Vashon claims district title By Carl Blomgren Feb 09 2005 The road to the Washington State Wrestling Tournament at the Tacoma Dome passes through the district wrestling tournament, which was held this year at Klahowya Secondary School. Even though Vashon had won the Nisqually League dual meet championship, the pundits remained convinced these Blustering Barnacles (aka Pirate wrestlers) were too young and inexperienced to return home with anything higher than third- or fourth-place medals. So much for the punditry. When nine wrestlers — out of a squad of 15 — reach the finals, and 12 qualify for regionals, one seriously wonders what’s going on: what are their trainers doing? They ain’t talking, other than professing to be in great shape and honed to ride a bucking bronco if need be. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have a coach voted by his peers as Nisqually League Coach of the Year for 2003-2004. My particular connection to this mentor prohibits me from saying anything more than I think he and his coaches are doing a top-notch job. I only wish I could wrestle for Anders, Per-Lars and BJ, even though I’m not sure I’d be able to handle many (any?) of their agility drills and master Anders’ famous move: a triple under-hook reversal followed by a Swedish tie. Here’s what happened last Saturday in the finals at the tournament: 103-pound Tyler Gateman met, as expected, nemesis Tony Farrington from Orting High School, who had beaten him the last couple of times they had faced one another. Tied 3-3 at the end of regulation time, Tyler countered an attempted takedown to win in overtime, 5-3. Alex Gateman beat another Pirate named Alex (Stemer) to take first place at 112; Eric Anderson wrestled well at 119 before losing in the finals; Eric Phillips lost in the finals to two-time state champion Brad Muri from Steilacoom; Will Olsen beat a tough Amberle Montgomery for 3rd place; Micah Sohl was defeated by his Pt. Townsend opponent, taking 2nd place. Dominic Wolczko put away an angry, aggressive Klahowyan in a very exciting match, bringing home the gold; Stefan Wolczko wrestled tough to garner a 3rd place; David Twietmeyer reached the finals before losing, taking a 2nd; the indomitable Duncan Mayshark did it again, by winning a close one, 11-9, in the finals; Wiley Volker came back from an opening loss to win a well-deserved 3rd place; Ed King took 5th place (an alternate to regionals); Wes York took 6th. Alex Laughlin and Casey Ligrano completed the entries for Vashon. Next action takes place on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Mountlake Terrace High School, where regional competition is held. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. Blustering Barnacles! You’d better be there! |
