Grapplers grab third duel meet title - Carl Blomgren
Before the wrestling season opened, the pundits predicted that Klahowya, along with Steilacoom or possibly Orting, would win the Nisqually League dual-meet championship this year. After all, Vashon had lost, by way of graduation, six state placers from a team that garnered third in the state last year. It was inconceivable they could come close to grabbing the league title again.
However, coaches Anders and Per-Lars Blomgren and BJ Nelson refused to accept the odds. They declared before the season opened that they were going to surprise a lot of people — and by surprise, I take it to mean this would not be just a rebuilding year, but one that would exhibit a bunch of scrappy die-hard kids who would absolutely refuse to quit. Were they projecting? After all, don’t many teams take on the personas of their coaches?
Whatever the case, they whipped Steilacoom, Orting, and last Thursday, Klahowya. It wasn’t pretty — if you were from Klahowya. Coach Per-Lars had predicted the outcome, match by match, with Vashon squeaking out a 35-32 win.
In actuality, Wiley Volker, Eric Phillips and Micah Sohl exceeded his expectations by winning even bigger than he figured. Final score: Vashon 49 - Klahowya 28.
The route to center circle (aka, the wrestling mat) varies from kid to kid. Most of them, however, started early with the Rockbusters, shortly A.D. (after diapers). Wiley Volker took this route. Encouraged by supportive parents, he refused to concentrate only on wrestling by also participating in soccer, football and baseball — when he’s not snow-, skate- or wake-boarding. Yikes, you say, when does he hit the books? Wiley admits time is definitely a factor when it comes to getting everything in. At the same time, he figures it keeps him on the straight and narrow (most of the time). He’s aiming for the University of Oregon, where he’s planning to study Engineering.
Not all kids enter center circle by way of Rockbusters. Junior Duncan Mayshark had never wrestled before Coach Anders conned him into turning out this year. What a find. For most fellows, it takes several years to get a feel (balance, technique, etc.) for the sport; Duncan has learned this in a few months. He has several things going for him, besides a long, lean and quick 215-pound sound body. He actually enjoys hard work and finds it gratifying to learn new moves. His learning includes more than wrestling moves: last year he took a BYU distance learning course to study Russian, a language his father speaks. He claims his name “Mayshark” is Polish rather than Russian. When his great-grandfather reached Ellis Island, his surname “Meinsharkowski” was changed to “Mayshark” to make things a little easier for Americans. Not a bad name for a wrestler.
Last summer Duncan was involved with other kids in a student ambassador program which traveled to Greece, France, Italy and England. He had to raise $5,000 to do so. Perhaps you’re getting a feeling for this lad. To make matters even a little more surrealistic, Duncan and Wiley have another thing in common: they’re both 4.0 students. We’ll try not to hold that against them.
Duncan likes to write and plans to pursue a vocation in journalism. He presently writes for the Riptide. Viva la Meinsharkowski!
My heart goes out to those of you who missed this last match. However, another opportunity to watch these awesome berserkangars roll around on the mat presents itself this Saturday, Feb. 5, at Klahowya High School where the district tournament takes place. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. Cave Canem! Achenzenzik!
