Evan Mattingly 2004 2A State Champ 189 Robbert Bennedsen 2004 2A State Champ 160 Laurin Daniels 2004 Girls Invitational Champ Nick Berry 2004 2A State Runner-Up 275 Paul Rudisky 2004 2A State Runner-Up 171 Josh Thorn 2004 2A 7th Place 145 Ben Staadeker 2004 2A 7th Place 125 Alex Gateman 2004 2A State Participant Kristen Quadratic Equation Kozak Girls Invitational Participant Vashon 3rd place in the 2A Team Race scoring a team record 112 points! Check Bikerman's View for his recap of the State Tournament. All and all it was a fantastic tournament with the team finishing 3rd and Robert championship at 160 sealing the win for...Othello! Evan Pinned his way through the finals for his second championship at 189. Paul and Nick both wrestled outstandingly, both finishing second in very tough divisions. And Josh and Ben both placing seventh in arguably two of the toughest weight classes in the entire state tournament. And Alex wrestled extremely well showing that he'll be a force to recon with in years to come. Great job guys! Laurin Daniels, in the Girls Invitational, pins her way to a first place finish. Sadly, I didn't see any of the girls matches (a three pins for Laurin I understand). Hopefully next year there will be a bit better organization on the floor and in the program. We're still looking for pictures guys and girls. I've put up all that I have received so far (thanks to Rik Forschmidt and Tracy Bennedsen) and will post as many as this web site can take. <------<<< Scoring at the State Level So, how does one score team points in a big tournament? Well I'm glad you asked. I put together (with some help) a breakdown of how it all works in 16 man bracket tournaments. I hope it helps. And yes, I know...you were told there would be no math... A win in the championship bracket is 2 points (advancement points) A win in the consolation bracket is 1 point (advancement points) win by fall, default, or dq is 2 more points win by technical fall is 1.5 more points win by major decision is 1 more point bye followed by a win is only 2 advancement points, no match points bye followed by a loss is no points Placing points in 16 man bracket: 1st = 16, 2nd = 12, 3rd = 9, 4th = 7, 5th = 5, 6th = 3, 7th = 2, 8th = 1 Bikerman seems to have this stuff calculating in his head all year. That's how he can do the team rankings. It also explains why some teams are ranked high and can be beaten in duels against lower ranked teams. Advancement points and being in the winners bracket are important, but pin points, tech fall points and major decision points have huge implications in team scoring at the State level. It's also why quality can trump quantity on some occasions and not in others (the duel example applies here). Usually, the bigger the tournament, the teams with the highest quality of wrestlers finish at the top. Some General Website Stuff: Bikerman is working on his recap of the Regional tourney in Montlake Terrace, which should be fairly comprehensive, as well as a state preview. I hope to get that up sometime today. Im going to try and update some of the pictures. I wish I could get all of them up, but we are limited by this &%$*#@$ web site. Which brings up a point. We will most likely be axing our association with eteams soon after State this year. Im planning on starting over with a site that you can actually easily upload and manage things like brackets, slide shows, Flash files, Adobe Acrobat pdf files basically make it functional, interesting to look at, and most importantly, easier and less expensive to manage. Information from around the state: I've been asked a couple of times to give some links to web sites that have information on other districts and regions. And, while Bikerman seems to have some bizarre skills at prognostication, he does rely on several pundits from around the state for opinions, results and general information on teams and individuals. So, over a few sparkling waters and a pizza, I sat down with Mike and ran through some of the sites he uses, and submits some content to. Here are the big three. If anyone knows of a sight that highlights the teams in the SW let me know. CWAC - This site is run by a Kiona-Benton guy that loves wrestling. He has a lot of great information on an extremely tough region, including his version of regional rankings.. Mike uses this information quite a bit in his ranking process. http://members.tripod.com/kibewrestling/CWAC/CWACFP.htm USA Everett Dave Gilbertson does a great job in posting any information he can find on High School results from all levels. Hes also done his own version of all classification rankings. http://members.tripod.com/usaeverett/index.htm WashingtonPreps This is the home of some of the most active message boards and a great place to go and ask questions to a vast at large community. It has great information on all High School sports programs, the dirt on recruiting, some articles, and rankings. http://washingtonpreps.rivals.com/default.asp _____________________________________________ The Scoreboard Duels: Vashon 50 Port Townsend 21 Vashon 49 Puyallup 21 Vashon 57 Eatonville 17 Vashon 54 Orting 18 Vashon 59 North Mason 9 Vashon 46 Klahowya 22 Vashon 42 Sequim 25 Vashon 60 Foster 19 Vashon 37 Steilacoom 30 Vashon goes undefeated in league duel matches! I wish I could site the author, but it's been posted several times on the internet. Make sure your children know that win or lose, scared or heroic, you love them, appreciate their efforts, and are not disappointed in them. This will allow them to do their best without fear of failure. Be the person in their lives they can look to for constant, positive encouragement. Try your best to be completely honest about your child's athletic capability, competitive attitude, sportsmanship and actual skill level. Be helpful but don't coach them on the way to the field, rink, pool, gym or track or on the way back, at breakfast, and so on. It is tough not to, but it is a lot tougher for children to be inundated with advice, pep talks, and often critical instruction. Teach them to enjoy the thrill of competition, to be "out there trying", to be working to improve their skills and attitudes. Help them develop the feel for competing, for trying hard, for having fun. Try not to re-live your athletic life through your children in a way that creates pressure. You fumbled too, you lost as well as won. You were frightened, you backed off at times, you were not always heroic. Don't pressure them because of your lost pride. Don't compete with the coach. If the coach becomes an authority figure, it will run from enchantment to disenchantment, etc. with your athlete. Don't compare the skill, courage, or attitudes of your children with other members of the team, at least within their hearing distance. Get to know the coach so that you can be assured that his/her philosophy, attitudes, ethics, and knowledge are such that you are happy to have your children under his/her leadership. Always remember children tend to exaggerate, both when praised and criticized. Temper your reaction and investigate before over-reacting. Make a point of understanding courage, and the fact that it is relative. Some of us can climb mountains, and are afraid to fight. Some of us will fight, but turn to jelly if a bee approaches. Everyone is frightened in certain areas. Explain that courage is not the absence of fear, but a means of doing something in spite of fear or discomfort. The job of the parent of an athletic child is a tough one, and it takes a lot of effort to do it well. It is worth all the effort when you hear your youngster say, "My parents really helped. I was lucky to have the parents I have, in this respect." History of Washington Wrestling from the WIAA |
