Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who is eligible to play JO?

Portland North currently has only girls' volleyball teams.  JO is for junior high and high school students.  There are four girls' divisions: 18 and under, 16 and under 14 and under and 12 and under.  We welcome girls 9 years old to high school seniors.

What experience is needed?

You do not need to have any prior volleyball experience for the 14 and under or 12 and under teams, just a willingness to learn.  Experience is necessary for the older teams. Most of the teams are chosen on ability.

When are practices?

Practices have been every Sunday from the first of December to the first of May, except holidays and tournament weekends.  Individual teams may practice during the week as time and facilities allow.  The practice times have not been determined for 2009/2010.  Practices will be held at SMCC, Newbegin, Yarmouth H.S. and Greely H.S.

When and where are tournaments?

There are two tournaments scheduled for March, two in April and one (the "championship") in May.  Some teams may compete at additional tournaments.  The 2010 schedule is on the calendar.

The locations of tournaments are not determined until the week before the tournament date.  Portland North hosts a tournament each of the weekends (5).  This gives the possibility of a home tourney during the season.  However, most tournaments are in southern New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts.  The "Club" level schedule typically has a maximum drive of two hours.  The "Regional" teams may travel up to four hours.
The teams are all "travel teams".  Travel costs vary and are not included in the registration fee.  Portland North DOES NOT provided buses.
How much does it cost?

The basic cost in 2009 was $240 to $280 depending on age.  It will be increased by $10-$20 per team this coming season.  This covers the gym rental, NERVA membership, coaches' stipends, tournament fees, administrative costs and other miscellaneous items.  This does not cover the cost of travel to and from tournaments. There is an additional uniform fee, as well as considerable extra cost for the upper level "Gold" teams.
Fees are non-refundable.  There is a $10 fee for any returned checks.

How long has the Portland area had a JO team?

The Portland North JO club was started by John Razsa in 2001.  The first year there were 22 players on two teams, 14's and 16's.  The number of players and teams has grown since 2001 as well as the level of play.  Last season we served about 100 players.

What is NERVA?

NERVA stands for New England Regional Volleyball Association.  This is the region of Junior Olympic volleyball of which Maine is a member.  Each player becomes a member of NERVA when joining Portland North.  NERVA schedules the tournament dates and locations.  It also provides training for the JO coaches.

NERVA is a division of USA Volleyball.

How do I know if I should tryout for the Gold (16s and 18s) team?

The Gold team is normally for girls with more experience and talent. First year players will not have much chance of making the Gold team. There are exceptions to that, though. If you are quite tall or fast or good at sports in general, for example, maybe you should give it a try.  If you're not sure, you can ask your coach their opinion or have them contact me.

You should know that Gold teams also require more commitment, attend more tourneys- which are at a higher level, practice twice a week rather than just Sundays and have higher costs associated with them for those reasons.

Feel free to call John at 657-3966 if you have other questions about Gold or just want to chat about any of this.
