Coaching Philosophy
“Excellence is accomplished through deliberate actions, ordinary in themselves, performed consistently and carefully, made into habits, compounded together and added up over time.”
-Anson Dorrance, “The Vision of a Champion”
The mission is to help the girls entrusted to me develop to the fullest that their potential allows, both as athletes and young ladies. Accordingly, the highest premium will be placed upon respect, both in earning it from the girls, and showing it to the girls, to develop the bond needed to face the challenges put before us.
Vision:
The experience for these young ladies will be one of hard work, dedication, and discipline tempered with support and understanding. Specifically, the following fundamentals will be the hallmarks:
- Respect – the demands placed upon these young ladies and the effort they exhibit in response command our respect, and I will insist on each of us who interact with them to give them all that is due.
- Trust – each of us plays a role in the development of these young ladies. They will only respond to those whom they trust, and we must demonstrate to them that we sincerely have their best interest in our heart to continually deserve that trust.
- Sportsmanship – soccer is a noble sport revered throughout the world. We are to win with grace and lose with pride, and show our opponents every courtesy we would want for our own.
- Team Spirit – we will not step into any venue as individuals, but one single unit sharing a common bond. We are one, each of us having a role as part of the whole.
- Focus – Emphasis will be placed upon developing ball skills and fundamental tactics. Rather than running laps and long lectures, this will be accomplished by maximum contact with the ball in drills and games designed for their age.
- Professionalism – there is little that can be accomplished with yelling that can’t be handled more effectively through calm discourse. The tone of training and interaction during matches will be calm and assertive for all parties concerned.
- Creativity – each player will approach the game on her own terms based upon her skills and experience. The girls will be encouraged to take risks and given room to learn from mistakes.
- Opportunity – Development can not happen unless the girls are given a chance to perform. All the girls will be given opportunity to demonstrate their talents in matches.
- Fun – though there are valuable lessons to be gained, no child will continue to endorse any activity which does not contain some component of fun. Though our plan will contain high demands, at times we must yield and let girls be girls, and soccer be just a game.
Through this I will build an environment which will be at once challenging and rewarding and help your girl gain the most she possibly can. I look forward to sharing a positive experience with your daughter.
Team Goals:
- Enjoyment and Fun
- Technical, Tactical, and Physical Improvement
- Life lessons: working together, good sportsmanship regardless of winning or losing, hard work = achievement
- Building friendships
