Micah Sohl Takes 2nd at Mat Classic - Beachcomber article By Ric Forschmidt Micah Sohl was two years ahead of schedule last Saturday when he earned second place in the 152-pound weight class at the state wrestling tournament in his first trip to state. Sohl, a sophomore, is the son of Vashons second-ever state wrestling medalist. Jim Sohl placed fifth at 148 pounds in 1982. Hes pretty proud of me, said Micah Sohl just before his final match. I said Im gonna beat my dad by my senior year. Sohls only loss in the tourney was 8-7 in the championship final to Woodland senior John Quintrell. Last year Vashons Josh Thorn beat Quintrell for seventh place, and that was about all Sohl knew about his final opponent. Im gonna go in there pretty positively, said Sohl before the final. Im just gonna go out and wrestle him. Sohl said wrestling at state has been his dream since middle school. Sohl gained the final by pinning Chelans Lukas Wolff in 3 minutes, 54 seconds, then winning 1-point decisions over Brad Groce of Medical Lake and Jake Horsmon of Klahowya. Four other Pirates came home with medals, giving the Vashon team seventh place. Tyler Gateman, 103 pounds, came back from a quarter-final loss take third place with a 3-2 decision over Jake Luczynski of Cascade-Leavenworth. Alex Gateman, 112, eliminated teammate Alex Stemer on the way to eighth place. Dom Wolczko, 160, took seventh with a 16-0 technical fall over Ryan Phipps of Kiona-Benton. And Duncan Mayshark, 215, held on for a 3-5 decision over Michael Katzer, Hoquiam, and seventh place. Wiley Volker, 130, Eric Phillips, 135, Stephe Wolczko, 171, and David Twietmeyer, 189, did not make it to the medal round. Phillips lost a heart-breaker in his first match, against Mark Ouradnik of Ephrata. The referee signalled a pin for Phillips at the end of round two, but when the Ephrata coach protested, the time-keeper ruled that time had run out before the pin. Phillips was not given any take-down points and Ouradnik went on to win 8-4 and ultimately take third place. I said wed be anywhere between 20th and fourth, said Vashon coach Anders Blomgren of his prospects before the season began. Our guys wrestled tough, said Blomgren. They over-achieved from what everyone else predicted, even though we knew they could do it. Eight of the 10 state participants, including all five medalists, return next year. Phillips and Stephe Wolczko graduate in June. |
