In playoff action on Saturday, October 2nd the Slammers beat the Sea Dogs by a score of 7 to 2. Kevin Krolak and Parish Green hit solo homers and Eddie Peloza had a 2 run shot. Ron Hanrahan pitched 4 innings giving up 1 unearned run and Kevin Krolak tossed 3 giving up 1 run. For the Sea Dogs, Eldon Rosine took the loss as he hurled 4 innings giving up 5 runs (4 earned) and Kadin Mahmet pitched 2 innings and gave up 2 runs. Louie Kulchar and Ricky Diaz had the RBI's for the eliminated Sea Dogs.

In the second game of the day the Yaquis eliminated the Pale Hose by a score of 13 to 10 and had a good comeback to do it. The Pale Hose got out to a 7 to 1 lead behind a homer by Billy Delis, a 2 RBI single by Gary Grunhardt, another RBI hit from Delis, a 2 RBI single from Pete Molina, and Kevin Mclaughlin had a RBI hit to chase Yaquis starter Lee Gomez in the top of the second. Then in the bottom half of the second the Yaquis mounted their comeback as they scored 5 runs and knocked out starter Pete Molina. Grunhardt then came in and was greeted by back to back doubles by Jimmy Puplava and Joe Zega. The Yaquis then scored 2 in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, 2 in the fifth, and 2 more in the sixth that was highlighted by a 2 run homer by Ed Rozek. For the day, Frank Albarran, Jimmy Puplava, and Joe Zega all had 3 hits and skipper Henry Gonzales and Ed Rozek each had 2 hits apiece. For the Pale Hose, who saw their season come to an end, Gary Grunhardt had 3 hits including a solo homer in the 3rd and also was charged with the loss. Jimmy Puplava, in relief of Lee Gomez picked up the win and Frankie Albarran got the save.

In the 3rd game of the day the Rippers ripped the Hammond Red Sox by a score of 16 to 4. The Red Sox put a scare into the Rippers and starter Bill "Chili" Kocinski as the Sox Jerome Eddings hit a 3 run homer and Eric Johnson followed that up with a solo shot as Hammond jumped out to a 4 to 0 lead. But the Rippers calmly came back behind the smoking hot bat of Jimmy "Emmo" Emerson who had 2 huge hits and 4 RBI's. Kocinski then settled down to pitch 3 other solid innings and Jimmy Galvan tossed 1 as the Rippers eliminated the Red Sox. Ryan Anquiano took the loss for the Sox.

On Sunday,October 3rd in playoff action, the Rippers scorched the Slammers 18 to 3. Ronnie Hanrahan was victimized by his teammates as they committed numerous miscues and errors as the Slammers title hopes came to an end. Jimmy "Emmo" Emerson continued his hot hitting as did the rest of the Rippers as they now advance to the championship series. Skipper Ken Elbaor pitched 2 innings and Ray Mirabel hurled 3 for the victorious Rippers. Ron Hanrahan took the loss for the Slammers whose season came to an end but not before setting at least some kind of record for slamming home runs at a record pace.

In the second game of the day, the Yaquis upset the 1st place Hammond Marlins by a score of 10-3. It was a close game for 4 innings as the game was tied at 3 behind solo homers from Julio Castro and Jimmy Puplava. Then in the top of the fifth with 2 outs and on a 3 and 2 count Jimmy "Pep" Puplava hit his second homer of the day this one a grand slammer to right that would have been out of any park including Yellowstone. The Yaquis then salted the game away with 3 more runs in the 7th, 2 of which came off the bat of Joe Zega who homered. Frank Albarran started and pitched 3 1/3 innings. Jose Haro came in to pitch 3 2/3 innings and shut down the Marlins as he picked up the win in relief. Don Ward pitched 4 innings and Kevin Driscoll tossed a couple of innings before he was tagged with the loss. The Hammond Marlins season came crashing down to a sudden end but they had many a highlight to remember for a long time for this team from across the state line. So now it's on to the championship series which features some old old rivalries. It's Kenny against Henry. Get your tickets now.

 Rippers 17 Yaquis 4
 Saturday,October 9th
Game One- The Rippers blasted the Yaquis in game 1 of the championship series by a score of 17 to 4. After spotting the Yaquis a 2 to 0 lead in the 1st inning, Rippers starter Bill "Chili" Kocinski settled down and tossed a quality game the rest of the way. In the Rippers half of the 1st inning, Rick Doubek and Jimmy Taylor had back to back RBI doubles and then Ray Mirabel and Antonio Underwood had RBI singles. The Rippers then blew the game wide open with a 7 run second highlighted by a grand slam home run off the bat of Rick Doubek. After a scoreless 3rd the Rippers then scored 6 in the fourth inning as Ray Mirabel belted a 3 run homer. Bill Kocinski got the win for the Rippers and Frank Albarron took the loss for the Yaquis. Kocinski, Rick Doubek, Jimmy Taylor, and Ray Mirabel all had 2 hits each and Ron Kirk, Mike Cody, and Jimmy "Emmo" Emerson reached base safely twice each. Jimmy Puplava, Frank Albarron, and Joe Zega had RBI's for the Yaquis.

Yaquis 9 Rippers 8
 Sunday,October 10th
Game Two- This game started much like the first game as the Rippers were having their way with the Yaquis. The Yaquis were trailing 7 to 3 and not looking very good as they were guilty of some very shoddy fielding when they suddenly mounted their comeback. They scored 2 runs in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th and capped off the comeback with 3 more in the 6th with veteran Steve Barba getting the big blow with what turned out to be the game winning run scoring double. Jimmy "Pep" Puplava started and pitched 3 innings and Jose Haro finished up with 4 solid innings to get the win. Puplava also had 3 hits with Ed Rozek, Jose Haro, and Steve Barba having 2 hits each. It sets up what should be a good final game for the fledgling leagues first season.

The Yaquis Win The Championship With An Exciting Game On A Cool And Windy Day. Great Fan Support Propels The Yaquis To A 7 To 5 Win OverThe Rippers.
Game 3-The Yaquis won the first championship in the New 30's Hegewisch League with a 7 to 5 win over the Rippers in game 3 of the best of 3 series on a cold and blustery Saturday, October 16th at the Hegewisch field. The Yaquis wasted no time as they got out to a 2 to 0 in the first inning off Rippers starter Bill "Chili" Kocinski as leadoff man Ed Rozek and Jimmy Puplava hit back to back homers. The Rippers got one run back in their half of the first as Jimmy Taylor singled and then stole second and scored on a Kocinski base hit. The Rippers then potentially took themselves out of a big 2nd inning as Yaquis starter Frank Albarran picked off the Rippers Antonio Underwood from second base and the Yaquis catcher Lee Gomez gunned down the Rippers Rob Edinger trying to steal. The Yaquis scored one in the third to make it 3 to 1 as Rozek and Puplava both walked after 2 were out, Rozek scored on a base hit by Joe Zega. The Rippers then came back to tie it in their half of the third as Ron Kirk doubled, then Mike Cody walked, and after Ray Elbaor struck out for the second out of the inning, Jimmy Galvan singled to load the bases, then Jimmy Taylor drove in 2 runs with his second hit of the day and the game was knotted at 3. The Rippers took the lead in the fifth as both Tom Warren and Jimmy "Emmo" Emerson singled and after the Yaquis turned a nifty 3-6 double play on Ron Kirk, Mike Cody then walked, and with Warren on third and Cody on first, Ray Elbaor's duck snort single to left scored Warren, then Jimmy Galvan doubled to score Cody to make the score 5 to 3 Rippers. The Yaquis just wouldn't die as manager Henry Gonzales led off the top of the sixth with a double against reliever Jimmy Galvan, Ed Rozek followed with a hit sending Gonzales to third, Rozek then stole second, and after Jimmy Puplava was called out on strikes, Joe Zega came through with a clutch 2 RBI single to tie the game at 5, and even though Zega was hobbling around on a bad foot, he still managed to steal second, Frank Albarran then delivered an RBI double to put the Yaquis up 6 to 5, and after a passed ball sent Albarran to third, Steve Barba came through with another clutch RBI hit to put the Yaquis up 7 to 5. After giving up 2 runs in the fifth, Yaquis reliever Lee Gomez (who caught the first 4 innings) settled down to retire the side in the sixth, and in the seventh, he got Underwood to fly out to right fielder Larry Triplett, he then struck out Rob Edinger for the second out, and on a 2-2 count to Tom Warren reached back for everything he had left and struck Warren out on a high hard one and the Yaquis had their championship. The Yaquis fans must be applauded because they willed them to the championship. This gang of 20 some people were out there for all 3 games. They brought posters and placards and any kinds of signs that they could find to cheer their boys on. The cheering that they gave truly made a big difference in this series. Congratulations to the Yaquis as they came back from a 1-0 deficit to win the series. Congratulations also go out to Manager Henry Gonzales who celebrated his second championship in 10 days. Henry also made some good strategic moves to help his ballclub win it all. The Yaquis got to the championship with wins over the Pale Hose and the Hammond Marlins. Congratulations also go out to the Rippers and Manager Ken Elbaor who led his team to the championship series with an 11-3 regular season record and playoff wins over the Hammond Red Sox and the Slammers. All in all it was a great first season for the new league and we are working on making next season even better. We hope to see you all at the Banquet on Saturday, October 30th at 6pm at Just Jim's. But if for some reason you can't make it, we want you back next summer to play the greatest game on the planet, BASEBALL, of course.
