• RECREATIONAL BASEBALL (Ages 5-10)
You may be playing now in a spring league such as in Prospect Park or in Bay Ridge -- but do they play this summer? Chances are, the answer is no. So the SBBL is pleased to offer summer baseball so that your kids can play all summer long!
Until now, the only leagues usually available for playing baseball in the summer were competitive travel leagues. Recreational leagues -- for fun -- usually only operate in the spring season. But this year, we bring FUN baseball to the summer months too!
We offer you two options:
ONE: Individual players can sign up and we will assign them to teams. It makes no difference if you play for another organization right now in the spring. The summer is a different season. Fee: $75 (includes uniforms and umpire fees).
TWO: We are accepting existing teams from other organizations, so if your spring team wants to continue playing, and your organization will sponsor you, you can keep your team together just as you have it now--and play more ball this summer! Fee: $400 (includes all umpire fees)
There will be 8 games during the summer season, July 7-August 28. All games will be played at DiMattina Field or Van Voorhees Field.
Want to play mostly weeknights because you go away on weekends? We can arrange that. Want to play mostly weekends because your kids are in camp during the week and you can't get to evening games? We can arrange that too!
This is a summer league for ALL PLAYERS, to PLAY BASEBALL and HAVE FUN!
Age divisions are 5-6 (Pee Wee), 7-8 (Pony), and 9-10 (Cub).
[We may also run an 11-12s division if there is enough interest. Let us know if you are!]
• PONY BASEBALL CLINIC (Ages 6-8)
If you are interested in improving your baseball skills, or you are just starting in the sport at these ages, and your schedule does not support your being on a team, then the Pony Clinic is the place for you.
We serve two main groups: (1) players just starting to play baseball at ages 6-8; (2) players who have been playing since they were younger but who want to raise their game to a higher level.
Our Clinic is designed to address both needs. We teach players more sophsticated skills such as making double plays, bunting, outfield relays, stealing bases, etc.
We meet each Sunday afternoon, starting July 8.
• INSTRUCTIONAL DIVISION (4-5 year olds)
For 4-year-olds and young 5s just starting out and not ready quite yet to play on a team, our very popular Instructional Division leads young ballplayers through the basics of the game--throwing, fielding, batting, and running. We take a very gentle approach and try to make it a lot of fun.
Our aim is to bring these young kids from knowing basically nothing to being ready to play on a team.
We do play practice games toward the end of the session, but our primary goal is to get the kids off on the right foot as they start off in the sport.
• T-BALL FOR TOTS (2-3 year olds)
Many families with players in our Instructional Division have asked us to start a program for younger siblings, so we are pleased this year to offer a t-ball program for these very young kids.
We will meet for a shorter time than the older kids, and the emphasis will be more on batting than on most other skills. But we think there is something to be gained from learning along with other players so that when they do move up to Instructional and then to teams, they will be used to the team format.
• TRAVEL BASEBALL (Ages 7-16)
Our new DUKES TRAVEL BASEBALL CLUB program offers players looking for a higher level of play the chance to play amongst other similarly minded players in the premier travel leagues of Brooklyn. In the past, we have placed teams in the Brooklyn Baseball League (BBL), New York Travel Baseball (NYTB), and the Parade Grounds League (PGL). Our teams have reached the championship game level in all three leagues.
We offer both summer (July-August) and fall (September-October) seasons.
If you think you have the right stuff, come play with the best baseball players in Brooklyn (joined by good players from Queens and Staten Island too)!
Travel ball requires a serious time commitment, with a couple of games per week in addition to a couple of practices each week, meaning each week the kids are out there practicing or playing 3-5 days. But the rewards are playing amongst other talented players and getting the chance to improve one's game and play at a higher level by applying oneself to the game on a regular basis, not just once per week.
If this is the baseball life for you, let us know!
COACHES: We always need travel coaches, so if you're looking to coach through the summer or fall seasons, whether you have coached at this level before or you are just looking to get started, please contact us. The kids need you!
Tryouts for teams will be held at DiMattina Field (in Carroll Gardens) as follows. Mark your calendars!
8U Tuesday, June 26, 5:00-8:00 pm
10U Saturday, June 23, 1:00-4:00 pm and Sunday June 24, 1:00-4:00 pm
12U Monday, June 25, 5:00-8:00 pm
We also will have 14U and 16U teams, For more information, please let us know you are interested and we will let you know when and where the tryouts will be held. These are still bring planned.
• SUMMER SOFTBALL FOR GIRLS (Ages 8-16)
If you play softball now in the spring, or are interested in playing but could not swing it this spring because of school or because you were playing soccer, come join us this summer for some softball fun!
The season will run July 7-August 26, for a total of 8 games, all at DiMattina Field or Van Voorhees Field.
Our fall softball league is a big success, with 17 teams last season from Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. So this year we are expanding the league for girls to include the summer months.
Players may sign up individually to be placed on a team, or existing teams from other organizations are also welcome to join us. The more the merrier! We really like it when we get a mix of girls and teams from many different neighborhoods and boroughs. That is what Brooklyn is all about!
So, whether you are just starting out in the game or you play already on a team in a league or at school, please come join us this summer. We are going to have a LOT OF FUN!
[Individual players - $75 (includes uniform and umpire fees). Outside teams - $400 (assumes you supply uniforms; includes all umpire fees)]
• SOFTBALL PITCHING CLINIC -- with pitching sensation, Vicky Capozucca!
Quick! Name a New York City high school softball pitcher who started on her Varsity softball team in 8th grade and went on with her team to win FIVE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in a row, including pitching shutouts, no-hitters, and even a couple of perfect games!
There is only one Victoria Capozucca, who is now a sophomore at Catholic University, in Washington, DC.
Vicky will be leading a Tuesday night clinic all summer for girls who would like to take their softball pitching to a higher level.
So, whether you are new to softball pitching, or you pitch now but want to learn how to master windmill style and increase your power and accuracy, plus add some new pitches beyond your fast ball, join us for this exceptional 9-week program!
By the end of the summer -- just in time to come play in our fall softball league! -- your softball pitching will be head and shoulders above the rest.
The Softball Pitching Clinic will be held at DiMattina Field on Tuesday nights, June 19-August 21. The fee for all 9 sessions is just $150!
5:00-6:00 pm Ages 8-10
6:00-7:00 pm Ages 11-14
[If you are ages 15-16 and are interested in the pitching clinic as well, please drop us a line and let us know. If there is enough interest, we will schedule another slot.]
• SUMMER FLAG FOOTBALL (Boys & Girls, Ages 5-10)
We are pleased to announce a NEW summer program to introduce young players to the FAST, FUN, and SAFE sport of flag football. Our teams usually play in the Prospect Park league in the fall, and we will again this year, but during the summer we will be running an introductory league of our own to teach younger players, ages 5-10, the fundamentals of the game, so that they will be better prepared when they are old enough to join the regular league, which is usually at age 9.
The aim of the summer program is to teach the kids the basics, and to let them have a lot of fun in the process.
The program is open to both boys and girls. It will run July 7-August 26. The fee will be $75.
• FALL FLAG FOOTBALL - In Prospect Park
You Need to REGISTER EARLY to Not Get Closed Out!
The summer hasn't even started yet, so why are we mentioning flag football for the fall? Because the Prospect Park league closes out its registration in mid-July! So if you wait until the summer to register, guess what? You won't be able to play!
So, you need to think ahead and get your registration in EARLY! Ideally, you will send it in during June.
All registration forms must be received by us by JULY 15! Anything received after that date may be subject to being rejected by the league. So please don't risk that! PLEASE REGISTER EARLY!
The fall season runs mid-September through mid-November, with games just on the weekends (no weeknight games).
Teams are open in the following age divisions:
Ages 7-8 Coed
Ages 9-11 Coed
Ages 12-14 Boys only
Ages 12-14 Girls only
Ages 15-17 Boys only
If there are any questions about any of these programs, please email me at spisano1@nyc.rr.com.
More information, as well as registration forms, will be be posted on our website on Sunday, May 27, so please check the website then.
We look forward to seeing you this summer!
Thank you.
