STARS Take 1st Place in Halloween Bonanza 2 Tournament

(click on title above for tournament results)

AWESOME!! That is the only way to describe the PlayBall Stars game play this weekend. The Stars string of 3 consecutive tournaments of being in the medal rounds was only temporarily interrupted by tournament rainouts during the past few weekends. The Stars were eager to play, started strong and never looked back. Our first place finish marks the 2nd consecutive year the Stars have taken the ECTB Halloween Bonanza Tournament. As an added bonus, the Stars also will receive a paid berth to the ECTB Championship Tournament in August 2006.

The Stars began the tournament with an 8:30am Saturday game in 38 degree weather against the Chester County Blue Claws. The Stars came away with a 12-6 win and were able to test new pitching and fielding position changes against the opponent, too. However, the second game of the day became a pitching dual with the North Syracuse Sizzlers. The Stars had baserunners throughout the game but failed to score. Late in the game, the Sizzlers scored on a suicide squeeze play, but had yet to get a hit in the game. In the last inning, with the bases loaded, the Stars punched through 2 runs and were able to stick the 2-1 victory.

On Sunday, the #2 seeded Stars again faced the Sizzlers. This time the Stars took hold of the game early and scored often, beating the Sizzlers 11-1 and advancing to the championship round against the tough Pennsylvania Patriots. The Stars were determined to avenge an earlier championship loss against the same Patriots and accomplished that goal with a 6-5 victory. It was a tough and classic “see-saw” battle, but the Stars persevered in the end.

The Stars Game Results from this Weekend:

PlayBall Stars 12 – Chester County Blue Claws 6
PlayBall Stars 2 – North Syracuse Sizzlers 1
PlayBall Stars 11 – North Syracuse Sizzlers 1
    PlayBall Stars 6 – Pennsylvania Patriots 5

Overall, the Stars went 4-0 for the tournament, scored 31 runs and gave up 13 runs. The Stars success was realized through excellent pitching, strong hitting and consistent defense. Great Job PlayBall Stars!!

Another Rainout - ECTB Halloween Bonanza

Third time’s a charm? Not in this case, as the Stars are rained out for their 3rd consecutive weekend. The tournament will be rescheduled next weekend and be called the ECTB Halloween Bonanza 2. Keep your fingers crossed . . .

STARS Take 3rd in ECTB October Fall Fest (15U) Tournament!

(click on title for latest tournament results)

The Stars have been playing excellent ball including their most recent tournament in the ECTB October Fall Fest. With our own 14U age bracket cancelled, the Stars elected to “play up” at 15U, rather than play no baseball at all. The Stars players showed exceptional heart and determination throughout the entire tournament and have great results to show for it.

The Stars faced the Doylestown Pirates in their first game and after a slow start defeated the Pirates by a score of 8 – 3. In a game that immediately followed, the Stars played the Horsham Magic. Freshly “tuned up” from the first game, the Stars quickly overtook the Magic in 4 innings, winning by a score of 16 – 5. On Sunday, the Stars were seeded #3 but ended up playing the 8am game against the Doylestown Pirates. The early hour did not deter the Stars, who again beat the Pirates, this time by a score of 16 – 1 and clearing the way for the Stars to enter the medal rounds. In the semi-final round the Stars lost to the Delaware Angels 7 – 2, who went on to take 2nd place in the tournament.

Overall, it was an excellent showing for the PlayBall Stars who ended up with 3 wins, 1 loss and a 3rd place finish. In addition, after 4 games the Stars scored the 2nd most runs and gave the 2nd least runs in the tournament. Not bad for playing in a 15U tournament – great job Stars!!

STARS Take 2nd in ECTB Wood Bat Classic!

In our best showing yet this Fall, the Stars took a 2nd Place finish in the ECTB Wood Bat Classic held in Reading, PA during 9/24 & 9/25. The Stars set off with a strong start and never looked back. In the 1st game, the Stars shutout the Sykesville Cyclones 11-0 and then ended the day beating the Eckley Reds by a score of 8-4.

On Sunday and being slotted as the number 2 seed, the Stars went on to blank the Montco Mudcats by 10-0. In the semi-final round, the Stars continued to move on with a commanding win over the Horsham Magic by a score of 7-1.

In the final round, however, it was the tough Pennsylvania Patriots who ended up as tourny champs by beating the STARS 7-4. It was a well-played game on both sides. The STARS were a couple hits shy of winning the game, leaving the bases loaded in the last inning with the winning run at the plate.

Overall, it was a great tournament for the STARS. Strong hitting, defense and pitching were the Stars’ recipe for success. In 5 games, the STARS were 4-1, scoring 39 runs while giving up only 12 runs. Excellent job PlayBall STARS!

STARS Finish 3rd in ECTB Heroes Remembered Tournament

After a rough Labor Day tournament showing, the PlayBall STARS regrouped and earned 3rd place in ECTB’s 2nd Annual Heroes Remembered Tourny.

The STARS opened the tournament by beating the Cherry Hill Stealers 17-4. In the second game of the day, the STARS offense sputtered a bit and we came away with only a tie with Grand Slam USA 4-4, after allowing a late game run to score. On Sunday, the STARS played well against a tough Appalachian Trailblazer team and won 3-2. In the semi-final game, the STARS could not keep down the no. 2 seed Eckley Reds-Black, losing by a score of 10-7. The weekend's efforts allowed the STARS to take 3rd place overall in the tournament.

It was a good series for the STARS and good to see the team back to their winning ways. Way to go STARS!

STAR Miss Medal Round in ECTB Labor Day Tournament

The STARS did not execute as they wanted in their first tournament of the new 14U Fall 2005 season. Games were close, but the defense could not always hold off late inning surges by the opposing teams.

The STARS lost the first game to the Montco Mustangs 6-4, after leading the game and allowing a late come-from-behind victory. The STARS came back strong against the Springfield Reds, but allowed 7 runs scored, in the 14-7 win. In the seeded game, the STARS lost a heartbreaker to the no. 3 seed Hughesville Yankees, 8-7, leaving the STARS to play next in only a consolation game. In the final game, the team was still down after the tough 8-7 loss, and ended up losing again through lackluster play to the Montco Mustangs 9-3. It was a frustrating weekend, but that is baseball. Now it is time for the STARS to re-focus efforts and sharpen their skills for the upcoming Fall tournaments.

STARS Take Summer City-County Championship!!

The PlayBall Stars are the 2005 League Champions of the 13U City-County Prep League! Congratulations STARS!!

Having come off a successful inaugural regular season in the City-County Prep League with a 14-3-1 record, the Stars went on to win the League Championship series.

The Stars began the weekend playoffs as the number 2 seed behind Muhlenberg. In the first game on Saturday the Stars faced Mifflin and came away with a commanding 11-1 win in 4 innings. The next opponent was Weiser, a great come-from-behind team, but the Stars were up to the task and won their second game 10-1. On Sunday the undefeated Stars faced an undefeated Muhlenberg team. It was a relatively tight game and the Stars came through with an 8-5 victory that placed them into the Championship round.

In the Championship round that began on Monday, the Stars again faced the tough Muhlenberg team. This time the Stars had an “off” game losing by 5-3 and forcing a final game on Tuesday. In the Final Championship Game, though, the Stars definitely found new spark and trounced Muhlenberg by a score of 15-4 in only 4 ½ innings of play. The Stars scored multiple runs in every inning, driven by a 16-hit attack, took the lead early and never looked back. This was truly a team effort combining excellent hitting, fine pitching and great defense. Congratulations Stars – 2005 League Champs!!
