Rockland County Challenger Little League: Welcome

Welcome to Rockland County Challenger Little League!

The Challenger Division of Little League is a program for mentally and physically challenged youth, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. More than the skills of baseball learned through the experience, the value of the Little League Challenger Division is found in the proven therapeutic and socialization benefits of participating in sports, the strengthening of participants’ self-esteem, the opportunities to mainstream into other divisions of play, and the disciplines of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play, which are hallmarks of the Little League program. The Little League Challenger Division provides the framework so Little League programs may offer a structured, athletic activity for all youth in their communities. Playing with the same equipment on the same fields, Challenger Division participants have the opportunity to experience the joys of pulling together as a team, being cheered, and earning awards for their achievements.

History: Rockland County Challenger Little League founded in 1993. Our first game was played on June 6th at Suffern Little League’s Cucolo Field. Since 1993 over 1,000 children have participated in our program.

Mission: To provide children with special needs the opportunity to succeed at playing baseball in a program structured to their abilities.

Goal: The most fundamental goal of Challenger is to give everyone a chance to play, regardless of limitations.

Eligibility: Any boy or girl ages 4-18, or up to age 21, if still enrolled in a school program, with a physical or developmental challenge that prevent them from participating in traditional Little League may participate in Challenger.

When and Where:  Our season runs from the beginning of April through the end of June.  Games are typically played on Sundays throughout Rockland County.

Teams:  Unlike traditional little league our teams are based on ability, not age.  We currently have 10 teams and 4 levels structured to the players' abilities.  We offer both t-ball and coach pitch levels of play.  Each team typically plays 2 to 3 innings and the games last approximately one to two hours.

Buddy Program:  Our buddy program starts at age 12. Buddies assist Challenger players according to their needs. This may include helping a player bat or field the ball, pushing a wheel-chair bound child around the bases or motivating a player. The buddy program allows parents to take a much deserved break and cheer for their child from the stands.
