RHODE ISLAND HAWKS CAPTURE NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
May 29, 2007
The Rhode Island Hawks AAU Basketball 12 year-old boys team finished their season with a 33-2 record, winning 7 of the 8 tournaments in which they competed. Among those titles was the 2007 New England AAU Championship. The Hawks won six straight games in a 48-hour period, outlasting MYCW (Mass) 48-36 in the championship game.
The Hawks also captured the Hoop Group’s Providence JamFest earlier in the season, becoming only the 3rd Rhode Island team to ever win the prestigious tournament (the first since Providence United’s 14’s in 2002). In the final, the Hawks topped Massachusetts state champion Mass Destruction 62-54. The loss turned out to be Mass Destruction’s only loss of a 31-1 season, as they recently captured the Division 2 AAU National Championship.
Among the other tournaments the Hawks won were the Northeast USA Hoops Festival in Albany, NY and the Middlesex Magic Tip-Off Tournament in Boston, where they were awarded free team sneakers for winning the championship. They also reached the finals of the Naismith Hall of Fame Tournament in Springfield, where they earned the right to play in the championship game on the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Center Court.
The team was coached by Marc Bayha and Jeff Kurbec. Team members included Charles Correa, Zdahmond Dale, Nathanial Dogon, Tom Hunt, Joshua Jones, Kevin McCain, Max Motroni, Scott Peterson, Jerelle Washington, and Jarrid Witherspoon.
