Shelby vs Autauga

Shelby went to Autauga bent on improving their seeding in the 2A playoffs. Autauga took the initial kickoff, but Shelby held and Autauga punted. Chad King fumbled the punt on the Shelby 22 yard line and Autauga recovered. They capitalized on the turnover and scored with a single 22 yard pass play. The PAT was not good. Score Shelby 0 Autauga 6.
King returned the ensuing kickoff 19 yards and Shelby began their first drive from the 42 yard line. Eight plays later, the ball returned to Autauga on downs. Three plays later Autauga punted to Shelby, with no return. Shelby began their possession on the 28 yard line. Again, Shelby could not move the ball successfully and punted to Autauga. After a negative yardage tackle by McDaniel and an incomplete pass, Bobby Sexton picked off an Autauga pass and returned the ball 25 yards for Shelby’s first touchdown. Jordan Ikner converted the PAT. Score Shelby 7 Autauga 6
Autuaga’s next possession carried over into the second quarter of football, but they could not capitalize. Their punt gave Shelby a possession beginning at the 29 yard line. The possession was good for 10 plays, but Shelby could not get into the endzone. One fourth down, Ikner hit a 38 yard field goal to add to Shelby’s lead. Score Shelby 10 Autauga 6
Autauga converted one first down, but a sack by Jacob Lumpkin resulted in a punt. Shelby took the ball on the 45 yard line and quickly returned the ball on downs. Autauga capitalized on the opportunity to score their second TD of the evening. Their two point conversion was no good. Score Shelby 10 Autauga 12
Autauga’s kickoff to Shelby ended the first half.
Autauga kicked off to Shelby to begin the second half. Reggie Taylor returned the kickoff 24 yards to the Shelby 48. Brandon Horton took the hand off and streaked 52 yards for a Raider touchdown. Ikner added the PAT. Score Shelby 17 Autauga 12
Autauga took their initial kickoff of the second half and mounted a drive to score. They again tried the 2 point conversion and failed. Score Shelby 17 Autauga 18
Shelby’s second possession began on the 47 yard line after King returned the kickoff 22 yards. On the second play from scrimmage, King completed a pass to Horton good for 53 yards and a touchdown. Horton ran for the 2 point conversion. Score Shelby 25 Autauga 18
Autauga again went on offense. Attempting to convert the second first down of the drive, the QB went back for a long pass. A hit by McDaniel caused the ball to float and Horton grabbed the pass and returned it 73 yards for another Raider touchdown. Ikner added the PAT. Score Shelby 32 Autauga 18
As the game entered the fourth quarter, Autauga again went on offense, but could not move the ball and returned the ball to Shelby via punt. Shelby took the ball on their own 32 and mounted a clock burning drive of 11 plays that ended when Colton Wingard entered the endzone on a two yard run. Ikner added the PAT. Autauga and Shelby each had two offensive possessions, but the scoring was over. The victory cemented the third seed for Shelby and placed Autauga as fourth seed in the upcoming state playoffs.

Homecoming has traditionally been reserved to honor alumni and highlight the current year’s seniors. Shelby tried to honor that tradition by honoring the previous two State Championship Teams of 1998 and 2006 at halftime of this Homecoming game. One out of two ain’t bad.
Evangel received the opening kickoff of the game. After fumbling the initial snap, they could not convert the first down and punted to Shelby. Shelby had a six play offensive series that ended with an interception of a Jones to King pass. On their third play of the second offensive series, Evangel lost their first fumble, which was recovered by Lee Parsons to start Shelby’s second series. Shelby took the ball at the 12 yard line and Chad King scored on a 4 yard run, the second in the series. A high snap on the PAT was fielded by Cody Jones and carried into the end zone for a 2 pt conversion.

Evangel again could not sustain a drive and Shelby got the ball back on the Evangel 47 yard line. A fumble by King on the initial play was recovered by Chase Cleveland. Two plays later, King scampered 30 yards for the TD. Jordan Ikner added the PAT,

Again Evangel’s offensive possession was cut short by another fumble, recovered by Chase Cleveland. Shelby took possession on the Evangel 21. Two plays later King carried the ball into the end zone on a 19 yard run. Ikner’s PAT completed the play. Score Shelby 29 Evangel 0
Evangel took the kickoff and put together a sustained drive for their first touchdown of the evening. They added the two point conversion to make the score Shelby 29 Evangel 8
Evangel tried an on side kick, and successfully recovered the ball. They sustained a second offensive drive until Nathan Herrington intercepted an Evangel pass in the end zone. Shelby took the ball at the Shelby 20 yard line and scored in two plays. Ikner’s PAT was blocked. Score Shelby 35 Evangel 8
The half ended with Evangel on offensive.
The second half began with Shelby on offense. Their scoring drive was good for seven plays and ended with a 23 yard pass from King to Horton for a touchdown. Ikner added the PAT. Score Shelby 42 Evangel 8
Evangel’s first possession of the second half was good for seven plays and ended with a punt. Shelby took possession and immediately fumbled. Evangel recovered the ball and went back on offensive. However, their drive was short lived an Evangel fumble was recovered by Colton Wingard for Shelby. Shelby could not convert the first down. Ikner was called upon to attempt a field goal. The kick was good for a 40 yard field goal. Score Shelby 45 Evangel 8
Evangel next offensive possession was good for 12 plays before they were forced to punt. Shelby took possession on the 37 yard line. 10 plays later, King punted and Evangel got the ball on their 45 yard line. They immediately scored their final touchdown of the evening. Shelby took the ensuing kickoff and kept the ball on the ground run out the clock. The ball was returned to Evangel on downs. A fumble caused by Horton and Parsons was recovered by Horton. Shelby took a knee twice to run out the clock. Final Score:

Shelby began their first possession on the 41 yard line following a 47 yard return by Chad King. However, 5 plays and 2 penalties later, Shelby returned the ball to Pike via punt. Shelby’s defense held strong and took possession of the ball on downs. On second play from scrimmage, a fumble by Chase Cleveland was recovered by Pike and returned for a TD. The PAT was no good. Score Pike 13 Shelby 0.
Shelby’s third possession began on the Shelby 23 yard line. On the third play from scrimmage, a Cody Jones pass was intercepted. Two plays later, Pike again capitalized on a Shelby turnover and scored. PAT was good. Score Pike 20 Shelby 0.
Shelby began their next drive from the 25 yard line. They could not convert the first down and punted to Pike. Pike fumbled to begin the second quarter and King recovered the ball to set up Shelby’s next possession. Pike took possession of the ball and drove to Shelby territory, where the Shelby defensive made a stop. A bad snap on the Pike punt was recovered by Daniel Michael. Again Shelby could not generate any offense and the ball went back to Pike on downs. Half-time score Pike 26 Shelby 0.
Shelby took the opening kick-off of the second half. They could not convert the first down and punted. Pike took the punt and scored on two plays. The PAT was good. Score Pike 33 Shelby 0.
Shelby second possession of the second half ended on a Jones interception. Pike took the ball and mounted a ground drive that burned up a lot of clock. The ball came back to Shelby on downs at the Shelby 1 yard line. Again Shelby was forced to punt, and Pike mounted a clock burning ground drive. Again the ball returned to Shelby on downs at the Shelby 13 yard line. Again, Shelby could not convert a first down and punted. Shelby’s defense held and the ball returned to Shelby when Michael read the fake punt and stopped the ball on the 49 yard line. Shelby then mounted their only scoring drive against Pike’s second string defense. The drive was good for 5 plays and 51 yards and ended the game. Score Pike 33 Shelby 6.

Shelby got back to winning in a very sloppy game against Springwood Academy. There were 7 turnovers between the two teams. Shelby began the game on offense from their 26 yard line. Three plays later they punted from the 17. The second play from scrimmage, Springwood got a break when Brandon Horton fumbled the ball and Springwood recovered. Three plays later, Springwood entered the end zone for a score. The kick was blocked. Score Springwood 7 Shelby 0.
Following the kick-off, Shelby punted following three plays. A miss handled punt resulted in Hunter Winslett recovering a fumble putting Shelby back to work on the Springwood 32 yard line. Nine plays later, Jason McDaniel took the ball into the end zone from one yard out. Jordan Ikner added the PAT. Score Shelby 7 Springwood 6.
Springwood took the kick-off and punted following three plays. Shelby took the ball at their 44 yard line following a 12 yard return by Chad King, but returned it to Springwood three plays later on a Cody Jones fumble. Shelby managed to hold Springwood and forced a punt beginning a Shelby drive that began at the 22 yard line. Ten plays later Jason McDaniel scored on a three yard scamper, set up by a 56 yard run by Brandon Horton. Ikner added the PAT. Score Shelby 15 Springwood 6.
Springwood again the kick-off and began their drive. The drive had an untimely end when Horton recovered a Springwood fumble on 41 yard line. Unfortunately, Jones returned the favor by throwing his one interception of the game. Halftime Score:

Springwood received the opening kick-off of the second half. Their opening drive was cut short by a Cody Jones interception with one yard return. However, Shelby could not convert and turned the ball over on downs (boy that was a bad spot!). Springwood’s next drive would be cut short by a fumble, recovered by Colton Wingard on the Shelby 18 yard line. Shelby could not sustain a drive and punted to Springwood. Springwood returned the favor setting Shelby up at the 15 yard line. One the third snap, Jones fumbled and Springwood recovered setting up their second touchdown of the evening. The two point conversion was no good. Score Shelby 14 Springwood 12.

Shelby began their contest against Lowndes Academy flat and never recovered. Lowndes took the opening kickoff and after 5 plays were forced to punt. Shelby mounted their first drive from their own 20 yard line. When the drive stalled, a roughing the kicker penalty put the Raiders back in business. When the drive stalled a second time, kicker Jordan Ikner was brought in to try a field goal. However, the attempt was blocked returning the ball to Lowndes.
Lowndes took advantage of the miss to mount their first scoring drive. They missed the extra point, however which made the score Shelby 0 Lowndes 6. Following one first down Shelby was forced to punt again. Lowndes was held and punted as well. Again Shelby could not get a first down and punted to Lowndes. Lowndes mounted their second scoring drive, tried a two point conversion following the score and extended their lead to 12-0. The ball was swapped back and forth several times, and half time the score remained Shelby 0 Lowndes Academy 12.
Shelby took kickoff to start the second half. They punted following seven plays. Lowndes was also forced to punt on their first possession of the second half. On the first play of the second series, a botched handoff resulted in a fumble which Lowndes recovered. Lowndes took advantage of the fumble scoring their third TD of the game. They were successful in their 2 point conversion attempt making the score 20-0.
On the ensuing kickoff a fumbled reception resulted in a Lowndes recovery. However, Shelby’s defense stepped up and took possession of the ball on downs. Three plays later, Shelby faked the punt for a first down. However, an interception of a Cody Jones pass put an end to the Raider drive. Again the defense held and Lowndes had to punt. On the first play following the punt, a botched exchange resulted in another fumble which was recovered by Aaron Buff. In the long yardage situation, Jones had another pass picked off to give Lowndes excellent field position. Lowndes scored their final touchdown of the day and converted the PAT to make the score 27-0.
Shelby completed the game on offense, but could not muster the necessary yardage to get to the end zone. Shelby finished the night with 3 fumbles (1 lost) and 2 interceptions. Final Score Shelby 0 Lowndes 27.

Shelby lost their first game of the season against a much more prepared Edgewood Academy team. Edgewood took the opening kick-off and drove the length of the field for their initial touchdown. Score Shelby 0 Edgewood 7.
Shelby’s first possession began badly with an illegal procedure call on the first play. Although they converted the first down, the drive stalled and Shelby punted. Edgewood scored quickly on two plays. Score Shelby 0 Edgewood 14. The second quarter saw Edgewood score a third touchdown, while Shelby could not score on two possessions. On a positive note, Shelby ended one Edgewood drive with an interception by Chad King, and held Edgewood on downs as the first half ended. Halftime score Shelby 0 Edgewood 21.
The second half began with more of the same. Shelby stalled after receiving the kickoff. Following the punt, Edgewood scored their final TD of the evening. Score Shelby 0 Edgewood 28.
On the ensuing kickoff, Shelby finally put together a scoring drive. The drive was good for 75 yards on 5 plays ending with a 33 yard run by Brandon Horton. Jordan Ikner added the point after. Score Shelby 7 Edgewood 28.
Edgewood’s next drive ended when Jason McDaniel stripped the ball from the Edgewood runner and Austin Shelton covered the loose ball. However a 15 yard penalty stalled the drive and Shelby returned the ball on downs. Again Shelby’s defense held, and Edgewood turned the ball over on downs with a fake punt. Shelby mounted their last drive which looked very productive and included a 46 yard pass play from Cody Jones to Horton. However, a 20+ yard penalty deep in Edgewood territory ended the drive as Shelby turned the ball over on downs once again. Edgewood ran out the clock to end the game with a score of Shelby 7 Edgewood 28

Shelby vs Lakeside

The kickoff was reminiscent of the Shelby-Cornerstone kickoff, with Shelby on the receiving end of the TD. Chad King took the opening kickoff 85 yards for Shelby’s first score. The PAT by Jordan Ikner was good. With only seconds off the clock, the score was Shelby 7 Lakeside 0. Shelby never looked back.
Lakeside could not penetrate Shelby’s defense and punted to begin Shelby’s second drive from the Raider 14 yard line. Seven plays and 86 yards later, Jason McDaniel scampered for 27 yards into the end zone for a second Raider TD. Ikner added the PAT and the score became 14-0. Lakeside punted after failing to score, and Shelby returned the favor.
Lakeside mounted a sustained drive that ended when the ball went over on downs at the Raider 15 yard line. Three plays later, Shelby returned to ball to Lakeside with a fumble. Shelby’s defense remained tough and got the ball back on downs, this time on the Raider 21 yard line. Shelby took the ball on offense and had entered Chief territory and lost the ball on another fumble. Shelby quickly took the offense again with an interception by Keaton Wood. Shelby’s last threat of the first half came to an end with another Raider fumble. Thankfully, half-time ended the pain!
Lakeside took the opening kickoff of the second half and again could not score. Following their punt, Shelby got their act together offensively and mounted a 62 yard scoring drive in 10 plays culminated by a three yard dash by Brandon Horton. Ikner added the PAT. Score Shelby 21 Lakeside 0.
Following the kickoff, Lakeside again failed to convert the first down. A bad snap over the punter’s head put the ball in the end zone where Daniel Michael covered it for a Raider TD. Ikner again added the PAT. Score Shelby 28 Lakeside 0.
Ikner’s kickoff went through the end zone and Lakeside took possession on their 20 yard line. Lakeside could not make a first down and following a successful punt Shelby took the ball on the Lakeside 48 yard line. Five plays later Chad King scored from 10 yards out. Lakeside got on the board when they returned the kickoff for a touchdown. They missed the PAT making the score Shelby 34 Lakeside 6.
Lakeside kicked off and Shelby began their next drive from the 42 yard line. The drive stalled when a Cody Jones pass was intercepted by Lakeside. However, two plays later McDaniel tackled the Lakeside ball carried in the end zone for a safety. Score Shelby 36 Lakeside 6. Horton returned the free kick following the safety 25 yards to set up Shelby’s final score. On fourth down, Horton took the ball into the end zone from 37 yards out. Verner added the PAT. Score Shelby 43 Lakeside 6.

Shelby vs Cornerstone

Shelby delivered their personal justice against Cornerstone this evening, although it initially appeared it could be a long night. Cornerstone took the initial kickoff and returned it for a Cornerstone touchdown and would take their only lead of the game. After a squib kickoff by Cornerstone, Shelby tied the score (6-6) on a 52 yard run by Jason McDaniel on Shelby’s first offensive play of the game. From that point on, Shelby never looked back.
Cornerstone took the kickoff, and punted following three offensive plays. Shelby took the ball on their 15 yard line. On the second offensive play, Brandon Horton streaked 90 yards for another Shelby TD. The PAT was no good. Score 12-6.
Shelby again kicked off to Cornerstone. A hard hit by Chase Cleveland gave Nathan Herrington the opportunity to recover a CCS fumble. Taking the ball on the CCS 30 yard line, eight plays, including two penalties against SA, McDaniel again found the end zone on a nine yard scamper. The PAT by Jordan Ikner was good. Score 19-6.
Again CCS stalled after three offensive plays. A bad snap on the punt resulted in a safety as the CCS kicker recovered the ball in the end zone. Score 21-6. The free kick to SA was returned by Reggie Taylor 17 yards setting up the next offensive series on the SA 44 yard line. Three plays later, Horton streaked for 25 yards for his second TD of the night. The PAT was good by Ikner. Score 28-6.
Cornerstones next series saw the end of the 1st quarter of play. They punted in the second quarter. Chad King returned the ball 13 yards to set up SA’s next offensive series. Six plays and 77 yards later, Daniel Michael took the ball into the end zone from the 11 yard line. The PAT by Ikner was good. Score 35-6.
On Shelby next defensive series, Cleveland recovered a CCS fumble on the SA 42 yard line. Shelby’s second team could not convert the first down, and Chad King punted to CCS after three offensive plays. CCS maintained possession of the ball until half-time. Score at the half SA 35 Cornerstone 6.
Shelby took the ball on the initial possession of the second half and punted following three plays. CCS returned the favor following three offensive plays of their own Selby’s next series began on their own 32 yard line. It culminated following eight plays on a 14 yard TD run by McDaniel. Ikner’s PAT was good. Score 42-6.
CCS could not get a first down during their next possession and punted. SA again scored on their first play of the drive on a 30 yard dash by Chad King. Ikner’s PAT was good. Score 49-6. With a commanding lead, SA allowed the second string offense and defense to play the remainder of the game.
CCS punted on their next series and the fourth quarter ended during SA’s offensive possession. CCS managed to punch in two TD’s while SA punted twice to end the game. The game final was Shelby 49 Cornerstone 18.

After stopping Kingwood on their initial possession, Shelby ran seven plays and returned the ball to Kingwood on their second fumble of the series. The defense held strong and Shelby began their second possession. The second series was good for 10 plays and culminated with a one yard TD run by Jason McDaniel. Jordan Ikner added the PAT. Shelby’s defense again held Kingwood so that Shelby began their third possession on our own 40 yard line. The third series was good for 7 plays and ended with a three yard TD run by Brandon Horton. Ikner again added the PAT. Score 14-0
Again, the defense held Kingwood scoreless. On their final possession of the half, Shelby ran two rushing plays to run out the clock.

Shelby began their second half of football on an offensive possession beginning on their own 30 yard line. On the second play from scrimmage a pass from Cody Jones to Austin Shelton was picked off by Restoration. The interception was returned deep into Raider territory and ultimately resulted in a Restoration TD. A 2 pt conversion was good. Score Shelby 0, Restoration 8.
On the Raiders second possession, they drove the ball deep into Restoration territory. Six plays and two fumbles later, Restoration took over the ball and began a drive of their own.
