Now that the Super Bowl has come and gone, thoughts of spring training start to pop into our heads. Even though the first crack of the bat and pop of the mitt are still a few weeks away, the Bayhawk baseball team is already beginning preparations for what hopes to be another successful season.
The off season has been filled with exciting news for the baseball program. 2006 graduates Jose Lebron, Anthony Orsano, and Joe Van Meter, all earned baseball scholarships. Jose Lebron, an infielder, will be playing for the Bloomfield College Deacons in New Jersey. Catcher Anthony Orsano decided to stay local and continue his career playing for the Lions of Molloy College. Infielder/catcher Joe Van Meter accepted a scholarship to play for perennial national power Arizona State University.
The 2007 team received its first piece of great news when senior TJ Thomas signed a National Letter of Intent to accept a baseball scholarship from San Diego State University. The power hitting first baseman will now have the opportunity to play for and learn from head coach Tony Gwynn, a 2007 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee and one of the best hitters in baseball history.
On the field, the team looks to rely on its strong pitching once again. Led by senior Kevin Egan and junior Justin Jorgensen, the staff should once again rank near the top of the league. The infield will be anchored by slick fielding seniors Nick Shapiro, Michael Rocco, Conor Burke, and junior Gabby Lebron. While the outfield took a major hit with the loss of senior James Wilson to a season ending knee injury, hard hitting junior Dan Lackner looks to step in and take over the centerfield duties.
As the year progresses we hope to have news of the signings of more of our student athletes. We wish much success to all our graduates as they open their college seasons. Spring is always an exciting time of year, and we look forward to seeing our fans rooting us on as we make another run to the top of the NSCHSAA.
