Opening Day Parade and Ceremony

Hundreds of Regan Youth League players, parents, coaches, friends, and fans joined the annual parade down Centre and South Huntington streets on Saturday, April 27. It was a bittersweet morning, full of the promise of a new baseball season and the lingering tragedy of the Boston Marathon bombings.

With everyone gathered around the infield at Daisy 1, there was a moment of silence for the victims of the bombings, especially for 8-year-old Martin Richard, who should have been marching that day in the opening day parade for the Savin Hill Little League. Regan Youth League president Harry Smith then asked local police, firefighters, and other first responders to come out on the field to be recognized for their service.

The league also presented a monogrammed Regan Youth League jacket to Mayor Menino in recognition of his long standing support of the league. It was accepted by mayoral advisor and long-time Regan parent and coach Tony Barros. Pony Division player Brandon Alicea and AAA Softball player Aimee Styklunas read the Regan Youth League's Sportsmanship pledge in Spanish and English.

To close out the ceremony, and officially open the Regan Youth League 2013 season, elected officials Rep. Jeffrey Sánchez, City Councilors Félix Arroyo, Ayanna Pressley, and Matt O'Malley, Clerk Magistrate Maura Hennigan, and Tony Barros each threw out a ceremonial first pitch to players.

Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino recently announced the formation of The One Fund Boston as a relief fund to help individuals affected by last Monday's tragic events.  Donations to The One Fund Boston can be made online at onefundboston.org.
