SAFE!

Base Running:
Some players are fast and some players are slow, and you can be a good base runner even if you are not very fast.

So heads up!

Knowing when to run and when not to run is more important than being fast. Of course it's best if you are both fast and smart in your base running.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BASE RUNNER AND HOW TO SLIDE..

A good base runner:

1. Know your team's plays & signs.
2. Know how many outs.
3. Know when to tag up on a fly ball.
4. Check for a sign before each pitch.
5. Find and locate the baseball before leaving the base.

Get your sign or no sign, check the defense, and be ready to run and get a good "JUMP" on the crack of the bat. Don't get doubled off the base or watch out for the line drive catch with less than two outs...

How to Slide!
When in doubt...slide! You work very hard to get on base, don't worry about getting your uniform dirty!

If you are not sure where the ball is on a close play you slide!... It's better to be "safe" than out!

1. Don't slow down your run before you slide.
2. Start your slide before you get to the base.
3. Keep your extended foot tagging leg knee bent a bit to avoid injury.
4. Keep your hands up above your body.
5. Tag and stay on the base.

You can call time out after your slide to fix the base and brush yourself off.

Practice Tip: Use a large flat cut of regular cardboard. place it on the grass and slide away!
