Sparkler Duels
This was a great beginning and a very enjoyable meet. Thanks To : Gymnastics Inc and Hilton Head for coming and the Sparkler Parents for their support.

Sparkler Duels

The Sports Academy Sparklers hosted the 2006 Sparkler Duels on Saturday, Dec 9th.   The gymnastics competition was a preseason tune up with a unique format where the teams compete against each other similar to a wrestling match and the judges provided feedback to the coaches and athletes. Gymnastics Inc from Myrtle Beach won the inaugural Sparkler Duels championship award, the host Sparklers were second followed by Hilton Head Island Gymnastics .

This year’s gymnastics team is the largest in the 11 year history of the Sports Academy. The Sparklers competed as teams (must have at least 3 gymnast per level) in the following levels: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and Prep Optional 3. This also marks the first time we have had a level 8 and Prep Optional 3 team. The 2006-07 Sparklers are: Level 8, intermediate optional: Kelsey Covert, Taylor Short, and Samantha Pettigrew. Level 7 advanced beginner optional: Ashley Elhert, Katherine Sanders, Alexis Payne and Amanda Keenum. Prep Opt 3 intermediate beginner optional: Megan Rogowsky, Charlotte Loper, Cathyrn Walker, Margaret Sanders. Level 6 advanced compulsory: Mackenzie Bostick, Sierra Chaplin, Megan Bridgers, Jean Claire Bridgers,. Level 5 intermediate compulsory: Hailee Shacklefurd, Ona Loper, Tori Settlemire, Eliza Rhodes. Level 4, beginner compulsory: Sarah Holloway, Lauren Noonan, Heather Horle, Hannah Shannon, Michael Varn, Alyna Higdon.

If the Sparkler Duels results are any indication of things to come, the Sparklers will be a team to be reckoned with. The Level 7’s surpassed the previous level 7 team record with a score of 105.5, led by Amanda Keenum who set personal best’s in three of four events, vault 9.05, bars 9.2, floor 9.2 and the AA with a team high 36.05. Katherine Sanders scored a 9.35 on floor and Ashley Elhert provided additional support with a fine 34.75 AA. The level 7’s were without last years, level 6, 13 and up AA state champion, Alexis Payne who is out with an injury and will be back for the season opener at the Myrtle Beach Invitational.

In the level 8 completion, the Sparklers established a team record of 100.45. Taylor Short, 12, established new team record on Bars 9.4 and the AA with a 34.25. Teammate, Samantha Pettigrew 14, was right behind her teammate with a 34.00 AA, and a 9.0 on floor. Kelsey Covert, still recovering from an injury, contributed a solid performance, placing 4th AA and 2nd on vault.

The level 4’s, led by rookie Hannah Shannon‘s 35.5 AA, scored a fine 107.9. Veterans Sarah Holloway, 35.45 AA and Lauren Noonan 35 AA along with rookie Heather Horle’s 9.2 on floor led the Sparklers to a second place finish. Noonan scored a Sparkler high score of 9.5 on vault.

The level 5’s were led by 2nd year Sparkler, Hailee Shacklefurd, who scored a career high 35.05 just ahead of her teammate Tori Settlemire. Tori scored 9.1 on bars for the gold and 9.35 on floor for the silver. Hailee won 3 gold and two silver medals. Teammate Eliza Rhodes scored a 9.0 on bars. Ona Loper, the youngest Sparkler, won 2 gold and 3 silver medals in her age group. L

In the level 6 competition, Mackenzie Bostick won 3 gold and 1 silver medal, Sierra Chaplin won 2 gold and one silver, Megan and Jean Claire Bridgers each won a silver medal.

The Prep Optional 3’s, established new team records in all events and the AA, led by Charlotte Loper’s 34 AA, with fine 9.0 on bars.

The Sparklers will travel to Myrtle Beach January 5-7, Knoxville, Tn January 19-21, Clemson Feb 2-4, North Myrtle Beach February 17-19, and Charleston March 4-6, as they prepare for their State Championships.   The Sports Academy will host the 2007 SC District AAU Championships March 17-19. The SC Level 6-10 State Championships will be held March 23-25 at the Sports Zone, North Myrtle Beach and the SC Level 4-5 State Championships will be held March 30-April 1, Greenwood High School. The AAU Age Group National Championships will be held in Tampa, Fl, July 3-8.

Sparklers Start Season, Breaking Records

The Sports Academy Sparklers assaulted the 2007 season with record setting performance at the Myrtle Beach Invitational, hosted by Gymnastics, Inc., January 5-7. The Sparklers were the only team in the event to compete in 6 different levels. Over 350 athletes from throughout the region participated in the USAG sanctioned event.

The Level 8 team, the first ever for the Sports Academy, led by Taylor Short’s, 12, record setting gold medal performance on the floor with a 9.425 and her bronze medal, record setting 35.075 AA, set a new team record of 102.8. Teammate Samantha Pettigrew 14, held the AA record briefly with her 34.25 score, which placed her 4th AA. Kelsey Covert 14, placed 4th vault and 5th AA.

The Level 7 team, led by Katherine Sanders 12, gold medal on beam 9.1 and silver on vault 9.4 and AA 36.525, and a bronze on floor 9.325, set a new team record of 107.4, 3rd place team finish, breaking the previous record by 3 full points. Teammate Alexis Payne 14, won the gold on bars 9.25, silver on beam 8.9, and bronze on floor 35.375. Ashley Elhert 12, placed 5th on beam, floor, and AA 34.8 and Amanda Keenum 14, placed 4th on bars and floor and 5th AA 34.05.

Our Prep Opt 3 Team, set new records across the board, vault 8.8 Cathyrn Walker, bars 9.1 Cathyrn Walker, beam 8.65, floor 8.55 Megan Rogowsky, AA 34.550 Megan Rogowsky, team 102.65 for 1st place.

The Level 4 Sparklers turned in a spectacular performance as all six team members qualified for the State Open division level 4 state championships. This is the first time in several years we will have a team in the open division. Their team score of 108.625 is the third highest ever scored by a Sparkler team. Individual highlights were Lauren Noonan 9.5 on vault and a team high 35.975 AA, Michaela Varn 9.2 bars, Hannah Shannon 9.375 floor for a new team record. Level 4 is the largest group of gymnast in the state with over 336 registered athletes.

Sparklers Flip to New Records in Flip Fest 2007



The Sports Academy Sparklers participated in the 2007 Flip Fest 2007 hosted by Olympian’s John Macready and John Roethlisberger, at the Knoxville Convention Center, Jan 19-21. Flip Fest is the largest invitational the Sparkler’s have ever participated in, with over 2000 gymnast participating in men’s, women’s and trampoline and tumbling completion, the only USAG recognized discipline not participating was rhythmic gymnastics.


Ashley Elhert 12, Level 7, won a gold medal on beam with a new team record of 9.55, her 36.975 all around won the silver medal and was the second highest all around ever score posted by a Sparkler. She led her team to a new team record of 107.975. Teammate Katherine Sanders 12, placed 6th on beam with a 9.225 and 6th AA with a fine 36.225. Alexis Payne 14, won the gold on bars 9.125 , and Amanda Keenum 14, placed 4th on bars 9.05.


The Level 4 team, led by Hannah Shannon’s record setting gold medal 9.5 on beam, became the first team to ever score a over 110 in the team competition. Shannon placed 4th on bars, 6th on floor, and 7th AA with a 36.5. Teammate Michaela Varn placed 8th AA with a 36.45, and 5th on vault with a 9.3. Sarah Holloway placed 6th on vault and scored her first 36.175 AA.


The Level 8 team, led by Taylor Short’s, 8th on vault, 11th on beam , 7th on floor, and 10th AA, set a new team record with a 102.975. Samantha Pettigrew placed 11th on bars, tying the previous record with a 8.75.


Our Prep Opt 3 Team, set 2 new records, vault 9.0 Cathyrn Walker, and floor 9.1 Megan Rogowsky.

Clemson University Inaugural Tiger Paw Classic


The Sports Academy Sparklers participated in the first Tiger Paw Classic Gymnastics Invitational held at the Littlejohn Coliseum on the campus of Clemson University, 2-4 February. The event was hosted by Clemson University, Upstate Events, and Upstate Gymnastics, Pendleton, SC. Over 1200 gymnasts participated in the 3 day event of which over 1100 were South Carolina gymnasts. The event was held in an effort to show the University the support and economic impact of the gymnastics community as we try to encourage them to add women’s gymnastics as one of their collegiate sports.


The Level 4 team, led by ten year old Michaela Varn’s, record setting 9.375 for the gold medal on floor, set a new team record in route to a 6th place finish with a score of 110.175. Varn placed 2nd on vault, 4th on bars and AA, 36.375. Teammate Hannah Shannon 10, won the silver on bars and floor, and placed 5th AA 36.2. Lauren Noonon 10, won the silver medal on floor and AA, 36.05 and the bronze on beam. Heather Horle 12, won the gold medal on floor 9.325 and bronze AA. Sarah Holloway 9, won the silver medal on vault, bronze on beam and AA.


Level 7 Alexis Payne 14, won a gold medal on bars with a 9.3 which tied the team record, she scored a season high 35.25 AA. Ashley Elhert 12, won a gold medal on beam, and placed fourth on vault, bars, and AA. Katherine Sanders 12, won the bronze on vault and Amanda Keenum 14, won the bronze on bars.


Level 6 Sierra Chaplin 14, won the gold on vault and teammate Jean Claire Bridges 12, scored a season high 34.1 for 5th AA, and placed 4th on vault and bars.


Level 5 Tori Settlemire 9, won the silver medal on vault and placed 4th on beam and AA. Eliza Rhodes 11, won the bronze on bars and beam, and placed 5th AA. Hailee Shacklefurd 12, won the bronze on bars and floor and placed 4th AA.


Prep Opt 3 Megan Rogowsky 13, placed 4th on beam with a record setting 9.1, and won the bronze on bars. Cathyrn Walker 14, won the bronze on vault and bars and placed 5th AA.

Sparkler 7"s Shatter Records at the Beach
 The Sports Academy Sparklers participated in the 2007 Beach Break Invitational held at the brand new “Sports Zone, in Little River, SC hosted by Gymnastics and More. The Sparkler 7’s placed third with a new team record of 110.125. They were led by Alexis Payne 14, who set a new record with a gold medal on bars, 9.4 and won the gold medal in the all around with a season high 36.7, she also won silver on vault 9.2 and beam 9.175. Teammate Katherine Sanders 12, set a new record on vault 9.45 for 5th, and became the first level 7 to score two 9.4’s or higher in the same meet with her 9.4 silver medal on floor. Ashley Elhert 12, just missed scoring at least a 9.0 on each event when she placed 6th on floor with a 8.95, her other scores were 9.2 vault,7th bars 9.325, 6th beam 9.1, AA 6th 36.575. Amanda Keenum 14, had the best meet of her career just missing a 36 AA with her bronze medal 35.975. Keenum won a silver medal on bars 9.35, bronze floor 9.05, 5th beam 8.55, and 4th vault 9.05. Level 5 Hailee Shacklefurd 12,led her team to a 105.95 5th place finish with gold medal ‘s on beam 9.15 and AA 35.675 as well as silver on vault 8.8, bars 8.9 and bronze on floor 8.825. Tori Settlemire 9, won the gold with a record tying 9.35 on floor, and 4th place finishes on bars 8.9 and AA 36.325. Eliza Rhodes 11, placed 4th on floor 8.55 and 5th AA. Teammate Ona Loper 7, the youngest Sparkler, had her best meet of the season with a 9.15 on floor and a 33.7 AA. The Level 4 team, were by 10 year old Hannah Shannon‘s gold medal 9.2 on floor and silver medal‘s for beam 9.325, and AA 36.625 plus a bronze on vault 9.05. Teammates Alyna Higdon 11 and Heather Horle 12, each won gold medal’s, Higdon won bars with a 9.15 and Horle won floor with a 9.025. Michaela Varn placed 4th on bars 9.15, beam 9.05 and AA 35.5. Lauren Noonan 10, placed 5th on vault 8.8, Beam 8.5 and 4th on bars 8.75 and AA 35.125. Sarah Holloway 9 won the bronze AA 34.75 and placed 4th on vault 8.8.9.325 and bronze AA. Level 6 Sierra Chaplin 14, won the silver on vault and bronze AA. Teammates Jean Claire Bridges 12, placed 7th on bars and Mackenzie Bostick 11, placed 7th on vault. Megan Bridgers 11,placed 11th on vault. Prep Opt 3’s led by Cathyrn Walker 14, broke or tied 4 team records, with a 103.650 team score. Walker set 3 new records when she scored a 9.4 for a bronze on vault, a 9.3 5th on bars, and a 7th place 36.1 AA, in addition to her 9th place 8.8 on floor. Margaret Sanders 14, placed 5th on beam with a record tying 9.1. Megan Rogowsky 13, won the bronze on bars 9.0. Level 8, Samantha Pettigrew 14, placed 4th on vault with a season high 8.65, her start value is a 9.4. The Sparklers will travel to Charleston March 2-4, as they prepare for their State Championships. The Sports Academy will host the 2007 SC District AAU Championships March 16-18. The Sports Academy Sparklers augmented by their 21 pre team hopeful’s, fielded the largest team in their history in front of the hometown fans during the 2007 SC AAU District Gymnastics Championships, hosted by Sports Academy Gymnastics.

In order to qualify for the AAU JR. Olympic games, the Sparkler Prep Optional, level 7 and 8 teams were combined into the intermediate optional level. In the 14 year old an over age group, Samantha Pettigrew led her team to a sparkling 111.15 first place finish with gold medals on vault, floor, and AA with an outstanding 36.625. Amanda Keenum 14, won the gold on beam and silver on bars, floor, and AA with a 36.3. Alexis Payne 14, won the gold on bars with a 9.5, silver on vault, bronze on floor and AA with a 35.775. Kelsey Covert won the silver on beam, and bronze on vault. In the 11-13 year old age group, Katherine Sanders won the gold AA with a 36.2 and 4 silver medals, vault, bars, beam, and floor. Taylor Short won the gold on vault, bars, floor, and silver AA with a 36.15. Newcomer Madeline Aune, won the gold on beam with a 9.45 and bronze on vault, floor and AA. Ashley Elhert won the bronze on bars.

The Sparkler 4’s led by 10 year old Hannah Shannon‘s record setting gold medal 37.225 AA, placed 3rd with a new team record of 111.175. Sumter YMCA the favorite to win the upcoming SC USAG Level 4 Championships, won the team competition with a 112.625, Summerville YMCA was second with a 111.225. Shannon won the gold on vault, bars, beam and silver on floor. Michaela Varn won the silver medal on vault, bars, AA with a 36.5 and bronze floor. Sarah Holloway won the gold on vault with a record tying 9.6, silver on beam and bronze AA with a 36.275. Alyna Higdon won the silver medal on bars and floor, and bronze on vault and floor. Lauren Noonan won the silver on vault and bronze on beam and floor. Heather Horle won the gold on floor, bronze on bars, silver on bars and AA with a 36.3.

Mackenzie Bostick led the Sparkler 6’s to the team title with gold medals on vault, beam, AA with a 34.00 and bronze on bars and floor. Megan Bridgers won the silver medal on bars and beam. Jean Claire Bridgers won the gold on bars and floor and silver on beam and AA.

The Level 5 team placed 5th in the team competition led by Tori Settlemire’s 8-9 year old age group, gold medals on vault, bars, AA with a 34.625 and silver on floor. Ona Loper 8-9, won the gold on floor, silver on vault, beam and AA with a 33.025 and bronze on bars. Eliza Rhodes 12, won the bronze on beam.


The Sparkler Pre team Level 4 Novices in their first meet won the team title with a 102.3, in order to qualify as a novice, gymnast could not have scored a 28 or higher AA in any previous meet.


Bricen Riley in the 7-9 age group, scored a team high 33.075 AA for the silver medal and won the bronze on beam and floor. Hope Johnson won the gold on vault 9.3 and bronze AA. Jewell Budde won the gold on floor and the silver on beam. Jackie Barnes won the silver on bars and floor. McKenzie Gordon won the silver on vault and bronze on floor. In the 11 year old age group, Alexis Crosson won the gold medal on floor and AA, and the silver on vault, bars and beam. Brittany Shealy won the gold on vault and beam, and the silver on floor and AA. Ashley Lavine won the gold on bars, bronze vault, floor, and AA. Mallory Kirby won the bronze on bars and beam. In the 12 and up age group, Elizabeth Bridgers won the gold on beam and AA, silver on vault, floor and bronze on bars. Josie Jones won the gold on bars and floor, silver beam, AA and vault bronze. Destinee Andrews won the gold on vault, silver on bars, bronze beam, floor, and AA.

The Level 3 team placed 5th in the team competition and were led by Chandra Johnson’ 35.10 AA. In the 10 year old age group, Johnson won the silver medal on bars. Amber Wood 9, won the bronze on vault and floor. In the 11 and over age group, Tyler Goneke won the bronze on vault, beam and AA. Katelyn Day won the bronze on bars and floor. In the 7-8 age group, Devon Kirby won the silver on vault,

In total the Sparklers won 38 gold medals, 47 silver and 39 bronze, along with 3 team titles. The Sparkler optionals will represent South Carolina in the 2007 AAU Jr. Olympics Games, July 28-Aug 1, Knoxville, Tn.

Sparklers win Gold, Taylor qualifies for Level 8 Regional Team,

SC USAG Level 6-10 State Championships
Taylor Short became the first Sparkler to earn a team position on the South Carolina Level 8 Team that will be participating in the Region 8 Level 8 Regional’s April 13-15 at the Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of NC State. The top 8 Level 8 gymnasts compete as a team against other teams from the region which includes North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. 22 other South Carolina gymnasts qualified as All Stars for the 3-day event. Level 8 is the first level that offers competition above State. Gymnasts were divided by level and age groups, with 50% plus 1 receiving individual awards.

Short 12, established new individual records with her silver medal 9.425 bar routine and her 9.175 silver medal on beam along with her 36.45 bronze medal all around plus 8th on vault and 6th on floor. Teammate Samantha Pettigrew 14, placed 7th on beam and floor and Kelsey Covert 14, placed 6th on Floor. The Level 8’s set a new team record of 104.95 as they finished 8th in the team competition.

Alexis Payne 14, led the Level 7 Sparklers to a 9th place team finish with gold medals on vault and bars with a new team record of 9.425 and she placed 3rd AA. Ashley Elhert 12 young, won the gold on beam with a 9.35, the silver AA with a team high 36.65 as well as 8th on vault, 7th on bars, and 5th on floor with a 9.35. Amanda Keenum 14 won bronze medals on bars and floor and placed 4th AA. Katherine Sanders 12 young, placed 4th on floor 9.375, 8th on vault and beam, 7th AA.

The Sparkler 6’s tied for 10th in the team competition and were led by Sierra Chaplin 14, state vault champion and 6th AA. Jean Claire Bridgers placed 7th AA with a team high 34.65 as well as 5th on beam and 7th on vault and bars. Mackenzie Bostick 11 won the silver medal on beam and placed 6th on vault and 4th AA. Megan Bridgers 11 won the bronze medal on bars. beam and AA plus 5th on floor.

The Sparklers won 4 gold medals, 3 silver medals, 6 bronze medals and 21 placement medals as well as placing in the top 10 in the team competition at each level.

The Level 4 and 5 Sparklers will participate in their state competition at Converse College, March 31 and April 1.
