Girls Rock in first-ever wrestling tournament

Vashon’s Laurin Daniels, left, tries to escape from Puyallup’s Travis Hunter in a recent match at Vashon High School. Daniels will represent Vashon in the Girls Rock Tournament at VHS Dec. 27. Weigh-in is at noon and wrestling starts at 1 p.m.

Laurin Daniels usually wrestles — and holds her own — against boys when the Vashon High School wrestling team sees action.
On Dec. 27 the VHS junior will show what she can do against girls when the first-ever Girls Rock Tournament rocks the high school gym.
Vashon has long hosted The Rock Tournament, this year on Dec. 28, one of the best high school tournaments in the state.
Girls Rock is the first all-girl high school wrestling tournament in Washington state.
Tournament director Rick Sassara said he would prefer that wrestlers pre-register, but that all high-school girl wrestlers are welcome.
Weigh-in is at noon, with wrestling starting at 1 p.m.
A Canadian delegation is already committed and the team Daniels wrestles with during the free-style season is coming from Oregon.
Because girls wrestling is relatively new in Washington, Daniels and a few other Washington girls compete on the Portland-based team.
While Girls Rock is the first girls tournament in Washington, Michigan started the first girls state high school championships in 1997. A total of 120 girls competed in 10 weight divisions, according to a press release from Sassara.
Texas is also starting a girls state championship and Hawaii and suburban Chicago have women’s wrestling leagues.
Only one girl has ever made it to the Washington state wrestling tournament, Arielle Bradbury of Montesano. Bradbury also distinguished herself by winning one match against the boys.
Vashon has a long history of girl wrestlers, as does Foster and a few other Nisqually League schools, but the weight divisions seldom match up and the girls don’t often get to wrestle other girls.
Sassara was not a wrestler in his high school and college days, but he has become a wrestling fan since returning to Vashon to coach football.
To critics of women’s wrestling, Sassara points to the history of women’s basketball, which a relatively short time ago was played half-court, “Because girls didn’t have the stamina to play the ‘real’ game.”
“Also,” says Sassara, “having a daughter, I find it hard to really convince myself that she wouldn’t have as much drive, determination and fun in wrestling as I did when I played my sports in high school and college.”
