2nd in 300H, 4X4 team) Nick Lien (3rd in 110H, 3rd in 300H) Nicolas Solis (1st in SP, 2nd in DT) Michael Lim (3rd in SP, 3rd in DT) Misha Osipov (2nd in 400, 4X4 team) Peter Fleming (1st in 100, 1st in 200, 4X4 team) Ricky Cacho (1st in LJ, 3rd in TJ) Julius Santos (2nd in LJ) Manuel Splain (3rd in 800) Darren Zapanta (1st in DT) SHC RESULTS VARSITY BOYS 4X1 Relay / 0-5 Nick Lien Peter Fleming Andy Lee Joe DeFillipo (2nd) 46.89 1600 / 5-4; 5-9 1. Spiderman runs the 400 leading the way at WCAL Finals
Peter is Spiderman.WCAL02
On May 3... Spiderman will take you... For the ultimate spin.... That's what the the billboards around town were saying...but to the SHC Track & Field Community, May 3 meant more than just the opening of the Spiderman movie. May 3 was WCAL Finals at St Francis... Where Peter Fleming... Would go for the sub-50 in the 400... But to start the meet, Nick Lien and Andy Lee competed in the 110 Hurdles. Lien would place 6th in 16.19, while Lee hit a hurdle, lost his timing and had to drop out. Matt Gonzalez, a little off in the High Jump because of lack of training in that event, no heighted at 5-8 (opening height). In the much anticipated 400 meter race, Julius Santos PR'ed in the non-scoring heat at 56.65. Then it was time for the man we call Spiderman to take the stage. Running against strong competition from Chris Boykin and Nick Johnson of Bellarmine, Angelo Fobbs-Valentino of Serra, and Simon Lim of St Ignatius, Fleming would run a PR 50.12 for 3rd place (CCS qualifying). In the 800, Misha Osipov, arguably the most improved middle distance runner in the league placed 8th in 2:01.52. Last year at this same meet, Osipov was 3rd in the F/S race at 2:12. Last year before league finals, Osipov's PR was around 2:16....meaning that in the last 1 year and 1 week, he has knocked 15 seconds off his 800 time. In the 300H, Lien ran a PR 44.78 in the non-scoring race and then Lee placed 4th in 40.58. That time has a chance to advance to CCS as an at-large qualifier. In the 200, Joe DeFillipo placed 11th after a 24.81 in the non-scoring race. Then Fleming followed up his 400 effort with a 5th place showing in the 200 (23.18). In the 3200, Don Sebastian, perhaps running his last SHC race scored a point for the Irish with a 6th place 10:11 - beating "The Troll" from Bellarmine for the first time. Also in the 32, Manuel Splain showed determination in running a 29 sec PR for 17th (11:15). Then came the real excitement. In the Varsity 4X400, Bellarmine, Serra and SI were the favorites, all having run under 3:30 this season. SHC, Mitty, Riordan and St Francis were all expected to battle it out having run between 3:30-3:34. The atmosphere was terrific as fans and team members gathered on the field to cheer on the teams. Everyone's lead off leg seemed to run fast as Lee brought it in in last place after a fast 53.8. Osipov then did what he has done all season, close ground. In the last 200 he moved SHC close to the 4th-5th-6th battle. Osipov's split: PR 52.8!! Gonzalez was next for the Irish as the race became very physical with lots of bumping on the back stretch. Gonzalez raced past 2 runners in the last 150 who were more concered with elbowing each other. Gonzalez's split: PR 52.9!! Fleming took the baton in a close battle for 4th, but he quickly pulled away into a clear 4th and closed ground on the leaders. When the dust cleared, not only did SHC place 4th in a season best (5 sec PR) 3:29.10, but Spiderman had his sub-50....49.6!! For the F/S Boys, it was a small distance contigent that competed. Brian Conway was 11th in the 1600 at 5:01.79 (just missing his goal of sub-5) and doubled back for a 2:22 800. Gino Giusti and Jacob Wertz both ran strong races in the 3200. And Alex Apalit tied for 8th in the High Jump at 5-0 1/4. SHC RESULTS 110H 6. Nick Lien 16.19 Andy Lee DNF 400 3. Peter Fleming 50.12 14. Julius Santos 56.65 800 8. Misha Osipov 2:01.52 300H 4. GIRLS STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Rowbury first in 1,600; Hardeman wins 400 gold
By Dennis Knight

NORWALK - Behind every great athlete is a supporting cast of coaches, family and friends.

On Saturday at Cerritos College, Sacred Heart Cathedral's Shannon Rowbury and Wilcox's Christina Hardeman had their entire entourages in tow for the most important and final competition of their high school careers -- the 84th annual CIF state track and field championships.

Their supporters weren't disappointed, as Rowbury took home a gold medal in the 1,600 meters and Hardeman ran a personal record of 54.09 seconds to win the 400. She came back an hour later to medal with a sixth-place finish in the 200 dash.

Rowbury, the defending state 800 champion, shifted her focus to the 1,600 after the Central Coast Section championships. Rowbury rose to the occasion in a race that started at a slow pace, with a first lap of about 75 seconds. Two runners tangled legs and went down next to Rowbury as the third lap started, but she avoided the collision and moved to the front.

As the bell lap sounded, Rowbury was running with Maria Carillo's Jenny Aldridge. Rowbury made her move on the back stretch and clocked a 65-second lap to beat Aldridge by more than three seconds at 4:52.77.

"The pace went out slow. I just wanted to be in position to give it everything I had on the last lap," said Rowbury, who received the CIF Sportsmanship Award.

Rowbury, who will run at Duke next year, credited her coach, Andy Chan, for dedicating himself to her development: "He says he's not emotional, but it's kind of cute seeing a grown man get sappy. He gave me a card and made a CD for me this week."

Chan was sentimental after the race.

"This was about seeing her run in the SHC uniform one last time, and she ran the game plan perfectly," he said. "The card I gave her said this is the end of our coach/athlete relationship and the beginning of a lifelong friendship."

Another title for SHC girl
By Mitch Stephens

Norwalk (Los Angeles County) -- With one lap to go, Sacred Heart Cathedral High of San Francisco senior Shannon Rowbury was right where she wanted to be. But then so was her main competition, senior Jenny Aldridge of Maria Carrillo High in Santa Rosa.

The two state champions strode together side by side for 150 meters before Rowbury gave one last push. "I thought, 'This is it, I might as well go for it,' " Rowbury said.

She left Aldridge virtually standing still, taking a 15-meter lead down the stretch and winning the 1,600 title going away at the California state high school track and field championships at Cerritos College on Saturday.

Rowbury's time was a rather slow 4 minutes, 52.77 seconds. Aldridge, who plans to attend Arizona State, was second in 4:55.94.

It was the second straight title for the Duke-bound Rowbury, who won the 800 last year. She became the second girl in state history to win both events. The other was Kathy Costello of Pleasant Hill, both in 1975.

Sacred Heart coach Andy Chan stood motionless when informed of Rowbury's historic feat.

"I stopped being amazed at anything Shannon does after her freshman year," Chan said. "You almost just come to expect it."

Rowbury was the only defending champ in the bunch, and her experience showed in the 1,600 as she remained in the pack during a sluggish first lap of 78 seconds. When the pace picked up, Rowbury avoided
disaster for the second straight year. Feet got tangled and Liza Pasciuto of Murrieta Valley and Sarah West of Davis went down in a heap. Rowbury quickly scooted to the outside and came through unscathed. (Last year in the 800 finals, two girls dropped and Rowbury had to hurdle over them en route to victory.)

"I saw the girls falling and just tried to get out of there," Rowbury said. "I was just lucky. That's so terrible. It could have easily been me to go down. That's scary."

Aldridge, the state 1,600 champ as a sophomore who had the state's top time coming in, took the lead down the backstretch of lap three and Rowbury pulled along her outside with 400 meters to go. "She adjusted beautifully throughout the race," Chan said. "That's pretty much just how we played it out. Two state champions going at it with a lap to go. From there it all comes down to heart."

Said Rowbury, comparing the two titles: "This was a lot more fun. Last year I felt so much pressure. This was the race I chose and I had no regrets."

State.02 trials 1600
It was a media blitz at State Meet. Here is what the SJ Mercury News and SF Chronicle had to say about the Fri State Meet Trials.

SJ Mercury – State Trials: http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/2002/06/01/sports/3380035.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp

Another Central Coast Section runner awaiting today's race is Sacred Heart Cathedral's Shannon Rowbury, who cruised to a third-place finish in her 1,600 heat to qualify for today's final.

"I got boxed in there for a while and had to fight to get out of that position," said the senior, who won the state 800 last year but dropped it in favor of the 1,600 for this meet. "I'll be a little nervous tonight, but that shows that this race means a lot to me. Tomorrow I'll try to relax and maybe see a movie, something to keep my mind off the race."

Coach Andy Chan was pleased with his runner's performance. "She did exactly what she needed to do," Chan said. "Our theme is to live to run again tomorrow. There is a real art to it. You have to run fast enough to get to Saturday and save enough energy for the big race, the one we're all hoping to remember for a long time."

Big showdown in girls 1,600

Norwalk, Los Angeles County -- Sacred Heart Cathedral senior Shannon Rowbury was about to project today's winning 1,600-meter time when Irish coach Andy Chan intercepted with a hand over her mouth.

No free strategy here. The state championship will be a battle of wills and minds.

Rowbury will take on Jenny Aldridge, a senior at Maria Carrillo of Santa Rosa, in a battle of champions today at 4 p.m.

The two played a little cat-and-mouse during Friday's trials at Cerritos College with Aldridge winning the first heat in 4 minutes, 58.77 seconds just ahead of Rowbury (4:58.89).

"We were kind of spying each other out the whole race," Aldridge said. "It should be a lot like that (today) but a whole lot faster."

Said Chan: "Shannon is just where she wants to be. She ran fast enough to qualify but didn't seem to expend too much energy."

Aldridge won the state 1,600 as a sophomore while Rowbury captured the 800 last year. Even after posting the nation's second-best 800 last week in the Central Coast Section finals, Rowbury put all her legs in the 1,600 after she ran the state's then-fastest time (4:51.0) in her league finals. That caught the attention of Aldridge, who had the previous best time.

"I thought it was very interesting," the Arizona State-bound Aldridge said. "I wanted to make a statement of my own."

She did that by taking back the lead with a winning 4:50.18 time in the North Coast Section finals. Aldridge believes the race will come down to the final lap between her and Rowbury. The winning time should be in the 4:45- range, Aldridge said. Murrieta Valley sophomore Liza Pasciuto and College Park of Pleasant Hill sophomore Lindsay Allen also should be in contention.

"(Rowbury) is the only girl who has the same closing speed as me," she said.

"We both went 68 seconds on our final lap (on their lifetime bests). No matter what, it will be very interesting."

SHC 4X400's - Through The Years (1999-2002)
The 4X400 Relay. It's provided quite a few exciting moments for the Fightin' Irish over the years. In 1999, the Serra Invitational came down to the last race. The SHC Varsity Girls were tied with Hillsdale HS coming into the 4X4. Whichever team did better in this final event would win the team championship. Hillsdale won heat 1 in 4:20. Seeing that SHC's best time of the season up to that point was 4:22.1, things looked grim. But the team of Gina Collignon, Carmen Bullard, Toni Russell and Shannon Rowbury raced to a 4:17.69 giving the Irish the win.

Also in 1999, the SHC Varsity Boys made their last trip to the CCS Meet in the 4X4. At WCAL Finals, an injury to a St Francis athlete in the 200 opened the door for the Irish to get 5th….and they did. The team of William Hu, Moe Arnaiz, Tommy Lee and Jon Jung qualified SHC on to CCS. At CCS, Jason Cacho replaced Arnaiz on the team so Arnaiz could focus on his specialty the long jump.

At the 2000 CCS Top 8 Meet, SHC broke the school record in the 4X4. The previous record was 4:10.6 set in 1993. The team of Russell, Collignon, freshman Jennifer Greene and Rowbury shattered the record, running 4:06.56 and placing 4th. That same team went on to win the GPSL title in the 4X4.

The 2001 SHC team lost Collignon (to graduation) and Russell (who skipped track season to prepare for her collegiate basketball career at USF) but gained a senior transfer from Ohio named Ahimsa Hodari, who just happened to be a junior national competitor in the heptathlon. The other new addition to the team was Santia Andrews. This team finally came together to run fast towards mid-season. A fast 4:10.34 at Mt Sac gave a preview of things to come. Aileen McAteer subbed in for Andrews at GPSL Finals as the Irish raced to a 4:07.51 and their 2nd straight 4X4 league title. They tied the school record at the CCS Sub-Sections. And then things got real fast. The coaches settled on Greene in the lead-off position and Andrews second. But Rowbury, who had always run anchor for SHC was moved to the 3rd leg so her superior speed would allow SHC to move up large amounts of ground mid-race. This left the anchor leg in the capable hands of a senior with a lot of heart in Hodari. The combination paid off with SHC's fastest two 4X4's ever, 4:02.98 at the Semi Finals and 4:03.89 at CCS Finals, which was good for 7th place. In all, this year's team ran faster than the 1993 school record time an amazing 5 times and ranked #6 in the CCS for the season.

In 2002, the dual meet against Notre Dame Belmont was close and it appeared that SHC would need to win the 4X4 to win the meet. With Rowbury already having run 4 events, it came down a very young squad to get the job done. Andrews, now a junior, was the veteran of the bunch. The rest of the team were freshmen, Danielle McCray, Rachel Giovannetti and Ashley Thrailkill. The foursome handled the pressure beautifully and never trailed, winning going away in 4:31.

Also in 2002, a veteran team of boys, would run the 4X4 for SHC. Andy Lee (3rd year junior), Misha Osipov (3rd year junior), Matt Gonzalez (3rd year junior) and Peter Fleming (4th year senior) would provide all kinds of excitement. Against Riordan on March 27, the meet came down to the 4X4. This time Riordan would get us but it was close and it took an amazing final leg from football/track star Eric Wright to do it. Then against Mitty on April 17, SHC was on the brink of history. Again it came down to the 4X4. Between the 4 members of the relay team were 13 seasons of SHC track & field and 0 WCAL varsity wins. "The guys looked nervous before the race….but so was I," remembers coach Andy Chan, "I told them that this was fun and that this was what made the sport so exciting. I was reminding myself as much as them." Lee, leading off against his hurdle nemesis, Mike Boulton, pulled away in the final 200 meters to give SHC a slight lead. Osipov would extend it slightly and Gonzalez kept it the same. Fleming would take the baton with a 3 second lead. "I was going crazy inside," recalls Chan, "For the last year I'd been saying I want to win a WCAL Meet and I thought the Mitty meet was our best chance. And here we were maybe 50 seconds from doing it." Fleming would cross the finish line after a 51.4 split and SHC had their win. Chan ran over to congratulate his senior and announce the baton they were using, "The Black Beast" would now be retired on a winning note. However, even without the Black Beast, this team had one more magical performance in them. At the WCAL Finals, Bellarmine, Serra and SI were the favorites, all having run under 3:30 during the season. SHC, Mitty, Riordan and St Francis were all expected to battle it out having run between 3:30-3:34. The atmosphere was terrific as fans and team members gathered on the field to cheer on the teams. Everyone's lead off leg seemed to run fast as Lee brought it in in last place even after a fast 53.8. Osipov then did what he has done all season, close ground. In the last 200 he moved SHC close to the 4th-5th-6th battle. Osipov's split: 52.8!! Gonzalez was next for the Irish as the race became very physical with lots of bumping on the back stretch. Gonzalez raced past 2 runners in the last 150 who were more concerned with elbowing each other. Gonzalez's split: PR 52.9!! Fleming took the baton in a close battle for 4th, but he quickly pulled away into a clear 4th and closed ground on the leaders. When the dust cleared, not only did SHC place 4th in a season best (5 sec PR) 3:29.10, but Peter "Spiderman" Fleming had his sub-50....49.6!! The 4th place finish was the team's highest WCAL Finish in years and just missed qualifying for CCS. The time ranked 14th in the CCS for the season.

SHC Sweeps all 4 Divisions at Valley Christian
WCAL Valley Christian Team Pic.03
The SHC Fightin' Irish Track & Field team closed out the WCAL Dual Meet season on Wednesday May 7th with a sweep of Valley Christian in all 4 divisions. "It was a great way to end the regular season," said SHC Head Coach Andy Chan, "We came in here hoping to sweep to give us some momentum heading into league finals." Because Valley Christian does not have a throwing facility, SHC already had an 18-0 lead as they got off the bus as Valley Christian was forced to forfeit the points to the Irish. However, a variety of circumstances would make this anything but an easy meet. SHC was already missing athletes due to the school choir dress rehearsal. Then two people missed the bus when their AP test went long. Once at Valley Christian no less than 6 athletes were unable to complete their scheduled events because of injury or illness. In the end, only 62 of the 86 people on the SHC roster competed. "This team is the most resilient team I've had here," said Chan, "They are all very versatile and flexible so we can make last minute substitutions and still compete well. They are also mentally strong so that when someone is out, someone else is ready to step it up in their place."

VARSITY GIRLS - After a 2nd place in the 4X100 Relay, Michelle Gallagher took 2nd in the 1600 behind state leader Amanda Thornberry in 5:03. The Irish then flexed their hurdle strength with Veronica Martinez and Jessica Lau going 1-2 in the 100H. In the 400, Santia Andrews and Danielle McCray took 2nd and 3rd. Next came a slew of points from Christina Young and Helena Silva. Young took 2nd in the 100 and won the Long Jump, while Silva took 2nd in the Long Jump. SHC was now out to a commanding 44-24 lead. Valley Christian closed the Irish lead to just 13 points after the 800, 300H and High Jump, 52-39. However, SHC's Andrews and Kiersten McKoy went 1-2 in the 200 and when Young and Silva scored 4 points by placing 2nd and 3rd in the Triple Jump, SHC had clinched the win. Gallagher and Melanie Scannell's 1-2 in the 3200 and convincing win in the 4X4 that included a 63 leg from Lau and a 61 leg from Andrews were the final points for the Irish.

VARSITY BOYS - Running un-opposed in the 4X100, SHC dropped the baton on the final exchange. However, when Misha Osipov and Manuel Splain went 1-2 in the 1600 and the Irish swept the 110H 1-2-3, the lost points in the 4X1 were quickly forgotten. SHC had jumped out to a 35-1 lead. But the bad news was Nick Lien tripped on the last hurdle in the 110H and was pretty badly scrapped up and out for the rest of the meet. That combined with Julius Santos feeling under the weather and Steven Perez having an injured leg, put the Irish down 3 key team members. That's when the team's depth started to show itself. Matt Gonzalez continued his strong running by winning the 400. Even more importantly sophomore Christian Santamaria justified his move up to Varsity by placing 3rd in the 400. Then Chris Kennedy took a 3rd in the 100, running for the injured Lien. In the 800, Osipov ran a dominating 2:03 for the win and again it was a F/S Boy moved up to Varsity to score some points that came through as Josh Ling took 2nd in 2:12. In the Long Jump, Odelle Edora stepped up in the absence of his buddy Santos to take 3rd. "We were grabbing all the 'little points' that sometimes get away with our strong depth," said SHC sprint coach Patrick Roehrdanz, "That allowed us to keep a pretty commanding lead and never allowed Valley Christian a chance to get back into the meet." By the time Andy Lee and Christian Bonifacio placed 1-2 in the 300H, with Lee running a WCAL-leading 40.0, SHC had clinched their first Varsity Boys dual meet win of the season. A 1-2-3 sweep in the Triple Jump, a 1-2 in the 3200 and a season-best 3:33 to win the 4X400 were the final points in a solid meet for the SHC Varsity Boys.

JV GIRLS - The JV Girls came into the meet with a 3-3 dual meet record, looking to finish the season above .500. SHC had the early lead thanks to the forfeited points but Valley Christian fought back. After the 100 meters, SHC trailed 29-30. "Even though we were down, I felt good about what we were doing," said Chan, "We scrapped for some points in the 400 and 100 using our distance runners and I felt our jumpers, distance runners and hurdlers were likely to score some big points for us later in the meet." Chan was right. Within minutes after falling behind 29-30, the Irish re-took the lead. First in the Long Jump Nicole Gonzalez, Juliet Olmos and Sun Nguyen went 1-2-3 for 9 points. Then Nina Martinez, Joanna Angeles and Jessica Rojo all ran PR's in sweeping the 800. Boom another 9 points for SHC. Finally a 1-3 finish in the 300H by Nina Pedersen and Elena Jimenez put SHC firmly ahead 53-33. Still worried about the outcome, Chan continued to move people around to maximize the points. Lena Dughman grabbed an important 3rd place in the 200. Then Nguyen, triple jumping for the first time, had a successful 25-0 jump to place 2nd. By the time SHC won the 4X400, they had outscored Valley Christian for a 68-49 win. After the meet, Chan recognized Bernadette Frias, who ran in 4 events, three of which she was not originally scheduled for but just volunteered to do when the team needed additional competitors.

F/S BOYS - The F/S Boys were looking for their first dual meet win since 2001 when they beat Mitty. After taking 2nd in the 4X100 Relay, Bryan Tolentino and Albert Cheng went 2-3 in the 1600. Then Adrian Bonifacio and Chris Blanco took the top 2 spots in the 65H and McJullian Aujero and Matt Szeto did the same in the 400. Suddenly SHC had a 38-11 lead. In the 100 meters, James Dees placed 2nd and in the Long Jump Javieree Pruitt and Alex Apalit were 1-2. "We've got some real strength on the F/S Boys team," said Chan, "We cover all the events pretty well. Everytime you look up it's someone different scoring points in an event." Tolentino and Jason Lee placed 2nd and 3rd in the 800. Then Pruitt and Apalit repeated their 1-2 performance in the High Jump. A 1-2-3 sweep in the 300H, led by Jimmy Szeto (making up for a DQ in the 65H with a PR 46.5 in the 300H), put SHC ahead 70-24 and guaranteed an SHC victory. Dees grabbed a 3rd in the 200 and Matt Szeto and Apalit triple jumped PR's of 38-10 and 38-5 to place 2nd and 3rd. Cheng placed 2nd in the 3200. In the 4X400, the SHC F/S Boys team found themselves in a tight battle…with Valley Christian's Varsity squad. Aujero led off and it was pretty even. On the 2nd leg Bonifacio surged by the Valley Christian runner and Jimmy Szeto maintained the lead before handing off to his brother Matt Szeto. The elder Szeto brother held the lead as SHC put an exclamation point on the meet for SHC.

In the end, SHC could boast that they scored points in every event that was contested except the Varsity Girls High Jump. "I'm very proud of the team's effort today," said Chan as the team celebrated its successful meet, "We've been working so hard this season and it's very nice to see the smiles on everyone's face right now." 47 different SHC athletes scored points at the meet.

After the meet, Chan emphasized two things: 1. Recognition of the seniors in their final dual meet. 2. Reminder to the underclassmen that it feels very good to have success and with some hard work and dedication they can have this type of good feeling at the end of more meets next year.

Michelle places 4th at 2003 State Meet!!
Congratulations to Michelle Gallagher who capped her SHC running career with a 4th place finish in the 3200 meters at the CIF State Meet Sat night. Her time was 10:41.37. After placing 3rd at CCS last week, she turned the tables on rivals Ruth Graham (Gunn) and Melissa Grelli (Presentation), finishing as the top CCS runner at State Meet. Because Michelle had been sick with a virus every since WCAL Finals, it was difficult to tell how well Michelle would place. On paper, her best time ranked her #2. But her time of 11:01 from CCS Finals, where she was 3rd, only ranked her 15th. There was also the issue of how to train for this race. "Typically you taper runners the week of State Meet," said SHC Coach Andy Chan, "But I felt Michelle had missed so much training during her illness that it was important to stress her legs to get some sharpness back for State. It was an agressive approach to work her hard the week of State Meet but we both agreed to go for it." Michelle ran a vert smart race, running the first lap in a fast but controlled 76 seconds. She came through the first lap in 18th place out of 25. "Even though Michelle was quite a ways back place-wise after lap 1, I was not really concerned," said Chan, "She practiced 80 seconds laps all week long so I knew she knew the right pace." During the week leading up to State Meet, Michelle ran no less than 17 laps at 79-81 seconds during various interval practice sessions to hammer the pace into both her legs and her head. Michelle definitely showed she knew what she was doing as she gradually began passing other runners who went out too fast. She ran 80-81 seconds for laps 2-7. "Michelle looked very strong on lap 3 and I thought to myself, 'She's having a good day'" said Chan. After the first mile in 5:19, Michelle moved into medal contention by passing still more runners. "She passed a group of 2-3 runners on lap 5 at the same spot she made a defining move at Arcadia," said Chan, "At that point I was so happy because she was running the type of race she wanted to and I felt good that there was going to be medal in her near future." With 800 to go, Michelle was in a pack of runners battling for a top 6 finish. She continued to move up, and was in 4th with a lap to go. "Michelle was tired but she went with the Ukiah girl on the last lap and that helped insure a State Meet medal," said Chan. Clarie Rethmeier (San Pasqual), the State leader in the 3200 won the race in 10:27.32. Defending champion Rachel Bryan (Laguna Creek) was 2nd in 10:35.07, with Ukiah's Shelby Leland in 3rd (10:38.09). Close behind Michelle was Phylilis Blanchard (Rancho Cotate - 10:41.83) and Lindsay Flacks (Harvard Westlake - 10:45.32) for the last medal. "Everyone went out so fast," said Gallgher, "I just hung back and did my own thing. I heard Andy a couple of times during the race telling me to pass people and I just tried to do it." "I could not be prouder of Michelle. She showed a lot of courage and determination just to get to this point with the illness and all," said Chan, "But she never lost sight of her goal for this season. It was like 2 years of learning the sport all coming together in one big race. She paced it well, ran a smart race strategy was aggressive at the right time and left it all out there on the last lap. What better way to finish your high school career. When she transferred here as a sophomore she was already a great runner. But as a senior, she leaves here as a GREAT RACER."

Class of 2003
Thanks to all the seniors on the team. This year we graduate 16 team members plus special mention to Christian Panganiban, who would have been a 4-year team member if injuries from a car accident in the early season had not prevented him from competing. This really has been the class that has come and changed the most. There were 10 people on the team as freshman who are still involved with the program. Through the years the program has grown and changed. Coming to practice, working hard, striving to be the best team we can be and having fun have all become part of the norm.

CCS 2004
CCS Album.04
Jason Kobuchi and Christina Young capped their senior year at SHCP on May 22, 2004 with a big doubleheader....GRADUATION and CCS. Immediately after receiving their diplomas they walked out of the Cathedral and into the school van to head for San Jose for the meet.

In the 110 Hurdles, Jason placed 5th in his heat and 12th overall (out of 30) in 15.86. That time made him the fastest WCAL athlete on the day, just ahead of Moon's 15.89 for Riordan and Guttadauro's 15.90 for Mitty.

In the Triple Jump, Christina shook off early nervousness to jump 34-7 1/2 (2nd longest jump of her life). She placed 15th out of 29 and she too was the #1 placer in the WCAL for her event. CLICK on the above headline for complete results.

And go to: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2004/05/21/WBGG56NQOU1.DTL
to read a great article from the Friday Chronicle about SHCP's exploits at WCAL Finals. SI and Riordan are also mentioned but Christina is the headline and Jason and Clarissa get mentioned in the first section of the article!

Class of 2004
It’s that time of the year again to honor and thank the seniors. Wed marked their final WCAL Dual Meet. As is tradition we will honor the seniors with some brief introductions at practice on Thur. There are 14 seniors on the team this year.

4 YEAR SENIORS
Tristan Arcelona
Clarissa Barnes
Gino Giusti
Chris Kennedy
Jason Kobuchi
Justin Yip
This group has been through a lot on the SHCP Track & Field team. The girls were in the old Girls Private School League when they started. The uniforms have been upgraded from the old boys blue and girls white nylon singlets to the current green Irish tops. Over the years this group has traveled to Redding, Fresno and Mt Sac. When these guys were freshman, the SHCP F/S Boys got Coach Andy's first WCAL dual meet win, with a 81-51 decision over Mitty. That day set the stage for the Varsity win over Mitty in 2002 and the sweeps over Valley Christian in 2003 and 2004. The team was 58 strong back in 2001. This year we have 108 people on the team. Clarissa was the last GPSL champion, winning the Varsity SP as a sophomore. Jason and Justin trained in the hurdles as juniors even though they often did not get to compete in their specialties because we only had 3 entries in the hurdle events with no second heat and they were stuck behind then seniors Andy Lee, Nick Lien and Christian Bonifacio. Still, they did the work and have been rewarded with a senior year to really remember. Chris has improved his long jump PR in each of his 4 seasons. Tristan chased the 5:00 mile for 3 years before shattering this year. And Gino has set the record for most 11:0-something 2 miles and 5:0-something miles.

3 YEAR SENIORS
Amanda Gogna
Reina Heinz
Yesenia Herrera
Christina Young
Some of the distance girls started out on a sort of JV taxi squad that had to use the white uniforms because we didn’t have enough new green ones. Over the years, however, people like Amanda, Yesenia and Reina improved tremendously to become valuable JV scorers at dual meets. Christina has been a very versatile athlete, sprinting, jumping and hurdling during her 3 years on the team.

2 YEAR SENIORS
Francesca Cannata-Bowman
David Wong
Nicholas Wong
Francesca was a successful cross country runner a freshman but was unable to come out for track & field until her junior year. David competed as a sophomore but took junior year off to study and returned this year. Nicholas is the only Varsity thrower to be on the team both this year and last.

1 YEAR SENIOR
Sean Mulligan
Sean was finally convinced to give track a try after 3 years of cross country running.

The 4 year team members have made great improvement over the years. Back in 2001 the theme was “2001: track & field odyssey”. Check out the old photos of them (remember the digital camera technology wasn’t as good back then so the photos are not the best). - Jason ran the 65H in 12.12 (now runs the 110H in 15.96) - Chris was the Outstanding 1st Year Jumper with a leap of 16-9 (current PR, 19-2) - Justin’s 300H best was 51.4 (current PR, 44.8) - Tristan ran the 1600 in 5:15 (current PR, 4:48) - Gino ran the 3200 in 11:50 (current PR, 11:00..although he swears it’s 10:59) - Clarissa was the JV Champ in the Shot Put at 28-9 (current PR 33-11).

Thank you to all the seniors who have put so much time and energy into the GREATNESS of the SHCP Track & Field program.

First Place in Fresno
Fresno Relays Girls Champs
Celebrating 1st place

At the 77th annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays, the Fightin’ Irish came away with two 1st place finishes.  The Varsity Girls won the small schools division while sophomore James Mabrey captured the High Jump in 6 feet 2 inches.

This is the first invitational championship for the Irish since 2003 when the girls won the Serra Top 7 Invitational.  “When I saw the heat sheets I noticed we had a lot of people seeded near the top so I thought we might have a chance,” said 7th year Irish head coach Andy Chan, “But we had no one entered in 4 of the field events and I wasn’t sure we could win the meet with 4 zeroes like that.”

It was the epitome of a team effort for the Irish as not a single girl placed 1st in her event but SHCP had 11 different people score points and scored in 11 of the 16 events.  In the end, all the points were crucial as the Irish won by a slim margin:

  1. SHCP – 60.60

  2. Templeton – 53.50

  3. Serra (Gardena) – 53.33

  4. El Diamante – 51.33

In all there were 27 girls teams at the meet.

The meet got off to a good start for the Irish, when the 4X100 team of Brittany Jackson, Veronica Martinez, Faihza Hill and Lauren Bell ran a season best 51.69 to place 2nd.  The time is the fastest run in the 7 years Chan has been the SHCP head coach.  Early on, the Irish were staying amongst the team leaders thanks to points from Rachel Giovannetti (2nd in the 1600) and Martinez (8th in the 100H).

“All of a sudden we got a bunch of points in the 400 (Jackson and Ellyse Barrios) and 100 (Hill and Bell),” explained Chan, “What was huge for us was that no only were our high seeds like Brittany and Faihza placing but people like Ellyse and Lauren were fighting successfully to get us a point or two here and there with 7th and 8th place finishes.”  Also, a bunch of the events that the Irish had no one in were over and still SHCP was amongst the leaders.  Then Danielle McCray earned 5 points in the 800 and the 3200 results, which was actually the first race of the day, finally got posted and Natalie Martinez (4th) and Rhiannon Cadelinia(7th)  earned 7 points.

“That’s when I knew we had a chance,” said Chan.  There were just 5 events left and the Irish had taken their first lead of the meet.  “The next hour was just fun chaos,” said Chan, “James was in the High Jump Final and Javieree called me on my cell to tell me to come watch and I almost hung up on him because I was stressed about the team score.  I sent Coach Kevin Yamabe to the clerk of the course to find out what the uniforms of the teams in contention looked like because I didn’t even know who we were battling.”

And things kept going well for the Irish.  As is the tradition at meets at Fresno State, the PA announcer introduces the two finalists in the field events and they play music and get the crowd pumped up to support the field event athletes.  This time it was James Mabrey they were talking about.  On his first try at 6-2 he cleared.  The other athlete missed on his 3 attempts and James was the winner.  With the crowd looking on James was the center of attention as he took 3 good attempts at 6-3.  During this whole time the PA announcer (thanks to Jav Pruitt) talked about SHCP and the fact that we don’t even have a high jump facility to practice on.

In the 300H, Veronica Martinez and Helena Silva kept the Irish in the lead with 5.5 more points.  And in the Shot Put, Kira Noel brought home still more points with a 6th place.  Despite not scoring in the Triple Jump, the Irish pretty much clinched the meet when Jackson placed 3rd in the 200 with an excellent time of 27.37.  The 4th place finish was just icing on the cake for the Irish as they earned the team championship and were invited down on to the track to collect the perpetual trophy.

“We came to this meet 3 years ago,” said Chan, “Back in 2002, I brought 4 freshmen because they were hard working and it appeared that they were going to be the people we built the team around.  Those 4 were Rachel Giovannetti, Danielle McCray, Helena Silva and Joe Wettstein.  And all 4 contributed greatly to our success at this meet this time around.  It was great to bring them back to this meet and it was great to see how much they have improved over the years.”  Giovannetti, McCray and Silva accounted for 18.25 of SHCP’s 60.5 points.

For the boys, in addition to Mabrey in the High Jump, the Irish earned points with Wettstein’s 8th in the 100, Vince Fontela’s 6th in the Long Jump and 4th place tie in the High Jump and a 5th in the 4X100 (Fontela, Wettstein, Christian Santa Maria and Pruitt).  “Even though the boys didn’t put as many points on the board as we would have liked,” said Chan, “I was pleased with things.  We brought a better more complete boys team than we did 3 years ago.  The senior boys are working hard to finish this out in style.  James just put himself on the map in the CCS for the High Jump.  And don’t forget we went to Fresno without Christian Hill-Smith (away visiting colleges), who ran 11.09 and made the 100 finals at Stanford just last week.”

“It was a real nice trip to Fresno,” said Chan, “We talked in the hotel about making a good impression on the other schools so that they knew who we were and respected how hard we compete.  Based on the number of times I heard out school announced on the PA during the meet, I would say we were successful on that front.”

“Things are coming together nicely for this team,” said Chan, referring to things like Mabrey being his first 6 foot high jumper, Hill-Smith being ranked in the top 6 in the CCS for the 100 and 200 and the girls 4X100 creeping close to the school record.  “We have some real good athletes out this year, especially the ones from the basketball teams,” said sprint coach Layman Reid.  “Andy’s been talking to team about making some noise at the WCAL meets and WCAL Finals in the next few weeks,” said hurdle coach Kevin Yamabe, “I’ve been coaching here 4 years and it’s exciting to be having those kinds of conversations at this time of year.”

The Irish Track & Field team resumes normal practice on Monday April 4th at Kezar at 3:30pm.  The next meets are:
Wed Apr 6 at Riordan (boys only), 3:00pm
Sat Apr 9 at the Bronco Bella Vista Invit, 9:00am
Wed Apr 13 at Mitty (this is the next WCAL meet for the Varsity Girls, who are currently tied for 1st place in league with a 2-0 dual meet record), 3:00pm

Good Things Come in Threes
Good things come in 3_collage
Great stuff! Thank you Margaret Gallagher for the picture from Penn Relays.
A lot of things to brag about lately relating to SHCP Track & Field.

CHRISTIAN SANTA MARIA WINS SCHOLARSHIP
Senior Christian Santa Maria was recently named the recipient of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame China Lang Scholarship.  Christian will be honored at a dinner on May 21 (same day as CCS and Graduation!).  This scholarship honors the late Elwood "China" Lang, former teacher, coach, and administrator with the SFUSD from 1940-1973.  Each year the SFPHF presents a $1,500 college scholarship to one male and one female graduating San Francisco high school student athlete.  The criteria encompasses athletics, academics, and citizenship.

COACH ANDY CHAN WINS CCS HONOR COACH AWARD
Coach Andy Chan recently received the CCS Honor Coach Award.  Criteria for this award include:
- Maintenance of professional standards of conduct.
- General service to the respective sport.
- Outstanding coaching accomplishments (not necessarily focused on win/loss record or championship titles).
- Additional contributions to school and community.
- Role model and inspiration/motivation to athletes, coaches, fellow teachers, administrators, parents, public.

Below is the speech Andy read upon receiving the award:

     Thank you.
I’ve read the list of previous winners and their bios and it’s quite an honor to be mentioned with so many coaches that I look up to and respect.  Winning something likes this has really made me appreciate the support I get from friends, family and loved ones.  There are a lot of all-day track meets and late nights typing up calendars and updating websites.
Of course I couldn’t be a successful coach without the support that I get from the administrators and faculty at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
I think my assistant coaches do an amazing job, too, especially given the fact that we have over 100 kids on the team and no home track facility.  I’m especially proud that my first high school coach, the man who got me started in this sport, has been an asst coach with me at SHC for the last 7 years.
But most of all, winning this award has made me think about the student athletes that I have coached over the years.  Year after year they make me laugh and they make me cry.  To me, coaching is all about the kids.  My goal has always been to provide the best possible high school sports experience for the athletes.  I want to make them passionate about track & field and about working hard.
Passion.  I feel blessed that I have found work in life that I am so passionate about.  Two times in my life I have been at a crossroads in terms of making career decisions and I am thankful that both times, I made the choice that has allowed me to keep coaching.  Since it was announced that I was winning this award I have gotten lots of congratulations on the award.  But to me, the reward is getting to go out there everyday and have athletes call me, “Coach”.

SHANNON ROWBURY (’02) ANCHORS DUKE TO WIN AT PENN RELAYS
The Penn Relays is probably the largest track & field meet in the US.  The meet’s in its 111th year.  924 high schools and 241 colleges participated.  The stands at Franklin Field are packed with over 25,000 fans.  There are 3 days of competition with over 400 races.  Shannon ran in the glamour event on Thursday April 28th –the College Women Distance Medley Championship.  Shannon ran the anchor leg (1600 meters) after her Duke teammates covered the first three legs (1200-400-800).  Shannon took the baton in a virtual tie with Arkansas.  The pace was slow and North Carolina and Villanova caught up.  Soon it was a 3-person race with Shannon running patiently and in control.  Finally with 450 meters to go Shannon surged away to the win.  The press coverage was pretty phenomenal as there were pictures of Shannon with arms raised crossing the finish line on all kinds of websites and in the NY Times.  Congratulations Shannon!

Senior Day_2005
THANKS, Seniors!
As is now tradition, the Thursday after the last WCAL dual meet is Senior Day.  Coach Andy took 15 of the seniors (Albert had an AP Exam) for an off-campus lunch at Round Table Pizza to thank the seniors for all that they've contributed to the program.  Then at practice, the seniors were introduced to the team and given flowers.

The last 3 years, we’ve had large senior classes:

2003 – 16 people.  6 four year people.  The class that changed the most.

2004 – 14 people.  6 four year people.  The class that went through a lot of change/experiences.

2005 – 16 seniors:

1st year

MEGAN ANDERSON
Seems likes she’s been on the team longer.  Another in the long list of Irish Dancers turned track runners.  Immediately bonded with the distance team.

2nd Year

KIRA NOEL
Easy to forget this is only her 2nd year.  2nd place at JV last year.  Our #1 thrower all season this year.  Handled leading the team well.  I only wish we had more time.

KEVIN DECEOURSTY
An example of just working hard, not complaining and things will work out.  Finished last in the 200 a lot last year but found his niche to be a competitive distance runner for us as a senior.

3rd Year

NATALIE MARTINEZ
Has come a long ways…started as a top JV runner.  Improved to be on varsity.  This year traveled to all the invitationals.  Added her name to the short list of “Athlete Andy Picks on the Most”.

BRIAN CONWAY
Started as a distance runner.  Still a pretty good one but he likes to hurdle.  Put so much heart into the X-C team last fall, how could I not let him continue as a hurdler.  Quietly does a very nice job supporting and cheering on everyone on the team.

ALBERT CHENG
Another that started as a distance runner.  But ended up shifting to hurdles.  I appreciate how he brought a strong work ethic to practice everyday.  And I still am really sorry he threw up at practice because Veronica’s leg cramp was so grotesque.

JOE WETTSTEIN
Showed great promise freshman year but was injured and did not come out as a soph.  Was strong again as a junior and has had an outstanding senior campaign.  Strong for us from the 100 through the 800 and not bad at the hurdles, either (and was a 16 foot LJ freshmen year).

4th Year – new record, 9 four-year team members

BERNADETTE FRIAS
Has changed so much.  Was barely on the team wearing the white uniform as a freshmen.  But worked at it and progressed to be a top JV runner for us (and a Varsity runner for us in X-C).  Beset by a lot of injuries and I want her to know I appreciate and respect how much pain she’s been willing to endure.  She’s set a nice example for others.

MELANIE SCANNELL
Not the senior year she expected.  But what a comeback.  It was 8 months ago she lay out there in the plaza with a broken leg.  She’s been through a lot of pain, a lot of emotional heartache.  But I think this whole year has made her appreciate the ability to run, and how much her friends and family love her.  For me, it’s so awesome to see her back out there competing at the varsity level.

KIM PACATTE
Next year will be the first year I ever coach at SHC without a Pacatte on the team….7 straight year and it only took me a year to stop saying Pa-Catte.  Someone who I think is very likely to continue running road races on her own because she loves to run.  She’s always worked hard and had high expectations.  I hope when this is all done next week, she takes some time to reflect back on the positive things she’s done and feel proud of herself.  I know I am.

RHIANNON CADELINIA
Other than Shannon Rowbury, probably the person that’s spent the most time with me over a 4 year career.  14 overnight trips.  She reminds me a lot of myself as an athlete…the solid consistent performer that the coach can always count on at both practice and meets.  An example of how well she knows me, is on a day I changed practice locations, she was able to figure out to go to Strawberry Hill without me telling her.

DANIELLE MCCRAY
Another who started out as a sprinter in the “Accelerate” Coach Greg days.  Has always been open to trying new things and has been impressive in her ability to always be ready and always give a strong effort, whether it’s a 400 ,800 or mile.  As a coach, it’s so nice to have someone who will just go out there and do it.  No complaints, no excuses, no debating or negotiating about it….just show me where the start line is.

RACHEL GIOVANNETTI
Talk about a competitor.  The eye of the tiger.  I love that look.  When I see it, I know she’s locked in and ready to go.  And I think it’s raised the level of competitiveness from her teammates around her.  I will miss how easy it is to coach her.  I just tell her what I want and it’s as good as done.  And I love that nickname – G-PASTA.

VERONICA MARTINEZ
Not the senior year she wanted but I want to remind her that being injured won’t be what you remember in 5 years.  You’ll remember the good times, like me flexing in front of you and calling you while you’re at the movies.  And me telling you I can’t wait ‘til the Martinez’s are gone.  Well the truth of the matter is I’m really going to miss that face with the big braces smiling at me everyday.

HELENA SILVA
Always works hard but at times seemed that fate was always against her, the competition was strong in her event, an untimely injury or illness.  But I believe when you work hard, eventually something good will happen.  And that was this season.  Doing a tremendous job in both the 100H and 300H  and now getting recruited by Humboldt State.  I’m proud of her because she deserves this.

CHRISTIAN SANTA MARIA
The only guy here.  It was 3 years ago this week that myself, Andy Lee and Matt Gonzalez cornered him at St Francis.  It would become known as the “Nucleus speech”.  He had been a flakey freshmen, seemingly missing more practices than he attended.  But instead of giving up on him or telling him not to come back, we told him he had ability.  And we saw him as part of our future.  He’s told me that that talk inspired him.  So I’ll take credit for all the fine things he’s brought to our program since then.

16 special people.  I also want to mention Alex Apalit and Javieree Pruitt who were unable to complete this final season but have meant so much to the program through the years.

How will I remember this class?  I think this is the class that I’ve anticipated their senior year the most.  11 of these people were team members in 2002.  From day one we saw that this was a dedicated and talented group that would most likely stay together.  The fact that they were dedicated was more important to me than their talent.  We lost people along the way and picked up new people.  But every year this core group remained and continued to validate that our initial evaluation of their commitment was correct.  I got to know this class very well and we often talked about how great their senior year would be.  And it was.  Not because we set all kinds of records and won all out dual meets…but because we were together.

So it is with sadness that I say, thank you.  And I say good luck at the LAST meet of your SHCP career next week.  The CLASS OF 2005.

CCS Finals_06_Vince and James
For the first time since 2002, the Irish had 2 athletes competing at the CCS Finals.

Qualifying for the CCS Finals for the second year in a row, senior Vince Fontela closed out his 4-year career at SHCP with a PR in the Triple Jump.  The event included some drama due to strange officiating decisions but in the end, Fontela placed 8th with a jump of 43-2.5.  "Vince has persevered for 4 years and the sequence of events at CCS was a snapshot of those 4 years," said head coach Andy Chan, "Long jump is supposed to be his main event with the triple jump as his second event.  And he wasn't even supposed to qualify because he was 11th and only 8 qualify.  But we find out on Monday that due to some measuring inconsistencies they decided to advance 12 so Vince got a second life.  Then tonight there are all kinds of delays and the officials changed their mind halfway through the event about how they were going to advance people.  But Vince just kept fighting and jumping just like he has for the last 4 years."

James Mabrey placed 5th in the High Jump at 6-2.  That was tied for the third best jump of the night but James placed 5th due to the tie breaker procedures of the high jump (number of misses).  "James showed he could consistently jump 6-2," said Coach Chan, "The misses he had early on were the difference but I am still very proud that James made it this far and placed.  We're already talking about next year and making it to the State Meet."

Mabrey's medal was the first CCS medal by an SHCP athlete since Michelle Gallagher '03 placed 3rd in the 3200 in 2003 and the first SHCP male athlete to medal since Tony Miranda '00 placed 1st in the Discus in 2000.  Below is the list of the 13 CCS medals (top 6 in each event earn medals) earned by Fightin' Irish track & field athletes in the last 8 years ("the Chanman era"):

1999 - Shannon Rowbury, 1st-800
1999 - Tony Miranda, 4th-Discus
2000- Shannon Rowbury, 1st-800
2000 - Shannon Rowbury, 3rd-3200
2000 - Tony Miranda, 1st-Discus
2001 - Ahimsa Hodari, 5th-100H
2001 - Ahimsa Hodari, 3rd-300H
2001 - Shannon Rowbury, 1st-800
2002 - Shannon Rowbury, 1st-1600
2002 - Shannon Rowbury, 1st-800

Senior Day_2006.jpg
May 1 was not just team pictures, it was also Senior Day...a day to recognize and thank the seniors for all that they have contributed to the program.  With just over a week left in the season, it's time to get a little sentimental.  Some excerpts from what was said at the ceremony:

Something that says we have the SHCP Track & Field program in place and going good.  The last 4 years we’ve had 16, 14, 16 and now 15 seniors.

This time of year I always try to think of what unique thing symbolizes the senior class or how I will remember the group of seniors.  It hit me last week that this is a group of battlers.  You’ve always been competitive, which means you aren’t afraid to battle the competition.  That also meant battling your coach at times.  You guys made me earn my pay.  We’ve had talks about:

Being on-time to practice, working harder at practice, just being at practice.  What event you should be doing.  Your attendance or lack thereof at the conditioning workouts.  Listening to your body regarding injuries.  Making good time management decisions.  Whether or not you were even going to come out.  Who should get to travel.

I learned to be a better coach because of you, because you forced me to consider different options and to see things from your point of view.  Hopefully, you became a better track & field athlete and person because I kept you on track towards the team’s goals.  And if I had to choose between a group with no gumption versus a group that cares about how they do and are not afraid to stand up for what they want, I will take the latter every time.

So here’s the Class of 2006:

1st Year
Stephanie Nevins – Great job to make the team as a 1st year senior.  Battled injuries but thankfully got in one race at least.

2nd year
Sherie Lo Giudice – One of the most improved athletes in my coaching history.  :35 faster in the 1600 and 1:51 improvement in the 3200 since soph year.

Jack Shepherd – Progressed a lot as a person and an athlete.  Started high school with a lot of aspirations in football and basketball.  Became a successful distance runner who went to the State Meet in XC.  And now finishes high school as the team’s leading 800 and 400 runner.

3rd Year
Sarina Crivello – Started in distance.  Hurdled in the middle.  And has been pretty impressive when going back to distance to finish.

Christian Hill-Smith – The fastest guy I’ve ever had at 10.96.  Outstanding FS Sprinter as a soph.  Outstanding Varsity Sprinter as a junior.  Has had the nagging hamstring which has been frustrating for all of us.  But has done exactly what we want to re-had and looks ready to give it one last try at WCAL next week.

Eddie Hynson – Another distance runner, turned hurdler.  Glad he came out this last season.  I’ll never forget his amazing race to end soph year with a sub-5 in the mile.  Now in just 1 season of work is one of our top hurdlers.

Sam Johnson – Has progressed every year in both Shot Put and Discus.  Ran the key 3rd leg in the Weightman Relay at SI.

Chris Lardizabal – If only this guy was a couple inches taller….  He would tear up those hurdles.  Always looks fast this time of year in his specialty, the 300H.

Joshua Ling – Recipient of the Unsung Hero Award his freshman and sophomore year.  Varsity letter winner as a freshman and sophomore.  Working very hard to keep his form so he can run some PR’s to finish off his career at SHCP.

Liana Louie – Voted Most Promising Thrower as a soph.  Has always been a bit better in the SP than DT but hopefully will PR in both in the coming weeks.

Humberto Roque – Has been chasing 11 min for 2 miles since soph year, which is why the 10:49 at Serra Top 7 was so satisfying.  His statement last week really sums up the attitude he’s brought to the team.  When asked if he wants to run the mile, the 2 mile or both at WCAL, he said “for 3 years every time you’ve asked me something like that, coach, I’ve said ‘I want to do both but I will do whatever you want or need me to do’”.

Nathan Villanueva – A solid distance runner for us for 3 years.  If he can PR in the mile on Wed, I promised him I’d name a stretch after him so he better get after it.

4th Year
Vince Fontela – As a soph, Outstanding Varsity Jumper.  As a junior, a CCS Finalist and SHCP T&F Athlete of the Year.  Has improved from 19-0 to 20-7 to 21-5 in the LJ.  Also very good in the TJ and HJ and can run a good relay leg when we need it.

Nick Slepnikoff – Started off as a skinny distance runner with glasses.  Then he grew.  Became a thrower as a junior and was Outstanding Varsity Thrower that first season.  Our team leader in the SP and DT, amongst the top 5 guys I’ve ever had in the SP.

Krystal Yee – As a freshman, Outstanding JV Sprinter and WCAL Champ in the 100.  Has battled injuries and ended up moving to distance because she loves being around me so much.  In her career at SHCP she has competed in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, LJ and 4X1 & 4X4.

So even though we had our battles (and you made me work real hard as a coach), in the end, we have battled together.  And I look forward to 2 more meets of battling it out against the WCAL with you.

Class of 2007

One of the SHCP Track & Field traditions is to recognize the seniors before practice during the last week of the season.  This year we have 8 seniors.  4 of them are 3 year team members and 4 of them are 4 year team members.

3 Years
Monique Calvello – Would always come out after basketball, which meant we got her pretty late in the season.  But I am really glad she came out and wish more basketball players would follow suit.  I think Coach Fong is probably pretty nice change of pace style-wise for her after basketball season.  Our top Shot Putter the last 2 seasons with a PR 30-10.

Colin Vranizan – Solid distance runner.  Came up just short of breaking 5 minutes last year (5:01).  Then was injured very early this season.  For awhile it looked like he wouldn’t even get a chance to break 5 this year.  But as he always has, he quietly kept working hard and was rewarded with a magical race at Bellarmine where he stayed on pace and left it all out there in running 4:58.
Will attend UC Santa Barbara.

Brittany Jackson – Has been a mainstay on our varsity sprint group for 3 years.  Consistently around 62 for the 400 and 27 for the 200 the last 3 years.  The only one still left that was on the team back in 2005 when we won the Fresno Relays.  As a sophomore ran on relay teams with Tasia Davis, Faihza Hill, Lauren Bell, Veronica Martinez, Danielle McCray and Helena Silva.  Now as a senior is a leader on relay teams with sophomores Desirae, Alexis, Reilly and Tammia.
Will attend Howard University.

James Mabrey – Our all everything athlete.  School record holder in the Triple Jump (43-10.75).  Tied for the school record in the High Jump (6-4).  5th place in the HJ last year at CCS.  Also a strong performer in the hurdles.  But maybe best of all, a great guy.  Someone who gets the energy going for the team.
Will attend Los Angeles Southwest College.

4 Years
Ethan WicklundDistance runner that’s improved every year.  A mainstay on varsity distance relay teams since his sophomore year.  At this point, can run with anyone in the WCAL.  His PR’s of 2:02, 4:37 and 10:19, will make him one of the best distance runners in school history.
Will attend UC Berkeley.

Justin Abantao – One of the most valuable distance runners I have ever had.  Because of the Mike Bullards, Nick Cannata-Bowmans and Ethan Wicklunds, has never worn the hat as our #1 guy.  But that didn’t stop him from training like a #1 runner.  Always attacking the hard workouts.  Rewarded with a great triple at Bellarmine (4:41, 2:07, 54.7).
Will attend UC Berkeley.

Jeremy InfusinoThe first 4-year thrower since 2004 and the first male athlete to throw 4 years in the Chanman era.  Through the years he’s earned Most Promising Thrower, Outstanding F/S Thrower and Most Improved Thrower awards.  38-3 in the SP and 109-5 in the Discus.
Will attend San Jose State.

Nick Cannata-Bowman – It’s been a tough season because of injuries this season but he never gave in and for that I am proud of him.  The fact that he has run 4:36 for the 1600 off of 50% of the training speaks to his talent.  The fact that he is willing to go out and compete in that Irish uniform when he knows he is less than at his best speaks to his heart.
Will attend Seattle University.

This time of year I always try to think of what unique thing symbolizes the senior class or how I will remember the group of seniors.  This year, I think of this group of seniors as people who changed the face of the program.  People who did things that others before them did not do.  People, who hopefully, have set a high standard for which future teams will strive for.  Among their accomplishments:

·         The lone basketball players (boy or girl) to put in more than 2 seasons with the track & field team.

·         The first boy to medal at CCS since 2000.

·         Athletes who competed at the Stanford Invitational multiple times.  The first time coming in 2nd or 3rd to last and then when they returned, placing in the top 25%.

·         Athletes who competed at the Arcadia Invitational.  The first time since 2003, the Irish have gone to this meet.

·         Athletes who strived to achieve goals and to be the best they could be, even if they weren’t the best person on the team in their event.

·         The first male to throw for 4 seasons in the Chanman era.  And who was a vital part of the program as we finally got a stable coach and program going with Coach Fong.

·         The first male distance runner to qualify for CCS in the Chanman era.

·         The person who bridged the gap from the Girls team that won at the Fresno Relays in 2005 to the Girls 4X4 today that has run 4:05.

So thank you, each and every one of you, from all of us, your coaches and teammates, for your hard work, dedication, and efforts.  You have had a lasting affect on the SHCP Track & Field Team.  Good luck at WCAL and beyond.

2008 WCAL FINALS - Irish win WCAL Championships in 6 events
2008 WCAL Champions
Coach Chan with the WCAL Champions

The Irish brought their 'A' game to the WCAL Trials and Finals, earning numerous PR's, winning 6 events, qualifying 2 athletes to CCS, and placing 4th in JV Girls and 5th in F/S Boys.

Congratulations to the JV Girls, who scored 66 points to place 4th, the Irish's highest WCAL finish since placing 3rd with 72 points in 2003 (the first year the WCAL had girls).  Leading the way for the JV Girls were champions: Nathalie Hechinger, who won the 1600 (new WCAL JV Girls record) and the 3200 by a combined total time of 0.52 seconds, Emily Chug in the Discus, and the 4X100 Relay team of Jocelyn Manalo, Bria Donaldson, Natasha Cooper, and Viana Larkin.

And also congratulations to the F/S Boys, who scored 33 points to place 5th.  That's the most points for the Irish in the F/S Boys division since the 2001 team scored 40 and that's the highest team finish in the Chanman era.  Leading the way for the F/S Boys were champions: Jarrett Moore in the 800 and Ryan Santiago in the 300 Hurdles.

The Irish had 2 athletes qualify for CCS.  Junior Reilly Hall placed 2nd in the 800 in 2:20.93 to qualify for CCS in track & field for the first time (Reilly has run at CCS twice in cross country).  Senior Jocelyn Rodriguez will run at CCS for the 5th time in her career (three times in cross country and now twice in track & field) as she qualified by beting the CCS time standard, coming in 4th in the 3200 in 11:26.78.

The seniors, running their last meet, also had strong and memorable days:

- Jocelyn Rodriguez - qualified for CCS in the 3200, so it wasn't her last meet.

- Tommy Redmond - a great triple - 4:49.45/2:09.50/56.1.

- Michael Cunningham - sub-5 in the 1600 for the first time (4:59.09).

- Nerissa Martinez - season best in the 1600 by 12 seconds at 5:46.44.

- Sarah Spillane - Improved from 6th to 5th in the 100H, running a season-best 17.37 in her last hurdle race.

- Matt Yee - after just missing Finals in both the 110H and 300H, got one last race as he anchored our 4X400 for the final time, splitting another 56 to cap a great season.

"Overall it was a great way to end the season," said Coach Andy Chan, who is completing his 10th season has head coach at SHCP.  The 129 combined total points is the most since the 2003 season.  "What I liked most is that we were competitive in a variety of events," said Chan, "It's the most league champions I've ever had in WCAL and they were in a variety of events - distance, sprint relay, hurdles, and throwing.  Plus we had finalists in almost every event.  I thank the senior for leading us to a terrific season and I challenge our returning athletes to strive to do even better next year."

Check out lots of photos from WCAL Trials and Finals in the Album Section.

Class of 2008
Seniors_2008

One of our traditions here with the SHCP Track & Field program is to recognize the seniors before practice during the last week of the season.  Today we honor a very large group of seniors - 14 people.

2 2nd year, 6 3-year, and 6 4-year team members.

Let’s introduce them.

2nd Year

Raymond Fernandez – A consistent force for the team both at the meets but maybe most importantly in the weight room the last 2 years.  I would like to publically thank him because I think he was one of the people who helped get the weight room sessions for the throwers going so strong.  A nice PR 36-0 at Riordan and hopefully one more PR in him for next week.Attending USF.

Sarah Spillane – Played softball her first two spring seasons but came to her senses and came out for track & field as a junior.  Made an immediate impact as a top hurdler and even dabbled in the TJ.  A WCAL Finalist in 100H, 300H, and TJ in her first year on the team.  100H is her best event but she showed her all-around athletic ability when she tried the event she was going to tryout for initially – the throws, on Wed and threw 24-11 in the SP. 2007 Outstanding Varsity Hurdler.  Attending Sonoma St.

3rd Year

Kristine Kiwata – Has had to juggle choir and throwing the last 3 years.  It’s been tough but she made it through.  Part of this close-knit senior group of throwers who helped with the coaching transistion, became regulars in the weight room and hopefully along the way had some fun, too. 2007 Most Improved Thrower Award.  Attending University Nevada Las Vegas.

Kaeneth Dayao – Has shown tremendous dedication to the program.  One year as a sprinter, one year as a manager, and one year with distance.  That shows that he really wants to be on the track & field team and is willing to do whatever to help the team.  And I am happy to have had him.  The timing of a mid-season injury and the English subject A test, means he closed out his Irish career on Wed at Riordan.  But he did it in style - with a :16 PR in the mile.Attending UC Irvine.

Anastasia Villalobos – A valuable member of our throwing corps since she’s been on the team.  Has been on all the overnights: Cottonwood, Chico, and Reno.  A WCAL Finalist in the SP last year.  Very exciting to see her throwing PR’s in both events as she nears the end of her career here.  She fulfilled a long time dream of hers by running the 100 against SH Prep the other day.  And how well liked and respected was shown by the cheers for her during the 100 – all 16+ seconds of it!2006 Outstanding JV Girls Thrower.  Attending UC Riverside.

Tommy Redmond – Really has stepped up this season to be not just a varsity runner but one that compete at a high level.  I like how he’s displayed this fearless attitude all season and I credit him for helping instill it in others.  More than once this season I got very excited when I would see him going for it in the last 200 meters, just ignoring the pain and laying it on the line.  One more meet to go and it’s at Serra, his favorite track, where he PR’ed :20 in the mile soph year.2006 Most Improved Distance Runner.  Attending San Jose St.

Jonathan Juntado – Unfortunately has been injured the whole season.  The words that come to mind when I think of him is “great teammate”.  He has done everything in his power the last 4 years of XC and 3 years of T&F to help the team.  Often that was by his own strong running.  And other times it was by supporting and encouraging others with sage advice.  Even though he likely has a torn meniscus in his knee, I let him race against Riordan so he could line up and race with the guys one last time.  As I watched him run, I was flooded with memories of 2005 and the 1st State Meet.  In true-JJ fashion, even in the final 50 meters of his last race, he looked back and encouraged a teammate to keep it going.  What a great teammate right up to the very end!2006 Outstanding F/S Boys Distance Runner.  Attending San Jose St.

Joseph Sciancalepore – Such a hard worker.  Has done everything I’ve asked this year, being a leader, attending every practice, and being a model of consistent and hard word.  He isn’t built like a distance runner and I think other teams may have been surprised to see him line up for the mile.  But they get really surprised when they realize how fast he is.2007 Most Improved Distance Runner.  Attending UC Davis.

4th Year – Wearing the shirts from each of the past 4 seasons

Christine Santa Maria – 2005 (Freshman – OutStanding on the Track).  Another person who’s juggled choir and track & field.  Every year I thought, this is the year she’s going to have to give something up.  And every year she somehow found a way to manage it all.  Maybe Mr Bohm deserves a flower for being so flexible.  In any case, came back from ACL surgery on her knee and has a solid senior year with PR’s in the SP (26-5) and Discus (86-10).2005 Outstanding JV Girls Thrower and 2006 Unsung Hero Award.  Attending UC Davis.

Michael Cunningham - 2006 (Sophomore – What Happens on SHCP Track & Field is Amazing Feats).  Someone who has experienced a lot of growth both physically and otherwise over the years.  He started senior year just like he started freshmen year, bugging me about trying different events.  This year I gave in and let him throw discus.  Showed great heart at Stanford, when he fought with everything he had to keep us up there in the 4X8, even though we would later find out, he had a mild case of mono.  I know he’ll fight to make the 800 final next week.Attending UC Davis.

Nerissa Martinez - 2006 (Sophomore – What Happens on SHCP Track & Field is Amazing Feats).  I think I have more in common with this next person than I usually care to admit.  We’re both stubborn.  We both think we’re funny.  We both want to be the center of attention.  Hmmmm.  Maybe she will make a pretty good coach some day.  I thank her for 4 years of always being out there and always trying to get the last word in with me.  You’ve kept me on my toes.  I wish senior year had gone better in terms of your race times.  But since it hasn’t and we can’t go back and change the past, I am thankful that we are ending on a positive note, because that’s the memory of you I want to cherish.2005, 2006 & 2007 Most Improved Distance Runner.  Attending St. Mary’s College.

Jim McHugh - 2007 (Junior – Strength.  Speed.  Spirit.).  Has always been this in-between distance and sprints kind of person….middle distance.  Thanks to Coach Art’s speed mechanics and my distance training, we built this terrific 800 runner.  All season long he was our big gun in the 4X800 and 4X400, who I strategically ran 2nd leg to almost insure we would be in the lead or near the lead at the start of the 3rd leg.  Now I just hope that hamstring heals so he can make a run at 2:00 and CCS in the 800.2005 Most Improved Sprinter, 2006 Outstanding Middle Distance Runner and 2007 Unsung Hero Award.  Attending Chico St.

Jocelyn Rodriguez – 2008 (Senior – Bringin’ Our ‘A’ Game).  An amazing story in terms of improvement.  As a freshman she was 23rd in the JV Girls 800.  As a sophomore she broke 6 minutes in the mile.  As a junior she could run back-to-back miles in under 6 minutes.  Now she can run 2 miles in 11:27 (under 5:45 per mile) all by herself.  A state meet qualifier in XC, a CCS qualifier in track.  And one of the most coachable athletes I have ever had.  I couldn’t be prouder to be sending her off to Yale University where she will continue to run next year.2007 Outstanding Varsity Distance Runner.  Attending Yale University.

Matthew Yee – 2005 (Freshman – OutStanding on the Track).  Like I said at Riordan, I wish everyone could have a moment like Matt did in the last 100 meters.  What a feeling, your whole team cheering for you and a Riordan runner bearing down on you in the final steps.  I was so proud of Matt.  For 4-years he worked hard and never complained, basically got the job done.  Those are the athletes that as a coach, you want good things to happen for them.  The proverbial, they deserve it.  Well, I’m sure I get no argument that Matt deserves it.  And I am so happy that no matter what happens next week, where he goes to college, and what he does in life….he will always remember anchoring our 4X4 to the win at Riordan in his last WCAL dual meet.2005 Most Promising Jumper and 2007 Unsung Hero Award.  Attending San Jose St.

The Irish at the CCS Championships and State Meet
Good Luck CCS_08
Reilly Hall and Jocelyn Rodriguez - 2008 CCS Qualifiers

With the 2009 track & field season about to begin, now is a good time to celebrate some of the successes of the past.

Since the 1999 season, SHCP has been fortunate to have some very talented athletes on the team. SHCP athletes have won 6 Central Coast Section (CCS) championships, had 9 top 3 finishes at CCS and qualified 4 athletes in 8 events for the State Meet.  Shannon Rowbury has led the way for SHCP, winning CCS in the 800 a record 4 times and the 1600 once. She also added 2 State Meet titles (2001 - 800 meters, 2002 - 1600 meters). She was not alone, however, as Tony Miranda won CCS in the Discus and placed 6th at State in 2000, Ahimsa Hodari qualified for State in the 300H in 2001 and Michelle Gallagher qualified for State (where she medaled with a 4th place finish) in the 3200 meters in 2003.

SHCP have sent their share of athletes to the CCS competition.  In 2008, the Irish qualified 2 athletes (Reilly Hall-800, and Jocelyn Rodriguez-3200) to the CCS Meet.  Hall would place 17th in the CCS Trials and Rodriguez would place 7th in the CCS Finals.  Along with Hall, the current SHC team also has Desirae Payton (2007-400 meters) and Alexis Garrett-Frank (2007-800 meters) who have CCS experience.

Below is the list of SHC's 15 CCS medal winning performances (top 6 in each event earn medals):

1999 - Shannon Rowbury, 1st-800
1999 - Tony Miranda, 4th-Discus
2000- Shannon Rowbury, 1st-800
2000 - Shannon Rowbury, 3rd-3200
2000 - Tony Miranda, 1st-Discus
2001 - Ahimsa Hodari, 5th-100H
2001 - Ahimsa Hodari, 3rd-300H

Keep in mind that the criteria for qualifying for CCS has changed over the years.  There used to be 3 rounds of CCS (as opposed to the 2 rounds that exist currently) and the top 5 boys at WCAL Finals and the top 3 girls at the now defunct GPSL Finals qualified.  The criteria to qualify now is much more difficult (top 3 for the boys and top 2 for the girls at WCAL).

It’s a tribute to the strong SHCP coaches that we’ve qualified so many people in so many different events.  Despite not having a throwing facility, the Irish qualified a girl in the Shot Put for 5 straight years (1999-2003) and Tony Miranda was a 2-time qualifier in the Discus (including CCS Champion in 2000) and also qualified once in the Shot Put.  Jon Jung (1999), Jason Cacho (2000) and Peter Fleming (2001 & 2002) kept SHCP represented in the 400 meters for 4 straight years.  In 2003-04, Nick Lien (110H, 2003), Andy Lee (300H, 2003) and Jason Kobuchi (110H, 2004) have shown the Irish hurdling prowess.  And from 2005-07, Vince Fontela and Mabrey showed the Irish can be a force in all 3 jumping events as well.

Congratulations to all the CCS qualifiers over the years:
