NO-CUT COACH FINALIST FOR NATIONAL AWARD
8/7/2008 12:15:00 AM
STONINGTON, Conn. - Stonington High School girls' tennis coach George Crouse was named one of 12 finalists this week for the 2008 United States Tennis Association Starfish Award.

| George Crouse |
The Starfish Award, which honors high school tennis coaches who implement a "no-cut" policy for their teams, will be honored at the 38th annual USTA Tennis Teachers' Conference in New York, Aug. 25.
"We are extremely proud of what George has accomplished not only because his team has been a model for competitive, championship-caliber high school programs, but because of his ability to combine success with opportunity," said Deirdre McCormack, USTA New England's Director of Community Tennis. "For every champion player Stonington produces, there are dozens more lifelong tennis players whom, if cuts had to have been made, may not have had the chance to experience a sport that they'll continue to enjoy for a long time."
Crouse was also honored in May as the Connecticut High School Coaches' Association girls' tennis coach of the year. He has coached either the boys' or girls' tennis teams at Stonington since 1973 and is 324-95 with the girls' team, which has been to three straight Class S state championship matches.

USTA Recreational Coaches Workshops for 2009
A Recreational Coach Workshop is an interactive, on-court training program designed for tennis teachers and coaches working with players at the recreational level. Each workshop is conducted by an outstanding certified tennis professional specially trained to effectively handle groups and get kids and adults to play tennis quickly in a fun and social atmosphere.
Taught by a specially trained, certified teaching professional, this active 6-hour session covers:
• Teaching large groups
• The games-based approach to coaching
• Running effective team practices
• Games and drills every coach should know
Who attends a Recreational Coach Workshop?
These workshops are an excellent primer for new coaches as well as a valuable refresher course for those with teaching experience but who seek more current methods and effective tools. Past attendees include:
• Parents seeking the basics in coaching and organizing team tennis
• Park and Recreation instructors, high school, and seasonal coaches
• Coaches teaching kids and adults who are new to the game
• Current players seeking part-time teaching jobs
Upon completion of the six-hour workshop, attendees will:
• Be eligible for the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Developmental Coach Certification
• Be able to effectively run entry level groups and teams
• Receive access to the latest in transition ball technology and additional coaching resources
Our faculty are all certified by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) and/or USPTA and have received special training from the USTA. The USTA assigns trainers based on reasonable time and travel requirements. Once a trainer is assigned to a workshop, he or she will work with the host site director to ensure all appropriate arrangements are made for a successful workshop. Workshops must have a minimum of 20 participants.

What is Jr. Team Tennis?
If you love playing tennis—you’re going to love it even more as part of a team. One of the great things about the international events of Davis Cup and Fed Cup play is that those events take the decidedly individual sport of tennis and turn it into a team event. There’s a special kind of energy and excitement that results from that transformation. Even at the pro level, players like Andy, James, the Williams sisters and the Bryan brothers get especially fired up when they’re part of a team effort.
You’ve seen it—everyone does their best to make their teammates that much better. That’s what USTA Jr. Team Tennis is all about—building your game while building a team. It’s about showing your stuff—and sharing the fun.
While the object is still to outscore your opponent, Jr. Team Tennis is a different game.
The team concept adds excitement to the game, and if don’t believe players anyone who’s played in the team format, ask Bob and Mike Bryan, the official spokespersons for USTA JTT.
"We grew up playing tennis together as a team," said Bob Bryan. "USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a great way to excite young people about the game and to teach them how fun it is to play with a group."
From NCAA titles to Grand Slam champions, the Bryans might be on their way to becoming the most dominant set of tennis teammates of all time.
"Sharing the excitement and social benefits of tennis with others is one of my favorite aspects of the sport," said Mike Bryan. "Bob and I are thrilled to lend our support to the USTA Jr. Team Tennis program and the USTA, which does a great job of bringing more young people into the game."
So, you want to play and want to be part of a team. What exactly does Jr.Team Tennis mean?
JTT squads feature at least six players, are co-ed and are divided into leagues based on age and ability, from ages 10-18, and from beginners to advanced players. The format is unique and exciting: One boys’ singles match, a girls’ singles match, a boys’ double, a girls’ double and a mixed double. The winner is the team that wins the majority of the five-match series. For more information on JTT, click here.
To find a team near you, click here.
Your team has conquered the local scene, so what’s next?
JTT is a nationally-branded USTA program, so winning teams have the opportunity to take their games to the next level and advance to district, section and national playoffs. For a closer look at USTA New England's JTT program, click here.
