SCOSA *needs* volunteers!
...and not just the Tennessee kind (but that's OK, too!). we need interested folks (ie parents, grandparents, teens) to help us with admin and coordination duties for the Rec soccer program. this will improve the soccer experience for _your_kids_ and their friends who play soccer in the SCOSA Rec program -- and help us provide more and better opporunities for kids in our community to learn and play soccer.

please contact Ronda Lane or another SCOSA Board member if you're willing to help us in this effort. (see the Board Contact info at left or below for more details.)

WSJ article on growing interest in US soccer youth

the Wall Street Journal has an article on Euro clubs' interest in the growing ranks of US youth soccer players...

America's Got Talent?

Europe's Top Soccer Clubs Are Flocking to Recruit U.S. Kids

Tony Carr has come to America and he wants your children. But only if they can play soccer.

Over the last year, Mr. Carr, a scout for West Ham United of England's prestigious Premier League, has joined a move by a handful of other club teams from Europe -- including Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Portugal's Benfica -- to establish outposts here in the United States, the world's last great soccer wilderness.

Their goal is to tap into the massive U.S. youth soccer market, which has about four million registered male players. While these kids are often clumsily trained and lack creativity by European standards, there are nearly as many of them as there are people in Ireland. "It would be wrong of us to dismiss this country," says Mr. Carr, a trim 58-year-old. "We have to explore."

Tryouts for new soccer club
These are the tryout and assessment dates for the new club. For U/12 and below you need to try and make one of the assessment dates. The academy structure brings all kids in and develops them at their ability level. The U/13 and above players really need to be at 2 of the four dates, Of course the more times you show up the better chance you have of making a good impression. We are hoping to have enough players in the U13/U14 group to have several teams and possibly an academy also. If you can not make tryouts please register at http://www.sportssignup.com/region-alliance.start If you have any questions please call or contact me at 423-791-0314 or greghop@chartertn.net

New Regional Club
Information Release

In the summer of 2007, several Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia soccer clubs, dissatisfied with the current situation, began discussions on how to improve the playing experience for their members. It quickly became apparent that the best way was to combine their resources into a single, region-wide club which would operate the competitive teams and assist each community with its recreational programs. Today we are happy to announce that the clubs have agreed in principle to this ambitious goal. A new regional alliance will begin operation in the summer of 2008. The clubs involved are:

·   Highlands Soccer Club (Abingdon)
·   Bristol Soccer Association
·   Sullivan County Soccer Association (SCOSA)
·   Elizabethan Soccer Association
·   Impact Nike NE

The organization will have the mission of developing the game of soccer in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. We believe that this can best be done by (1) changing the emphasis to individual player development, (2) consolidating the resources of the current soccer organizations, and (3) preserving existing clubs’ control of recreational programs.

A steering committee of representatives from each club has been given the task of creating the new alliance. Over the next few weeks, the steering committee, led by Declan Jogi, will form additional committees to work on specific tasks. As always, “the devil is in the details”, and the steering committee understands that meeting the needs of our diverse clubs and communities presents many challenges. Please be thinking about your strengths and how you can best contribute to this new endeavor.

Visit our temporary website, www.region-alliance.com, for more information. We will attempt to provide regular status updates.

Thank you.

The Regional Association Steering Committee

Matt Lavinder, Head Coach, Men’s Soccer, King College, and Director of Operations, Impact Nike NE
Gil Graham, President, Bristol Soccer Association
Greg Hopkins, President, Sullivan County Soccer Association
Ken Gough, President, Elizabethton Soccer Association
Chad Craft, Director of Competitive Program, Highlands Soccer Association
Declan Jogi, Director of Coaching & Player Development, Impact Nike NE
