Looking To Bounce Back
The Horns look to bounce back after a tough 1 point loss to the Bandits in Week 1, losing 18-19. Defensive POY, Steve Navarro had 5 interceptions but the offense failed to capitalize. However, WR Chris Estala had a very solid game in his first game as a Horn. This week, they face a Ruff Ryder team who saw their starting QB go down last week. While the Ruff Ryders lost 6-7, they are still a dangerous team. This is the marquee game that everyone has been waiting for and there is bad blood between both teams. Several Ryder players were at one time part of the Horns. Kick off is set for approx 2:30 p.m. at Winston Stadium at 8565 Ewing Halsell Dr. Tickets are $3.00 at the gate. Let's Go Horns!

- Ernie Holmes, member of 'Steel Curtain', dies at 59 Associated Press-

Updated: January 18, 2008, 2:22 PM ET

DALLAS -- Ernie Holmes, who won two Super Bowls as an anchor of Pittsburgh's famed "Steel Curtain" defense in the 1970s, died in a car crash. He was 59. Ernie Holmes is pictured in New Orleans on Jan. 8, 1975, as the Steelers prepared for Super Bowl IX against the Vikings. "This is the way Tarkenton will see me Sunday," Holmes said that day. Holmes was driving alone Thursday night when his car left the road and rolled several times near Lumberton, about 80 miles from Houston, a Texas Department of Public Safety dispatcher said Friday. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, and pronounced dead at the scene, the department said. Holmes, an ordained minister, lived on a ranch in Wiergate. His death was first reported by Beaumont TV station KFDM. The two-time All-Pro played for the Steelers from 1972-77 and spent part of the 1978 season with New England before retiring. He played on a defensive line with Steel Curtain teammates "Mean" Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood and Dwight White.

Book reportedly says Walker suffered from multiple personality disorder

ATLANTA -- Herschel Walker will reveal that he has multiple personality disorder in a book scheduled for an August release, according to a story in Friday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A publicist at Simon & Schuster, which is publishing the book, said that "Breaking Free" will cover Walker's life with the disorder, the paper reported. Shida Carr offered no other details and would not give the Journal-Constitution an excerpt, according to the report. Multiple personality disorder is also commonly known as dissociative identity disorder (DID). Walker won a Heisman Trophy for the University of Georgia in 1982. He was third on ESPN's list of the greatest college football players ever, unveiled this year.

Golfweek cover featuring noose raises ire of PGA Tour commissioner

ESPN.com news services

Updated: January 17, 2008, 5:08 PM ET

Does Golfweek's Noose Cover Cross the Line?

Golfweek Magazine, as part of a package of stories on the controversy involving Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman's comment that players should "lynch [Tiger Woods] in a back alley," used the image of a noose on the cover of its Jan. 19 issue.

That decision has added fuel to a flap which has seen Tilghman suspended for two weeks from her anchoring duties. Woods' agent said he considers Tilghman's remark a "non-issue."

Golfweek is one of two major national golf news magazines. Golf World, which has an editorial relationship with ESPN.com, is the other.

"Was it an arresting image? "Yes, it was," Golfweek editor Dave Seanor told USA Today. "We chose it because it was an image we thought would draw attention to an issue we thought deserved some intelligent dialogue." "There was a great deal of debate over it," Seanor said of the magazine's in-house deliberations, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "But it was the news of the week, no question about it. That's what everybody in the game is talking about."

In the magazine's news story, noted sociologist Harry Edwards, said the public should accept Tilghman's apology.

"If we stopped the train every time somebody made a dumb remark that is potentially offensive," he is quoted as saying, "we'd never progress as a society"

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, in a statement, said: "Clearly, what Kelly said was inappropriate and unfortunate and she obviously regrets her choice of words. But we consider Golfweek's imagery of a swinging noose on its cover to be outrageous and irresponsible. It smacks of tabloid journalism. It was a naked attempt to inflame and keep alive an incident that was heading to an appropriate conclusion."

During Golf Channel's Jan. 4 telecast of the Mercedes-Benz Championship, Tilghman was in a conversation with analyst Nick Faldo about how PGA Tour players could stop Woods' dominance when she used the phrase about lynching. Golf Channel received few complaints at the time. Tilghman apologized personally to Woods and on the telecast two days later.

"Outside the Lines," (ESPN, 3:30 p.m. ET) examines Golfweek magazine's decision to put such a controversial image on its cover. OTL

Rev. Al Sharpton, in an interview on CNN on Jan. 9, called for Tilghman to be fired. Later that night, Tilghman was suspended prior to the Sony Open in Hawaii. She is also missing this week's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. She is scheduled to return for the Buick Invitational, which ironically is Woods' first scheduled appearance of the year on the PGA Tour.

In an editorial in the magazine, the editors wrote: "Like it or not, Tilghman's 'Lynch him in a back alley' remark about Tiger Woods was national news. The debate about the severity of her punishment -- at this writing a two-week suspension -- fueled heated debate on Web sites, in newspapers and on national TV. The furor begs rational analysis."

Prior to Tilghman's suspension,Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, said, "it is a complete non-issue. Kelly and Tiger are friends. It might have been a poor choice of words, but there was absolutely no ill intent whatsoever."

Tilghman issued her own statement, saying she "used some poorly chosen words. I have known Tiger for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him. I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended."

A Look Ahead at Week 1

By Dontay Evans

Wolverines vs. Storm- 8:30 a.m.: The match up features two teams that struggled mightily last season. For the Wolverines to make it in the tough Southern Conference, they will have to find a playmaker. Something this team has not had in many years. As for the Storm, (formerly the Bucs) well they should try to finish the season first. Once this team had reached conference play last season, they didn’t have a team. Look for this game to be hard fought between two mediocre teams.

Prediction: Wolverines by 6

Jets vs. Bulldawgs- 10:00 a.m.: After a one year hiatus, the Jets will try to jump back into the TSFA mix this season. Nobody has really seen what the Jets look like this season so teams won’t have a feel for them for a few weeks into the season. The Bulldawgs looked very good last year playing in the tough Southern Conference. The knock against the Dawgs was their youth and inexperience. Now that they have a year under their belt, expect this team be the dark horse to make the playoffs. As for this game, this should be an easy game for the Bulldawgs; however if they come half stepping, the Jets could pull off the upset.

Prediction: Dawgs by 20

Revolution vs. Panthers- 11:30 a.m.: The Panthers enter this season looking to get over the hump. What hump you ask? Well, just as the Longhorns have been knocked out the playoffs by the Bandits over the past few years, the Panthers have been knocked out by the Horns the past 2 years. This is a talented team but self imploded in the 1st round. The Revolution is a rage team reincarnated. Nobody really knows what their team will look like but with a veteran staff, I’m pretty sure they will make some noise in the North. This will be a hard fought game and is up for grabs.

Prediction: Revolution by 1

Eye Catcher: Rhinos vs. Bandits- 1:00 p.m.: The Rhinos will look to rebound this season after losing once again in the first round last season. They still have a strong defensive team and not to mention a lot of depth. They will still have to overcome struggles against the Ruff Ryders and Wrecking Crew if they want to make it to the Epler Cup. But first, they must take care of the high octane but questionable Bandits. There has been much speculation on who will be on the Bandit’s roster this season. Who’s there and who’s not? I guess we will have to wait another week until rosters are revealed league wide.

Prediction: Rhinos by 6

Game of the Week: Longhorns vs. Ruff Ryders- 2:30 p.m.: The Longhorns are coming off another strong but disappointing season. After losing once again to the Bandits in the Northern Conference Championship, the Horns look to claim the North once again. They have upgraded their offense to go along with a steady defense. On the other hand, the Ruff Ryders look to show the league they can win without QB Scott Kissee and RB Raynald Ray. They still have veterans such as Eddie Flores, Shaun Battles and a quick footed QB. There has been much jawing on the message board the past few weeks. Just to give you an example of how much people have been anticipating the game, it has already exceeded 19,500 views and over 63 replies. The match up to keep an eye on is DE/CB Dontay Evans of the Longhorns and RB/LB Shaun Battles of the Ruff Ryders. Who will prevail? Old school Horns of the now Ruff Ryders or new school Horns? This is one game you can’t miss.

Prediction: Horns by 6 in OT

Phoenix vs. Hit Squad- 4:00 p.m.: The Phoenix will look to come stronger than they did last season winning only one game. They have gotten much younger and have much more speed than what was displayed last year. Coach Matthews is hoping new acquired RB Shawn Herron will be able to provide some much needed offense this team has been lacking. They will need as much offense as possible; that is because the newly formed (or born again) Hit Squad is loaded. Just before the start of the season, the OG Bandits and Hurricanes merged to form Hit Squad. How will these two teams gel during the season? What about playing time? Who will be calling the shots? All these questions are sure to be answered the first few weeks of the season. The veteran leadership of the Hit Squad should be enough for an easy victory over the Phoenix.

Prediction: Hit Squad by 16

Battles: I'm not 40 yet and the funny thing is I may have lost a step but I'm still 3 steps in front of u!!! Vicious hits I hope you're joking you don't weigh but 5 pounds more than my lil girl that's real talk. I'm healthy now and we'll see what the outcome is although deep down inside we both know stop lying to yourself its a joke you don't even belong on the same field as me and you know it feel privledged lil homie

Tay: Ya know, you just might be three steps ahead of me seeing how you spotted in the scooter store recently! 5 lbs? Yeah didn't you mean that's the size of your head? You get ya wish the second week of the season but let me tell you, you like a donkey in my horse race, I'll beat that ass. And my team is like an out of order toilet cause we ain't takin no s**t! If you would shut your mouth sometimes and just play maybe people would respect you just a tad bit more. But all you do is hate on folks. You know what I do to haterz on the field? I get in they ass like a small thong in a fat hoe! You ain't tryna see me! and this whole black superman thing is played. come dawg, stop trying to be your favorite superhero. You're damn near 40. Be a little more original!

Battles: Are u serious u are like 87.5 lbs soaking wet with combat boots on lil homie. See you man please I get nothing but respect don't play the hate on folks card thats girl talk. You are lightweight who are u again anyway oh yeah that's right Pam Oliver!!!! You are a joke always have been you couldn't see me with binoculars like I said feel privledged to be on the same field cause if were playing in any ther league you wouldn't even qualify!!! Week 2 I'll be there you make sure you are and please have some help cause you are trash!!!

Tay: You sit there and call yourself the black superman?

When I look at you, all I see is the Klu Klux Klan

And just like them all you ever do is talk

Talking a lot of smack when you know ya game is lame

Watching you on the field ain’t worth a Kodak frame

If you can’t comprehend or just don’t get the picture

You like a Bobby Petrino and I’m a Mike Ditka

If you wanna go to war, ok then we can do this

You can just call me Tay A.K.A Ray Lewis

And I can’t help the fact,I’m getting a college degree

While you stuck at St. Philips on your GED

Let me stop now cause this dude is done

Come week 2, Imma leave ya a** stunned

Battles: LOL!! You are very funny, I look forward to reading your lil sh*t talking everyday, problem is you are just that all talk. Seriously you don't really think you're good do you? Just be honest with yourself.... It was funny at first but now I get the feeling that you really think you are a bonafide football player.
