Homework idea
The following are the suggested routines for Bobcats to work at home to improve their individual ball skills:
-
Juggling: using valid soccer touches, keep the ball from touching the ground by repeatedly hitting the ball back into the air. If the ball does happen to touch the ground, recover control using valid soccer touches and continue to try to keep the ball in the air. Try to keep extending the number of consecutive touches without a ground. Try to incorporate a variety of touches (foot/thigh/chest/head; left/right).
-
7 Minute drill – this drill is done at the beginning of all Bobcat practices, and all the girls should know it by heart. Try doing the drill without looking at the ball. Put emphasis on becoming as smooth and fluid as possible with the moves. The goal of the drill is to become comfortable with all the moves, and doing the touches correctly is far more important than trying to doing them quickly.
-
Moves to beat an opponent – though the 7 minute drill has a sample of moves to be practiced, each girl needs to have a set of moves that she knows well so she can execute them on the field when the situation arises without hesitation. Select 3-4 moves that you feel you can learn (even ones you learn from friend/videos/internet) to execute well and practice them repeatedly. Learn to do them going left or right, off of a quick dribble, without looking at the ball. Make them so smooth and effortless that you can do them in a game to gain a real advantage.
-
Passing / receiving – find a wall, fence, or other flat vertical surface that you can strike a ball against. Strike the ball off of the surface and control the returning ball. Find specific points on the wall and try to hit that exact spot. Use different kinds of hits (instep for passing, laces for shots, outside of the foot for a square pass, even a heel drop pass). When you receive the ball, take a positive touch before striking again. Work on different distances from the wall, and different angles. Be sure to use both feet so that you can pass and receive with either.
-
Striking for power (shooting ) - using the proper technique (body over ball, strike with laces, ankle locked, follow-through), strike the ball with power to produce a low driven shot rising just a few inches over the turf and travelling very fast to the target. Work on controlling and placing the ball away from a pretend defender to a spot in the goal. Work on striking the ball rolling towards, rolling across, and off of a dribble. Be sure to practice both feet so you shoot with either.
-
Striking for power (free kicks / cross) – strike the ball with the intent of lifting the ball and carrying a long distance (free kick, goal kick, corner kick, long pass {cross/switch}). Lean away, striking the ball on the upswing, and follow-through. The result should be a long flighted ball that can travel big distances across the field. Practice from both a stationary ball and from a dribble. To simulate a cross, strike the ball off of a dribble to produce a cross (a long pass from wings that is lifted in the middle). Be sure to practice both feet.
-
7 minute drill (goalie) – do the special 7 minute drill intended for keepers. As with the field skills, technique and smoothness is more important than speed. Get confident with managing the various touches.
-
Releases (goalie) – pretend to secure the ball, then move quickly to release (punt, throw, or bowl). Work on distance and accuracy by picking a point far away to aim for.
