WHITMAN BEATS ROCKLAND 8 to 2

A FITTING END TO THE SEASON. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO GEL AS A TEAM WITH THE EARLY INJURIES, THE LACK OF PREPARATION OR COMMITMENT BY RETURNING PLAYERS, AND THE CONSTANT THIEVERY OF PLAYERS BY AAU. IT'S HARD TO UNDERSTAND THAT LOSING FOUR PLAYERS FROM 2008 WOULD MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE. MY HATS OFF TO THEM AGAIN FOR A GREAT 2008.  WE'LL TRY IT AGAIN IN 2010.

Wednesday, July 8
PLYMOUTH BEATS ROCKLAND ( 11 to 1 )

SIX ERRORS, TWO WILD PITCHES, THREE PASS BALLS, GIVING UP SEVEN HITS, ONLY PRODUCING FIVE HITS, ENOUGH SAID

Monday, July 6
SANDWICH SQUEAKS BY ROCKLAND 7 to 6
The trip across the Sagamore Bridge to Sandwich Legion was full of excitement for Rockland Post 147, who has beaten Post 188 the last two meetings. The game started out in favor of Rockland once again, with Cory Comeau and Nick Ayala both hitting singles and scoring on a solid single from Steve Gardner. The second inning was just as explosive with a two run home run from Josh Sullivan and a two run home run from Jeff Gardner. The only problem from the second inning on was the lack of any more runs to put the game away. The Sandwich Post 188 chipped away at Rockland starter Cory Comeau, and in the bottom of the second inning scored four runs to bring Post 188 within two runs of Rockland. Comeau settled down for the next three innings, despite a couple of errors, by the Rockland infield. In the bottom of the sixth inning, two singles and two walks ( one intentional), plus a couple of wild pitches, allowed Post 188 to grab the lead, seven to six. The bottom of the sixth also was complicated by one very questionable call, as well as the top of the seventh, both of which impacted the outcome of this one. The loss stood, regardless of the good effort by Rockland against the number one team in the District.

Sunday, July 5
KINGSTON LEGION BEATS ROCKLAND 8 to 5
Kingston Legion  8 , Rockland Post 147   5

Rockland Legion Baseball Post 147 was host to the Kingston Legion ball team this past Sunday night. Rockland, still struggling for a win, sent Josh Sullivan to the mound in hopes for a win, to break the bad cycle they are in. Sullivan struggled with close to seventy pitches over the first three innings, and has not been sharp as of late. In the fourth inning Rocklands' defense was poor to say the least, which added to the pitch count for Sullivan. Four errors in the top of the fourth inning led to seven runs for Kingston, which once again forced Post 147 to play catch-up baseball. Rockland actually had a one to nothing lead in the third inning, but the UN-LEGION like play allowed Kingston that one big inning. The over worked Post 147 team, due to the shrinking roster, was forced to play some ballplayers in positions that they have not played in years. To their credit, despite the position changes, Rockland battled back, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, loaded the bases with three straight singles. John Mulready, Cory Comeau, and Nick Ayala all reached base and were driven home by a very loud single to deep left center by Matt Losciuto. Losciuto was thrown out at second, trying to stretch the single to a double, and the Rockland rally ended shortly after that, along with the game. Post 147 out hit their opponent again, but still came up short in the end, because the hits were not always timely. The errors continue to haunt this teams good hitting and pitching efforts. Nick Ayala and Matt Losciuto both went 2 for 4 at the plate for Rockland, and Matt Losciuto did a great job behind the plate for the injured Scott Stohlberg.

Friday, July 3
HINGHAM WINS AGAIN 5 to 2
Hingham Post 120 visited Rockland Veterans Memorial Stadium, just before the Fourth of July, but with less fireworks than at Cronin Field in Hingham. The beating Rockland Post 147 took from Post 120 wasn't to be repeated this time. Mike Mallar, the Rockland starter, in only his second start, in his first year as a Legion pitcher,managed to keep Hingham off balance most of the night,surrendering only five runs on eight hits.This was better than an earlier appearance by Mallar against Norwell this season. The problem once again for Mallar and Rockland was run support. As in the Norwell game where Post 147 only scored one run, again in this Hingham game they could only muster two runs. The baffling part is that Rockland had eleven hits,to Hinghams' eight hits.Rockland scored in the bottom of the seventh inning when Steve Machaby singled followed by Cory Comeau's single, which just scooted past the Hingham first baseman. A coaching blunder had Machaby thrown out at third, trying to stretch the base runner to third. Comeau moved to second on a pass ball and later scored on a Josh Sullivan triple. Sullivan scored on a Nick Ayala single, and that would do it for Rockland.Post 147 fought to the end, but was another victim of the playoff bound Hingham squad.On a good note Steve Machaby went 2 for 3, Josh Sullivan went 3 for 4, Cory Comeau went 2 for 4, and A.J. Roache came back from a hamstring tear to pitch the seventh inning for Rockland.

Thursday, July 2
WAREHAM BEATS ROCKLAND 4 to 1

THE TRIP SOUTH TO WAREHAM PROVED TO BE ANOTHER TOUGH ONE FOR THE ROCKLAND RAIDERS. THE WAREHAM POST 220 IS A PLAYOFF CONTENDER AND ALWAYS A STRONG OPPONENT. ROCKLAND POST 147 SCORED FIRST WHEN CORY COMEAU DREW A WALK AND SCORED ON A TRIPLE BY MATT LOSCIUTO, BUT THAT WOULD BE IT FOR ROCKLAND. WAREHAM KEPT PICKING AWAY AND EVENTUALLY SCORED FOUR RUNS FOR THE LEAD THAT STUCK. CORY COMEAU, THE ROCKLAND STARTER, PITCHED WELL, BUT COULD GET NO RUN SUPPORT, AND WAS THE TOUGH LUCK LOSER. THE ROCKLAND TEAM IS STILL WITHOUT SOME KEY PLAYERS, AND THAT HAS PUT A STRAIN ON THE REMAINING PLAYERS AND COACHING STAFF THIS YEAR.

Sunday, June 28
DENNIS POST 488 BEATS ROCKLAND AS SLIDE CONTINUES
DENNIS POST 488 == 8 vs. ROCKLAND POST 147 == 7

Rockland Legion Baseball Team Post 147, took the hour and fifteen minute ride to Dennis Legion Post 488 at Cape Cod Tech on a dreary Sunday evening. Nine ballplayers, with no substitutes available was the situation for Rockland this day. Post 147 hopped on the Dennis starter quickly in the top of the first inning, posting four runs on five hits, with one Dennis error. Josh Sullivan, Matt Losciuto, and Steve Gardner all hit singles, while John Mulready and Derek Smith hit doubles, to cap off the attack. Rockland increased their lead in the top of the fourth inning, when Jeff Gardner reached base by working a walk and Josh Sullivan singled again. Sullivan would score on a fielders choice off the bat of Steve Gardner, to put the score at six to three in favor of Rockland. Post 488 chipped away all evening and eventually got to within one run at six to five. Derek Smith, the Rockland starter, did an excellent job as a starter, but has not been in the rotation consistently this year, so after five and one-third innings the pitch count demanded that Rockland make the change. Joe Lennon took over for Smith and could not hold the lead. Rockland scored one more time in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Jeff Gardner was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a hit and run play, stole third on his own, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Losciuto, to tie the game at seven. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Dennis Legion Post 488, pushed across the winning run with a close play at the plate. An error in the bottom of the seventh had taken its toll once again, just as it had done in the Brockton game, on Friday night. Rockland was the tough luck loser as their losing streak continues. Josh Sullivan for Rockland continues to swing a hot bat, going 2 for 4, and Derek Smith has also come alive at the plate with two doubles in this game, for a 2 for 4 day.

Saturday, June 27
NORWELL SCHOOLS ROCKLAND ( 9 to 1 )

 NORWELL POST 192 == 9 // ROCKLAND POST 147 == 1

Norwell Legion Post 192 came to Rockland Stadium on a humid Saturday afternoon and played better than a low seeded team in Zone 10. Mike Mallar, the Rockland starter let up one run early, but settled down and pitched well, over three of his five innings. The problem for Post 147 was no run support for Mallar. Rockland in one of its more embarrasing games was held to only one hit, by Norwell pitcher, Mike Moran. Moran completely baffled Rockland and notched 12 strike outs to his credit. Norwell also put up six runs against Mike Mallar and three runs against reliever Steve Gardner, giving Mallar his first loss in as many starts, and pushing Rockland further down in the District 10 standings. This was one to forget !!!!

Friday, June 26
BROCKTON BEATS ROCKLAND IN A TIGHT ONE (3 to 2)
JUNE 26, 2009;
BROCKTON POST 35 == 3 vs. ROCKLAND POST 147 == 2

        Rockland Legion Post 147 traveled to Brockton, Edgars playground, to do battle once again with Brockton Post 35. What used to be a joke of a game in the early 2000's for Rockland, has turned into quite the contest for both teams. Rocklands' Cory Comeau held Brockton scoreless for three innings, while Brocktons' Mike Paul held Rockland off balance for six innings. A pitchers duel in the true sense, Rockland loaded the bases twice in the first two innings and Mike Paul escaped with no runs scored. Comeau was pitching his best game, and with one man on, one pitch just hung up a little to high and Craig Stewart crushed a home run to left for Brockton. Down two nothing Brockton pitcher Mike Paul became even tougher to score on.
The scrappy group from Rockland never gave up, and in the top of the seventh inning, with Josh Sullivan on first, Jeff Gardner on the first pitch, hit a 350 foot home run to tie the game at two. Cory Comeau, in the bottom of the seventh, got the first two outs, but Joe Higgins singled and Shane Varnadore hit a ball just fair down the line, creating a tough play for Rockland. A throwing error allowed Higgins to score the winning run for Brockton, and Rockland was the tough luck loser this time. Comeau  pitched a great game for Rockland Post 147, with five strike outs and allowing only five hits. Josh Sullivan went 2 for 3 , and Jeff Gardner got his first Legion home run.

ROCKLAND LOSSES TO HINGHAM (18 TO 4)

Rockland versus Hingham in Hingham was deja-vu for Rockland. Rockland scored first when Josh Sullivan singled then moved to second on a pass ball, and scored on a Matt Losciuto single. Hingham tied the game in the bottom of the first inning and broke it open in the bottom of the second and third innings. Hingham scored 18 times with 15 hits, which included 3 home runs, the same amount as last time these two teams met in Hingham. The scrappy group from Rockland hung in and battled, but could not get the rally they needed. The injury toll and players choosing other things, as more important has depleted the Rockland team, and its effect was felt tonight. On a good note Matt Losciuto went 2 for 3 at the plate with one of the hits being a 375 foot home run, and Josh Sullivan also went 2 for 3 for the good guys.

Wednesday, June 24
LOSS TO BARNSTABLE 11 to 2

DOWN TOO MANY PLAYERS TO MAKE THINGS WORK SOMETIMES. PLAYERS OUT OF THEIR NORMAL POSITIONS, NO OPTIONS LEFT AT TIMES. VERY PROUD OF THE PLAYERS THAT SHOW UP, BUT SHOWING UP IS NOT ENOUGH. WE NEED TO PLAY ERROR FREE BALL OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES. 2 NICE HITS BY STEVE MACHABY, 7 STRIKEOUTS FOR PITCHER JOSH SULLIVAN, GREAT BUNT BY JEFF GARDNER.

8 RUNS CAUSED BY ERRORS, THE SCORE SHOULD HAVE BEEN 3 TO 2

NOT SETTING AND THROWING, NOT CATCHING, INDECISIONS, OVER STRIDING ON A SLOW PITCHER , ALL LEAD TO A WASTE OF YOUR TIME AND OURS

WE ARE NO 3 & 5 WITH FIVE GAMES IN FIVE DAYS

A MORE FOCUSED TEAM BETTER SHOW UP OR THE SEASON WILL BE OVER THIS WEEK

Friday, June 19
ROCKLAND BEATS BROCKTON IN A PITCHING DUEL 3 to1
Brockton Post 35 Legion Baseball, one of the winning-est franchises in District 10, came to play Rockland Post 147, in what turned out to be quite the pitching duel. Rockland pitcher Josh Sullivan surrendered a run in the first inning, but settled down nicely for the next six innings. Brockton Post 35 pitcher, Mark Duhamel, right out of the gate, had Rockland hitters off balance and protected his one run lead for five innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning a game changing play took place for Rockland. Rockland rookie catcher, Scott Stohlberg, did his job, sprinting up the first base side to protect against any advance of a player with an over throw to first. On this ground ball, the throw flew past the Rockland first baseman, and the Brockton hitter on seeing that made a turn toward second base. Stohlberg slid and trapped the ball from going out of bounds and fired a strike to first, catching the Post 35 player off base for the out. This play dashed the hope of Brockton getting another player in scoring position, and plating one more run, to push Rockland deeper in the hole. Rockland, struggling against pitcher Duhamel, caught a break in the sixth inning when Brockton was forced to change pitchers due to a high pitch count. The new Brockton pitcher, Matt Sliney, was a welcome sight to Rockland hitters, since they could not figure out Duhamel. Matt Losciuto led off the inning with a single, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Machaby. John Mulready drew a walk, followed by Scott Stohlberg, who slapped a seeing eye single down the third base line, scoring Losciuto with the tying run. Mulready moved to third on the single, which set the stage for a squeeze play, with only one out. Jeff Gardner at the plate, and John Mulready at third executed a perfect squeeze, and Rockland took the lead two to one. Derek Smith came to the plate next and drove a double into the left center field gap, scoring Stohlberg with a cushion run. Josh Sullivan still on the mound for Rockland, closed out the game by striking out the side in the seventh inning. Sullivan notched seven strikeouts, and improved his record to two wins and one loss. Rocklands' record is now 3 wins and 4 losses as they fight through this injury riddled season. Derek Smith went 2 for 3 at the plate, while Brocktons' Joe Higgins went 3 for 4 and scored their only run.

Wednesday, June 17
DUXBURY WINS 5 - 3

On the road again, Rockland Post 147 visited the newly reformed Duxbury Legion team.Rockland struck first and looked like they were going to have a good night, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.Cory Comeau drew a walk to start the game, and Nick Ayala doubled, putting runners on second and third. Josh Sullivan doubled next scoring Comeau and Ayala, but the inning ended with bases loaded, and Rockland sqaundered an opportunity .Duxbury scratched their way back, scoring one in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the third,to gain control of the game. Once ahead, Duxbury pitching allowed only one Rockland hit the rest of the game. Rockland starter Cory Comeau had a good outing, but did allow seven hits, combined with a balk to score a run, and some pass balls, creating another tough come from behind scenario.The comeback fell short as Post 147 squeezed one more run in the seventh inning, but could not generate any more. Rocklands' Nick Ayala went 2 for 4 at the plate, while Rockland had seven fly outs to limit their chances.

DUXBURY LEGION = 5 , ROCKLAND LEGION = 3

Tuesday, June 16
ROCKLAND POST 147 LOSES TO WAREHAM POST 220 (6 to 5)

Rockland Post147 baseball team had yet to win a home game, but their hopes were high with Josh Sullivan on the mound. Wareham Post 220 however had a different idea of what would happen although. Wareham scored four runs on three hits and two errors, completely out playing Rockland at the start. Post 147 to its credit once again battled back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, on four singles from players, Nick Ayala, Josh Sullivan, Cory Comeau and Derek Smith. Rockland tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second inning, after Wareham pitching allowed two walks, and Josh Sullivan tripled, scoring two runs, and scoring on a Matt Losciuto single. Rockland had the lead and even added one more run in the third, and should have been in the drivers seat. Wareham however also knew how to battle back and managed to score three runs in the top of the fourth inning, and two runs in the top of the fifth inning, with Rockland errors in each inning helping them into scoring positions. The end result would favor the visitors and waste a good outing by Rockland pitcher Josh Sullivan. Rockland has a team that can score runs, but seem to be inconsistent on defense, which in Legion Baseball is opening the door to a subpar season.

Friday, June 12
ROCKLAND LOSSES TO BRIDGEWATER AGAIN

Hopes were high that things would be different this year in a game against Bridgewater Post 203, but alas the baseball gods seemed to be happy leaving things just the way they are. It took until the top of the third inning for things to unravel for Rockland, but unravel it did. One of the most unsettling parts of this game for Rockland Post 147 was the fact that they had no errors, and still could not keep it close. Bridgewater scored six times in the third, with eight hits, off of Rockland starter Joe Lennon. The Post 147 coaching staff was stunned to see the normally solid pitcher (Lennon) be hit so hard and so often in an inning. The "Raiders" never quit attitude, led them to bounce back in the bottom of the third inning, with singles from Steve Machaby, A.J. Roache, Josh Sullivan, and Cory Comeau, to pull within two runs of Bridgewater. Over the next four innings Rockland pitching could not stop Bridgewater from scoring, padding their lead with four more runs, while Rockland could do nothing further with Bridgewaters' pitching. The game ended on a 3-6-3 double play by Bridgewater, killing any hopes of a comeback by Rockland, and gave Rockland their second loss, both of which were at home. On a good note Josh Sullivan went 2 for 3 at the plate, but on a bad note A.J. Roache strained his quadricep and is out for a week, along with Mike Mahoney out with a pulled hamstring for 3 weeks

Bridgewater Post 203 ==10  vs. Rockland Post 147 == 4

POST 147 DEFEATS HANOVER POST 149 ( 6 to 5)

Rockland Legion Post 147 baseball team paid another visit to Hanover High School field and Hanover Post 149 Legion team.In the past visits Rockland has come away on the short end of the stick, but this year hopes were high to change that.Post 147 jumped on Hanover pitcher David Gibson in the top of the first inning, when Rocklands' Cory Mitchell doubled and Nick Ayala hit a bullet over the left field fence for a two run homer, giving Rockland the quick lead. Hanover picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning due to and error by Rockland, and grabbed another run in the bottom of the third after solid hits from David Gibson and Mitch McClune.Post 147 Raiders struck again in the top of the fifth inning with another Cory Mitchell hit, followed by a Hanover error, and Gibson hitting Nick Ayala to load the bases. Rocklands' Matt Losciuto powered a fly ball deep to left center for a ground rule double, scoring Mitchell and Ayala. Losciuto would move to third on a wild pitch and score on a sacrifice fly by Cory Comeau. Rockland had the lead 6 to 2 and Raider pitcher Cory Comeau was having a masterful performance for Rockland. Hanover made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning and Rockland did their best to try and give the game away.Three errors and only one hit netted Hanover two runs and the tying run came down to a play at the plate which was the third out for Hanover. Rockland Post 147 "Raiders" escaped with the win, but a great pitching perfomance by Cory Comeau was almost spoiled. Comeau pitched seven innings and allowed only five hits and 2 earned runs, and had Hanover off balance all night.Rockland wins their second game of the season 6 to 5 and improves to 2 and 1. Matt Losciuto went 3 for 4 and Cory Mitchell went 2 for 4, while Cory Comeau struck out 5 Hanover batters.

Monday, June 8
ROCKLAND vs MIDDLEBORO POST 64

Middleboro Post 64 came to Rockland Veterans Memorial Stadium for the Rockland Post 147 home opener. Middleboro wasted no time jumping all over Rockland starter Derek Smith for 7 hits and 8 runs in just two-thirds of an inning pitched. The always good hitting Middleboro squad, also scored four runs off of relief pitcher Steve Gardner on his Legion debut in the second inning. Spotting Post 64 twelve runs in two innings is not a good way to open at home. Post 147 did answer back in the bottom of the second inning with four hits and three runs off the bats of Cory Mitchell, and Derek Smith, who singled ahead of a Bomb to left from the bat of Steve Gardner. Gardner would score next on a single from Cory Comeau. Rockland repeated the hot bat sequence in the third inning, when A.J. Roache battled Middleboro pitcher Evan Anderson to a base on balls, then Matt Losciuto tripled, scoring Roache. Cory Mitchell would single once more scoring Losciuto, and then Mitchell would score on another single from Cory Comeau. However, that would be it for the Offense of Post 147, as Anderson set down may Rockland batters when he needed to. Rockland reliever Joe Lennon came in to pitch and held Middleboro to only three hits for the next five innings, but that was too late, the damage had been done early. Sloppy fielding by Rockland and great hitting by Middleboro spelled disaster for the Home Opener, and this one went in the book for a loss. On a good note Cory Comeau went 3 for 4, A.J. Roache went 2 for 3, and Cory Mitchell went 2 for 4 at the plate.

RECORD 1 Win & 1 Loss

RAIDERS WIN SEASON OPENER BEATING PEMBROKE
 The Rockland Legion Baseball season opened on the road at the new fields for Pembroke on Mattakeesett Street. Pembroke Post 143 put together a nice opening day ceremony, and then it was right into intense baseball that Legion is famous for.In the early years of 2003 and 2004, Rockland Legion seemed to be always snake bit during their season. Lately however the snake took a break, until this game. Rockland Post 147 was threatening in the top of the first with two men on and Matt Losciuto at the plate. Losciuto launched a bomb to centerfield, sending Mike Mahoney and Nick Ayala on clear paths to score, until the Snake Bit and Mahoney popped something in his leg rounding third and could run no further. The ensuing confusion over what happened resulted in a double play for Pembroke and an end to the inning for Rockland.The sign of a good team is to fight through adversity, and Post 147 did just that. In the top of the second Cory Mitchell singled, stole second, then third, and scored on a wild pitch. The top of the third went good for Rockland also when Josh Sullivan singled and Nick Ayala walked, setting the stage for A.J. Roache to hit a gap shot single to right center scoring Sullivan and Ayala. Post 147 padded the score a little more with a two run, home run off the bat of Josh Sullivan to left field in the top of the fourth inning giving Rockland a five to nothing lead. Rockland starting pitcher Josh Sullivan kept Pembroke Legion of the base paths allowing only five hits, while striking out nine Post 143 batters. The Rockland combination of Nick Ayala at short stop and Cory Comeau at second base turned two double plays to help keep Pembroke in check and give Sullivan the solid defense he wanted. Rockland Post 147 players A.J. Roache and Cory Comeau went 2 for 4 at the plate, while team mate Josh Sullivan went 3 for 5 at the plate. The Rockland Legion Post 147 "Raiders" defeat Pembroke Legion Post 143 by a score of 8 to 2 // Rockland wins its 2009 season opener

MIKE MAHONEY G.N.A.C. PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ROCKLAND LEGION BASEBALL IS PROUD OF ALL THEIR

COLLEGE PLAYERS----CONGRATS TO MIKE MAHONEY

Mike Mahoney has been honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference as the baseball Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 6th and becomes the first Laser baseball player to win a weekly award. Mahoney is a freshman from Rockland, MA and plays right field and pitcher for the Lasers.  In a 3-3 week for Lasell, Mahoney accounted for one of the wins on the mound.  Against Daniel Webster he got a no decision despite pitching seven and a third innings, giving up no earned runs, eight hits and struck out 3.  He then picked up a victory over Norwich during which time he pitched five inning in relief only giving up one run and struck out six.  Mahoney also had a strong week from the plate that game going 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored, 3 RBI's and a home run.  He finished the week and led the Lasers with 7 hits, 6 runs, and 4 RBI's, hitting an average of .538.
