The Richmond Rattlers kicked off their 2009 season with a trip to Philadelphia, PA to play in an AAU regional event. A total of 5 Rattler teams made the trip. While much of the competition was well into their travel schedule, this was the first tournament of the season for each of our teams.
In the 10u division, the 10u Rattler black started slow but after about 1/2 a period of hockey, started to put it together. After falling behind early, the team went on to finish the tournament undefeated and earned a Gold medal.
In the 14u division, the 14u Rattler back team started slow as well, falling behind 0-4 in the first period to what amounted to a PA/NJ/NY all-star team but managed to fight hard and maintain a 1-4 loss. The team battled their way through the rest of the tournament for a welcomed rematch against the team that handed them a loss in the first game. The Rattlers came up short, with a 3-5 loss, and brought home the Silver medal.
In the 16u division, the Rattlers had both the Orange and Black team participate. The Black team made it to the championship game in the Gold division where it came up a little short with a 1-3 loss to a very talented team. The Orange team made it to the championship game in the Silver division also coming up a little short to a solid team. Both of our 16u teams came home with a well earned Silver medal.
In the 18u division, the Rattler Black team made the trip. After a successful round robin, the team headed into the championship. The team came up short but came home with the Silver medal.
So, 5 teams participated from the Rattlers. All playing their first tournament. ALL 5 teams played in the championship game. In total, the Rattlers brought home 1 GOLD and 4 SILVER medals.
