A Call For Help
For the third time in a year, our complex has been vandalized. Last fall TCB Construction graciously donated equipment, supplies, and volunteered to help us clean up the mess...but now we've been hit again. We hope that the police eventua...lly bring to justice the people responsible for these disgusting acts. In the meantime, as we move into the final stretch of our 50th Anniversary season and get ready to host District and State tournaments, our league once again needs everyone's support!

Looking For Additional Tournament Volunteers

Tomorrow starts our annual tournament season!  Plaza Little League will be hosting five tournaments over the next few weeks:

June 21-27: District 9-10 Softball
June 28-July 4: District Major Baseball, Junior Softball, and Senior Baseball

We are still looking for additional volunteers to assist with various activities during this time:

- Scorekeeping
- Pitch Counting
- Concession Stand

Because many of our volunteers, coaches, parents, older players, etc. will be involved in tournaments at other leagues, this time of year is always “all hands on deck.”  So if you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact Carol Bultman at 839-6912.

Saturday, May 17 Activities Postponed to Sunday, May 18
All games and other special SPCA fundraising events scheduled for Saturday, May 17 are being rescheduled for Sunday, May 18. We are very sorry, but unfortunately Friday’s storms dumped over 5 inches of rain on our complex. Fields are flooded and will not be able to be made safe for play in time for Saturday. We are very optimistic that the additional time for fields to drain and dry out will allow us to play Sunday. Managers will be contacted by their Vice Presidents when all of the logistics for Sunday are complete.

Remembering Vickie Basham
Vickie Basham, our former Secretary, passed away Monday after a brave battle with cancer. For over 25 years, “Miss Vickie” (as she was affectionately known) helped preside over Board meetings, assisted with fundraisers, and accomplished many behind-the-scenes logistical tasks to keep our league running smoothly…always with a warm, cheerful smile. She was a fixture at All-Star time, providing an ...experienced scorekeeper and announcer for the District and State tournaments we hosted. Her dedication was evident, as she continued to volunteer many years after her sons finished playing. She will be greatly missed. Our sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her husband Rich, her sons Brandon and Brian, and her family and friends.

In Memoriam: Harvey Oaks

Harvey Oaks, former volunteer with our league, passed away last night after a year and half battle with cancer. He managed and coached several major baseball regular season and all-star teams from 1990-2001 (one of which you see pictured here - he is back left in the photo). Two sons and two grandsons played in our league. He was a scorekeeper and announcer for many of the District and State tournaments we have hosted over the last 15 years. He was also involved with Plaza Recreation League from 1990-2005 as a basketball and football coach and referee.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and the former players he coached.

Remembering Jake Hardison

Jake Hardison has passed away.  Mr. Hardison was instrumental in the growth of Little League Baseball and Softball in the Tidewater area.  His total dedication was evident in his many decades of involvement at various levels:  he began as a coach and manager, served as District 8 Administrator for over 30 years, held a term as Virginia State Little League Coordinator, and organized since 1992 a Challenger event for disabled youth (which has grown into the largest Challenger event held in the world).  Jake’s guidance, leadership and vision will be truly missed.  Our sincerest condolences go out to the entire Hardison family, and his many, many friends.

In Memoriam: Glenn McClanan
Plaza Little League is saddended by the passing of former State Delegate Glenn McClanan.  He and his wife Reba (a former member of City Council) are longtime friends of the league.  Residing near the complex, their two sons (Glenn Jr. and Martin) played in our program.  Glenn and Reba also frequently attended Opening Ceremonies long after their sons graduated from our league.  Plaza Little League sends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to all of Glenn McClanan's family and friends.
