Vashon Qualifies Ten Wrestlers to State (2005)
By Rik Forschmidt

Vashon wrestling coach Anders Blomgren teaches mythology at Vashon High School. His future students may think this wrestling season is one of those myths.
Starting with a squad of 15, to compete in 14 weight classes, the Pirates first won the Nisqually League dual-meet title. Next they won the district meet and advanced 12 wrestlers and an alternate to regionals.
Last Saturday, the Pirates won two individual regional championships, placed second as a team and advanced 10 wrestlers and one alternate to state.
First-year wrestler Duncan Mayshark did the unbelieveable in defeating Izzy Torres of Nooksack Valley for the 215-pound championship, and Dom Wolczko, a graduate of Rockbusters junior wrestling, pinned Dustin Praxedes, Klahowya, in the second round for the 160-pound title.
The Gateman brothers, Tyler, 103, and Alex, 112, finished second in their weight classes. Eric Phillips, 135, and Micah Sohl, 152, finished third, both with pins in their final bouts, and David Twietmeyer, 189, won an 8-5 decision for third. Stephe Wolczko took fourth at 171.
When Alex Stemer, 112, won his consolation semi-final, placing him in the final match for third- and fourth-place, he appeared not to understand at first when coach Blomgren congratulated him on making state. Stemer eventually finished fourth (the top five finishers advance to state).
With nine wrestlers qualified for state, volunteer assistant coach Eric Bingham was focused on the two matches for fifth- and sixth-place involving Vashon wrestlers. A team with nine or fewer qualifiers gets three coaches passes to state and 10 or more qualifiers rates four passes, and Anders and Per-Lars Blomgren and BJ Nelson had first dibs on state passes.
When Wiley Volker pinned Josh Undebacht, Port Townsend, at 2:24 of their 130-pound final, Bingham told Volker, “You just bought my ticket to state.”
Will Olsen, 140, ran out of time and lost to Tim Meyers, Mount Baker, to get an alternate slot.
Eric Anderson, 119, put a scare into Steilacoom’s Daniel Johnston in a consolation match, but Johnston recovered to eliminate Anderson.
Mat Classic XIV, the state wrestling tournament, begins at 10 a.m Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19, at the Tacoma Dome.
