Sparkler 9's are 2009 State AAU Champions
Sparkler 9’s are 2009 State AAU Champions The Sports Academy Sparklers ended their regular season with 20 individual gold medals and one team title as they closed the season at the 2009 SC AAU State Championships, held in Florence, SC April 17-19 at the Freedom Florence Gymnastics Center.

The Sparklers fielded a Level 9 team for the first time in their 14-year history and came out as State Champions. Austie Castro 21 came out of a three-year layoff to lead the Sparklers with gold medal performances in the AA 35.05, vault 8.65, beam 9.0 and floor 9.15. Alexis Payne 16 won the gold medal on bars with a 9.175 and bronze medals on vault, beam, floor and AA. Samantha Pettigrew 16 won 5 silver medals, vault 8.6, bars 8.8, beam 7.75, floor 9.0, AA 34.15. Payne and Pettigrew will compete in the USAG Region 8 Level 8 Championships in Atlanta, GA April 26th.

Tori Settlemire 11 Level 8 won 3 gold medals, AA 34.7, bars 9.05, floor 9.2 and silver on vault and beam. Katherine Sanders 14 won the gold medal on vault 8.45, silver AA, and bronze on bars, beam and floor.

Level 7 Briley Langehans 13 won 2 gold medals AA 36.2, bars 9.1, silver medal vault 9.5 (new record) and bronze on beam. Tucker Langehans 11 won the silver on vault 9,2 and bronze on bars, beam and AA. Eliza Rhodes placed 4th on bars and 8th AA. The Level 7’s placed 4th in the team competition with a season high 105.05.

Level 6 Michaela Varn 12 won 2 gold medals AA 35.7, bars 8.9 (tied record), silver on vault 9.05, Beam 9.50 and placed 4th on floor. Ashley Payne 12 placed 6th AA with a season high 33.05.

The Sparkler 5’s were led by Jackie Barnes 10 with a bronze medal on bars 9.125 and 4th on vault and AA. Brittany Shealy 13 placed 5th AA with a season high 33.2, Hope Johnson 10 placed 7th AA. The Level 5’s placed 6th in the team competition.

Allison Kindwall 12 Level 4 won the gold medal on bars with a record setting 9.8 and placed 4th AA 36.0. Rachel Ruth 9 placed 7th on bars 9.4 and AA 36.05. Bricen Riley 9 won the bronze on beam 9.15, 8th on vault 9.05, floor 9.15 and placed 9th AA 35.95. Kelsey Woodruff 10 placed 4th on bars 9.45, floor 5th 9.05 and 6th AA 39.95. Tyler Goneke 14 placed 6th AA 34.35 .

The Level 4 Novice Sparklers, participating in the first meet of their careers, placed 3rd in the team competition led by Mari Beth Nolte 10, who won the gold medal on beam, bars 4th and 5th AA 33.15. Kristen Burnell 10 won the bronze on vault and AA 8th. Alyssa Pierce 9 won the bronze on beam, vault 5th, bars 5th, floor 4th, AA 6th. Vanessa Cox 8 won 2 gold medals AA 32.05, bars 7.95, silver medals on beam, floor and vault 4th. Chelsea Gardner won the gold medal on beam, bars silver and 4th AA. Kyleigh Easler 7 won the gold medal on floor and AA 6th. Nicole Kieff 7 won the gold medal on vault 8.9 and bronze medals for beam, floor and AA. Margaret Schubert 7 won 2 silver medals AA, floor, bronze bars and floor 4th. Madison Mullen 11 placed 6th floor and 7th AA.

The Sparklers will compete in the 2009 AAU National Age Group Gymnastics Championships, June 24 –28, Savannah Civic Center, Savannah, GA.

2009 SC USAG Level 5-10 State Championships

Sparklers 8’s Finish 6th at State

The Sports Academy Sparklers participated in the largest State Gymnastics Championships ever held in South Carolina, Mar 28-29 at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, over 550 Level 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10’s were on hand for the SC USAG State Championships. Individual awards were presented to the top 50% plus one in each age group.

The Level 8’s led by Samantha Pettigrew, the Level 8 15+ State Vaulting Champion with a new sparkler record of 9.35, finished 6th in the team competition. The Sparklers set new team records on bars 27.05, floor 27.8, and AA with a 107.525. The difference between 2nd and 6th was less than 1.5 points, MEGA from Gilbert won with a score of 110.150, and Easley Gymnastics was second with a score of 108.975. In addition to her gold medal for vault, Samantha won the silver medal AA with a new sparkler record of 36.325, bronze medal on floor, and 5th on bars. Teammate Alexis Payne 15+ won the silver medal on beam and floor, the bronze on bars and AA and she placed 7th on vault. Katherine Sanders 14 placed 6th on floor, Tori Settlemire 11 won the bronze medal on floor and placed 6th AA. Pettigrew and Payne qualified to participate in the Region 8 Level 8 Regional’s April 24-25, in Kennesaw, GA. Tori Settlemire and Hannah Shannon are alternates, only the top 26 Level 8’s in the state qualify for Level 8 Regional’s. This marks the first time in the history of the Sports Academy that they have had two regional qualifiers.

Level 7 medallists are Sierra Chaplin 15+ vault 8th, Eliza Rhodes 13 bars and beam 7th, Briley Langehans 13 vault 5th, floor 4th, bars, beam, AA 6th

Level 6 Michaela Varn 12 vault 4th, bars 6th, floor 8th, AA 5th

Level 5 medallists are Sarah Holloway 11A vault 4th, beam 2nd, floor 8th, AA 5th, Jackie Barnes 10 vault 8th, bars 3rd, Brittany Shealy 13+ floor 7th.

 

The Sparklers will travel to Florence on April 18-19 for the 2009 SC AAU Gymnastics Championships.
