Safety should always be the first priority!

League of American BicyclistWe are looking for cyclists or wanna be cyclists and coaches.  Specifically we see the best way to establish growth in this sport is to organize at the high school level. We will be working in the fall to see if we can make this transition.  Give us a call. 952-201-2585 (Guy Beck) or skyguy2b@comcast.net

River Valley Junior Cycling is now a member of the League of American Bicyclists. It is clear that if we are going to grow the sport we need to advocate for changes for increasing safety.  http://www.bikeleague.org/

It has been an unusual  year in 2009:

1. I started a new job and therefore have more miles away from town vs in town.

2. The economy has increased prices of entry level bikes. Weariness of sponsors increased.

3. We have focused on addressing some safety issues within the county/city.

4. We have only done a few events this year: Ironman(rain, cold, rain) and the Jordan Valley Bike Tour (sun, no wind, awesome). We did the 50 mile Tour De Bun in Montgomery. We did not do the Tour de cure this year.

Review of 2008

1. Ironman:  Ryan, Rachel and Guy rode the 30 miles and it was about 30 degrees when we started.  Sorry no photos the camera froze!

2. United Way Ride . It was an absolutely gorgeous 22 mile ride(my odometer read 25 miles).  Brittany and Guy Rode.  Also made the Mankato Free Press.  http://www.mankatofreepress.com/archivesearch/local_story_139014852.html

3. Tour De Cure completed.

4. Jordan Valley bike tour completed.

5. Tour De Bun 50 mile bike ride

Why Road Cycling (Bicycling)?

  • Cycling is a unique sport that offers many events: Road events, criteriums, time trials, track, CycloCross, numerous non-competitive rides and Mountain Biking.
  • USA Cycling already has a platform of State, Region and National races for juniors.
  • Youth have too few sport competitive alternatives. Competition for gym or field time is fierce. Cycling allows a wide range of areas to use for training.
  • Builds individual and group skills while seeing accomplishments. A 15 year old completed a 45 mile ride this year.  How about starting the year at an average speed of 12 mph and ending the year with a 30 mile ride at 18 mph average?
  • Cycling is a life long sport.
  • Cycling (bicycling) is a growing sport in the US. Publicity at events is not fully tapped. For instance the Minnesota Ironman in Lakeville draws over 5,000 riders and rides through Lakeville, Prior Lake, and Jordan.
