The 2004-05 Season Recap (of sorts)
Vashon takes Nisqually League duel title in 49-28 win over Klahowya

It was a great matchup tonight with Vashon taking the win over a strong visiting Klahowya team 49-28. Impressive wins by Volker who won with a major decision and Duncan Mayshark who again proved he's an up and comming force in the league helped spur on the victory as did pins by Eric Phillips - who showed great defensive skills tonight...and did a fine job of stacking his opponent, Will Olsen, who's becomming a force as a140 soph. and Tyler Gateman.

The match of the night however, will be scored in the books as an injury default. But those of us who had a chance to see Micah Sohl's catlike balance, fantastic control and devistating quickness take on one of Klahowya's heavy hitters Dustin Parxedes, will not soon forget the match. Micah agressively took the match to a confident Paraxedes who clearly didn't expect what Micah was about to give him. When Paraxedes made shots, Micah countered and scrambled as well as anyone I've seen this year and gave Paraxedes a problem he just couldn't solve. Down 13-0 to Sohl with one second to go, Paraxedes tapped out for the injury default.

The question now is how much longer Micah can fly under the radar. I think he's going to surprise some people in the next few weeks and also have a chance to find some things out about how well he's wrestling. Next up is the League/District meet at Klahowya where Micah will face some tough competition; notably Port Townsend's Sloan Gutierrez (Nick Snyder;s son for those of you from the old guard).

Vashon qualifies first wrestler of the year to State.

Yes, the Vashon Rockbusters will send Alex Sohl (Micah's little brother) to Washington State Folkstyle Championships Saturday and Sunday January 29-30 (Edmonds-Woodway High School 7600 – 212th St. S.W. Edmonds, WA. 98026 - wrestling begins at 10AM), as he earned a third place finish in todays qualifier. Alex, who also played fullback and linebacker for last years Vashon Pirate Youth Football team, now has household bragging rights, but I'd imagine that they won't last too long as Micah's got a date with the "Home Sweet Dome" next month. Make sure to give Alex a slap on the back the next time you see him...and don't forget his proud Mom and Dad as well!

Tahoma Tournament:

All smiles coming back from Tahoma with our half a squad-- bringing back plenty of spoils to share with the students and staff at Vashon High School. (Half the squad was resting with match count management...) Medallists: 1st Freight Train Gateman rolled on all weekend, pinning and teching all his foes. 2nd Duncan "half man half" Mayshark pinned two opponents and dominated another before finished 2nd to Dominique Small of Beamer High School. 3rd. Alex "Steamboat" Stemer blew his steamboat whistle after pinning his 3rd opponent in a day. Alex stepped in for the other Alex (Gateman that is) and went 3 and 1 for 3rd place. He has talent and will be a star in the future-- with a little hard work, of course. 3rd. Willfred Olsen- Lost only one match on a late reversal. He showed poise and confidence to go 3-1 for the day. 3rd. Stevey Wolzcko-- Dominated all his foes but for Michael "The Big Ez" Johnson, who is one of the best wrestlers in the state, any weight any classification. 3rd. David Twietmeister rocked all his opponents after a shaky start to the tourney. He's on a roll again. 5th. Alex Looking Glass Laughlin-- he is one of the most entertaining and most improved Vashon wrestlers. He scores points, he gives up points, he scores points, gives up points. The coaches like it when he's down by at least 12. "That's when we know he has a win in the bag," says coach Per Lars Blomgren. Alex pinned his 2 opponents to get in the semis, then lost 2 close decisions. Larry Ligrano and Eric Anderson both wrestled tough and have improved, but ran into tough competition before the medal round.

Vashon takes double wins in double duel vs Orting and Steilacoom:

Vashon 52 Orting 21

Starting out the evening with one of the marquee matchups in 2A, Tyler Gateman and Tony Farrington squared off in what can only be described as a state level match. These two have been wrestling each other since elementary school days in every style, format and venue you can imagine and that experience showed. Under the lights at Steilacoom, the battle went Farringtons way as he was able to counter and capitalize on Tylers great agressiveness, turning Tylers shots into Farringtons takedows for a 7-1 final. Believe me, both of these wrestlers will make fine showings at the State level and both should bring home some hardware.

Vashon 51 Steilacoom 24

It was clear that Brad Muri of Steilacoom is worthy of his ranking, state and national finishes and reputation as a great kid. It's good to see kids from different teams have long established friendships and as this was a reunion of sorts for Brad and quite a few of the Vashon kids who wrestle Freestyle, go to Fargo and wrestle at several of the State and intensive camps, there was a lot of catching up to do. As for ability, Muri has always seemed to have gears, and Eric Phillips pressed him into using some of the gears he's likely not used in a while. Eric was impressive as the match started with both up showing great quickness and dexterity, but was unable to capitalize on his feet. On the mat, few can match Muri, and it showed great defensive skills for Eric to avoid what has been almost a given for all but the States best at 135; no points scored on and it ending with a pin. Final score tonight: Brad Muri 15 Eric Phillips 0.

Check back later for more on both the Orting and Steilacoom matches. I'll put my expanded report and individual matchs on the Bikerman's View page.

Hoquiam:
It was a great tourney for our guys providing excellent matches and great opportunities to hone skills into "mad skills". With both Tyler Gateman and David Twietmeyer sitting out to save on their match count, the Pirates finished the weekend strong winning 14 of the last 15 matches to crown one champion and a slew of placers.

Micah "Air Jordan" Sohl won his first of many future championships, defeating his Elma opponent 7-1 in the finals. "He breezed through the competition like was a breakaway finger roll" said proud coach Anders Blomgren. Odds are his Dad had a wry smile on his face as well.

Alex "Getting my grove on" Gateman capped possibly his best tournament ever with an overtime victory over his Sunnyside opponent for a well earned 3rd place. Looking at the competition, Alex may have had one of the toughest weight classes in the tourney, and this showing shows how competitive Alex is wrestling right now. Great job Alex.

"Dominatrix Wolzckito" - Lord of the power half - placed 3rd and "Dom"inated all of his opponents but one. "My key to success", Dominatrix said, "is my Polish background, my black tights and my stinky armpits."

Stevey Wolzckito placed 3rd as well, having the match of the tournament (fans are still talking about it) on Friday night. Down 17-4 in the 3rd round, Stevey pinned his Othello opponent to reach the semis. He came back to take 3rd in the tournament. I understand Stevey pulled his inspiration from Mr. Laughlin's spectacular comback win in Sequim last week.

Duncan "Half Man Half" Mashark placed 5th and is getting better every week. I was contacted recently from the people who make learning curves...they're concerned. Apparently the "steep" designation they have set is being cranked even steeper by Duncan's meteoric rise in abilities and may require them to rethink what is actually possible for humans. I told them not to worry about it...he's not human, he's a Mashark!

"Tech Fall" Phillips and Wiley Volker placed 7th and Larry "The left nhanded landlord" Ligrano finished up the Hoquiam Tourney placers with an 8th.

Sequim and Port Tounsend
Vashon beat Sequim 39-35 in a dramatic confrontation and in dramatic fashion when Wiley "He's Crafty" Volker pinned his opponent in the last match to bring the team back for the win from two point deficit entering the match. But it was truely a team effort with both Stephan and Dom bumping up weight classes and scoring wins, Alex Stemmer wrestling a great match and Eric Phillips comming from behind and winning with a pin.

With big pins from Eric Anderson, Will Olsen and Duncan Mashark, Vashon also beat Port Townsend 56-15.

More scores:

Vashon 66-11 vs. Cascade Christian
Vashon 37-36 vs. Puyallup. Vashon winning the tie-breaker and getting one team point for winning more matches. It was a particularly impressive match for the Pirates as they went in forfeiting 3 weight classes and still taking home the win. I was particularly impressed with Eric Phillips and Tyler Gateman who showed that they are ready to compete with anyone and Dom Wolzco who had the match of the evening coming back to win against a very tallented opponent.
Vashon 66-12 vs. Eatonville
It was a quick evening of wrestling with all but one match ending in a pin or forfeit and that one match being a 6-5 win for Dom Wolzco at 171 lbs. over Eatonville's Ken Rebic. Duncan Mayshark showed a lot of heart and composure to come from behind to score his pin in 2:34. Alex Gateman had the quick pin of the evening scoring his in :29. Eatonville scored it's points on a forfeit at 135 and a win at 152 where Eatonville's Mike Cool caught Ed King for a pin in 1:53.
North Mason 41, Vashon 36
Take a look at Carl Blomgrens article in the Beachcomber for the skinny on the match.

Tri-State went pretty well for a young team. Tyler Gateman went 3-2 to place in the top 8. Micah Sohl. also had a 3-2 finish but missed placing. Wiley Volker went 2-2, as did Eric Phillips. Dom Wolzcko put one win in the books and Alex Gateman and David Twietmeyer wrestled competitively in very difficult weight classes. All-in-all a good showing in what is thought of as the toughest tournament in the region, having 60 high calibre teams from Oregon, Idaho, California, Montana and Washington invited to attend every year.

2004 Rock team scores: 1st. Lakeside (ranked 1st in state), 2nd Mt Baker (ranked 2nd in state), 3rd Hoquiam (ranked 3rd in state), 4th VASHON, 5th Connell (ranked 5th in state).   6. Blaine 103.00 7. Ridgefield 96.00 8. Elma 54.50 9. Quincy 53.00 10. Orting 44.50

Vashon takes 5th at Rainshadow and crowns two champs.

Tyler "Freight Train" Gateman won the Gregorian Award for most pins in the least amount of time. Alex "Getting his Groove on" Gateman became the first Vashon wrestler to win 2 Sequim Rainshadow titles.

Every wrestler at Sequim scored a pin, including Alex "Looking Glass" Laughlin who celebrated his come from behind victory with a fine jig. See, there's a reason they always play music in the wrestling room!

Here's a short list of some goings on last summer...

Evan "Mad Dogg" Mattingly was one match away from placing in the 215 lbs. division at Junior Nationals in Fargo.

Tyler "Freight Train" Gateman finished 6th in Cadets at 91 lbs.

Great job guys!
