The Riverside Community College Tigers won their 3rd straight Orange Empire Conference Championship. In continuing to keep the local talent competing and here, close to home, they have are seeking their 2nd straight California Junior College State Championship!

The RCC men’s track team dominated the Orange Empire Conference Championships with a 300 plus point performance for the 3rd straight year. The Tigers had nine individual and 2 relay conference champions, and 54 individuals qualify to the Southern California Finals, which will take place next Saturday (May 2) a Mt. Sac. In order to qualify to So Cal Prelims the athletes need to place in the top six in the Conference championship in their event(s). The 4x100 (Charles Smith, Tommy Curry, Giorgio Bryant, Daniel Auberry) cruised to an easy victory with a 41.13 clocking (they ran 40.5 two weeks ago). The result in the 4x400 (Ernest Rickett, Tommy Curry, Sam Jeter and Mark Pilchur) was similar with the Tigers running easily to victory with a time of 3:16 (their best this season has been 3:12). With a 6.0 head wind Daniel Auberry (Alta Loma) won the 100 meters in 11.0, and three other RCC athletes also qualified. Auberry also took the 200 meters in a strong head wind running 21.60. He was also joined by three other Tigers to qualify to So Cal. Auberry has run 10.4 in the 100 meters and 20.8 in the 200 meters so far this season In the 400 meters Mark Pilchur (Eisenhower) and Ernest Rickett (San Gorgonio) ran personal bests clocking 47.54 and 47.82 respectively. Reigning state champion in the 800 meters, Stephan May of Great Oak won the 800 by 3 seconds over his nearest rival, clocking 1:54. In the 1500 meters Jeff Pelarde (Poly) and Alberto Camacho (Desert Hot Springs) easily qualified with 2nd (4:05) and third (4:06) place finishes. In a tactical 5000 meter race Pelarde (15:46) and Jose Lopez (Rancho Verde-15:47) easily qualified to So Cal. In the 110HH and 400IH the Tigers went 1-2 with Sam Jeter (King-15.44 and 52.71) winning both and Cameron Stepney (San Gorgonio-15.52 and 54.04) finishing close behind. In the Pole Vault, Eric Watley (Upland) and Chase Rodgers (Temecula Valley) jumped 14’6” to take 4th and 5th place, and Tyler Wallace (Chaparral) jumped 15’0” take 2nd overall. Cody Lynn (Paloma Valley) had a personal best of 140’0” in the discus to take 4th. Four Tigers qualified in the triple jump with George Bui leading the way with a 2 foot personal best (46’5”) to take second. Last week Giorgio Bryant (Bossier) won the long jump (24’3”). Wayne West (Arlington) took the high jump (6’8”) and Daniel Cooper (Chino Hills) won the 3000 meter steeple chase in 10:04. “I am extremely pleased with how the team competed at the Conference Championships. We had a lot of qualifiers to So Cal, which is very important in helping us achieve our goal of back to back state titles.”- Coach Jim McCarron
