Mission Statement
The mission of the Region B Developmental League is to create a highly competitive environment in which selected 94-95 boys soccer teams in north and central Florida may compete. Although the league seeks to be comprised of the most successful teams in Region B, the priority of the league is be an association of teams that strongly believe in positive coaching, player development, character development, and sportsmanship above winning, and, above all, the belief that fostering of friendships and mutual respect among players, coaches, and parents is the most important benefit of youth soccer.
Founding of the League
The 94-95 Region B Developmental League was founded fall 2006 through an association of eight teams affiliated with the Greater Central Florida Youth Soccer League and the Brevard Youth Soccer League and North Florida League. The eight teams included U11 boys teams from Three Lions, Melbourne, Ocala, Orange County, East Orange Soccer, Gainesville Soccer Alliance, Ponte Verde & Jacksonville. The alliance of these eight teams emerged out of a mutual desire to create a league with the highest level of competition in Florida and an even higher level of mutual respect between coaches, players, and parents.
Admission to the League
Teams may be admitted to the league through an application process each June. Applications must be submitted to the league champion no later than June 30. The league shall be comprised of 8 teams to be determined each year by the current teams based on the number and quality of applicants and the number of potential openings. Openings may be created by either the voluntary or involuntary departure of a team from the previous seasons league, or the expansion of the league. Applications will be voted on by the previous years teams. Teams will be accepted into the league based on the qualities sited in the mission statement. Teams that receive excessive cards or exhibit repeated behavior that is not within the mission of the league may be removed at any time via a vote of the participating teams.
While the admission of teams to the league has the appearance of being somewhat subjective, it is an approach that leads to long term player development. Many competitive soccer leagues use a relegation system to create highly competitive groupings of teams, where teams must win in order to remain in or advance to the higher level. While mathematically tractable, this methodology can lead to win at all costs coaching and playing styles.[1],[2],[3], The novel approach to this league seeks to develop a highly competitive league while maintaining a family and player friendly environment that will assure the long term development of youth soccer players. While the team selection process is less mathematically tractable than a classical relegation system, the league seeks to retain the top teams in the region without sacrificing sportsmanship or other important qualities that belong in youth soccer.
