Top wrestlers in 2a What I tried to do here is give a list of the top returnees at each weight. I didnt try to project what weight they would be at. I will until they wrestle at a weight before I rank them at that weight. 2a 103: Marty Kincade- Pullman Dallas Hintz- Ephrata Kellen Hopkins- East Valley J.J. Garza- Top***h Robert Spackman- Riverside Tony Farrington- Orting Everyone is back at this weight. The question will be who will stay at this weight and who will be able to grow into the weight. My guess is that at least half of these wrestlers will be at a higher weight. You also will have a couple of freshman come in and mix things up. Farrington had a successful run at nationals and if he is close to 103 he could be the top wrestler. Tyler Gateman of Vashon could also make an impact after placing at nationals. Unfortunately he also is undersized. 112: J.D. Goodrich- Stevenson Levi Jones- Lakeside Scott Thompson- East Valley Brandon Monteith- Mt Baker Conrad Garza- Othello Justin Propeck- Medical Lake As usual this looks like a loaded weight class. Goodrich did it the hard way with close victories over Monteith, Thompson and Jones. Jones probably will end up in a higher class. Thompson was a state champ two years ago and will be hard to beat his senior year. 119: Bryan Bosch- Lacenter Edgar Mendez- Connell Tyler Justus- Ridgefield Anthony Heffernan- Orting Mac Watson- Rochester Travis Lensing- Steilacoom This weight lost some outstanding wrestlers in Cantu and Bennett. More than likely someone from 112 will be here. I ranked based on placing from last year but if I were to pick I would go with Mendez as my top pick. He just happened to have a bad tournament at the wrong time. 125: Brandon Muri- Steilacoom .Daniel Curula- Elma Stephen Gilllis- Lakewood Chris Smith- Ephrata Aaron Anderson- Deer Park Josh Martinez- Lacenter Muri will be a big favorite this year. He could be the top wrestler in 2a this year. Curulla has the talent but needs to stay on the mat the whole season. Giles can give almost anyone a hard time because of his style. 130: Rick Shattuck- Orting Justin Eastman- Rochester Zack Brissey- Ephrata Aaron Carr- Lacenter Justin Christman-Lakeside Kameron Hopkin- East Valley Eastman looks like he could be a real star the next couple of years. Even though he was only 3rd last year he may be the favorite at this weight.Shattuck pulled a big upset in the finals last year and will be tough to beat. The dark horse could be Hopkins who was having a very good year until the state tournament. 135: Torrin Bradbury-Montersano Mark Ouradnik-Ephrata Ray Hodge-Riverside Kyle Shattuck-Orting Bradbury was 3rd in a very difficult weight class last year. Who knows where he will be wrestling this year but clearly he will be one of the favorites at any weight he is at. If Ouradnik makes another jump like he did last year he could end up being a finalist like his brother. 140: Keith Johnson-Port Townsend Jose Gonzales-Kiona-Benton David Snyder-Medical Lake Julian Perine-Hoquiam Freddie Flores-Othello I thought that Johnson and Gonzales would face each other in the state finals. Lance Somers had the tournament of his life messing up that prediction. Johnson is an outstanding athlete that could be very difficult to beat. Gonzales will come in with three years of state experience. Snyder could be a dark horse from a team that will be very good. 145: David Rae-Connell Brad Groce-Medical Lake John Quintrell-Woodland Travis Southwick-Medical Lake Wil Paton- Cashmere Bryan Hugo-Ridgefeild Almost every year the top wrestlers end up in this weight class. My guess is that someone from 140 will end up here, but until that happens Rae should be the favorite. He has placed twice in very difficult weigh classes. The Medical Lake pair could make things interesting in the team race. Groce made the semis last year with an upset of a state finalist in the quarterfinals. 152: Jon Millard-Lakeside Jake Horsman- Mt Baker Sloan Gutierrez- Port Townsend Keven Ryan- Castle Rock Kyle Prescott- Nachez Valley The drop of Newport to 1a opens this weight up a bit and end what could have been a great rivalry between Millard and Jared Skyles. Millard could be ready to dominate any weight he is at. He is a tall wrestler so he probably will grow out of this weight. Horsman is more than likely to be at 152. He was lighter than most at152 last year, so a years growth could make him a force at this weight. Gutierrez is another good athlete from Port Townsend that could place high this year. 160: Tony Smith-Lakeside Spencer Sharpe- Hoquiam Brent Collier- Klahowya David Palumbo-Colville Tim Bell- Rochester Nathan Vanderven-Port Townsend Smith is another tall wrestler that probably will be at a higher weight. He has a wide open style that is definitely not boring to watch. Without Smith this weight is pretty much wide open. 171: Jake Walter- Omak Cory Creighton- Stevenson Tony Lee- Connell Andy Hedman- Klahowya Randall Johnson- Medical Lake Ben Niccum- Cashmere This will be a very good weight. The top four here are within 1 or 2 points of each other. Creighton surprised me by wrestling at 160 for freestyle so he could be anywhere. This could also be the year that Creighton puts all together at whatever weight he is at. 189: Jerid Sturman-Camyn- Klahowya Brad Becon-Lacenter JC George- Mt Baker Nick Mahugh- Colville Mike Thomas- Pullman Gerrett Raulston- Medical Lake The past three year you had state champions coming back at this weight. Not this year. Sturman probably could have wrestled at 171 but chose to be at the higher weight. He was also one of the only people to really give Evan Mattingly a tough match in 2a last year. More than likely someone will emerge from the pack. 215: Eric Burrows- Jenkins David Hopkims- Rochester Tim Gaston-Lacenter Michael Katzer- Hoquiam Dan Worley- Cashmere Jason Klein- Mt Baker Like 189, 215 has been dominated by returning state champions. Also like 189 there are a large number of quality wrestlers but no real standout. Burrows made the semis the hard way by winning two overtime matches. Hopkins and Worley were sophomores in what is usually a senior dominated weight. They both could be very good this year. 275: Jake Byl- Omak Alex King- Steilacoom Raymond Pauncy- Rochester Ricky Hall- Colville Josh Helm- Medical Lake Lucas Romero-Elma The top two weights the 2a are 112 and 275. Byl, King, and Pauncy are not only 3 of the best in 2a, they are three of the best in the state. Pauncy lost in overtime in the semis while both King and Byl lost to the state champion last year. Bly is smaller and more mobile to the much bigger Pauncy and King. Its possible that all three could be undefeated coming into the state tournament this year. Teams: I hate doing the traditional top 10 rankings. It really doesnt give you a good idea on who the top teams are. So here is sort of my own modified list. Favorite: Lakeside- With three possible finalist and two tough returning wrestlers Lakeside has the best base to build on a championship. They also have a history of producing top 4 finishers. The question will be do they have enough scorers at state. Challengers: Medical Lake- They have are seven returning state vets, many of them are going for their 3rd trip to state. The problems will be getting the finalists for the big points. Mt Baker- They also have seven returnees. What they dont have is the big scores of the past years. Still, every year they wrestle as hard as anyone in the state. They should never be underestimated. Rochester- With Pouncy, Eastman and Hopkins they have a chance to score a ton of points. I may even have under estimated them. Good Teams that can get a trophy: Colville-They were one of the surprise teams coming into state last year. Connell- They may end up being the top team in the traditionally tough CWAC. Ephrata- They probably are the top team from the CWAC. Hoquiam- They are going to have a break out year soon. |
