Chris Doser was happy about his two individual championships Saturday at the Section V Class A championships, but he was thrilled with what his two relay teams did.
"It's really cool to be a part of those two relays because the last time we beat a Pittsford team was in ninth grade," Doser said. "It is really nice to accomplish something with your teammates."
Penfield was in third place in the 400 freestyle relay when Doser entered the water and put the Patriots in the lead.
Doser was more than two seconds faster than the field in the 200 freestyle and almost three seconds faster than the field in the 100 freestyle.
"All the guys I have raced have really pushed me to be better," Doser said. "There are a lot of quality swimmers in Section V and we all make each other better."
Freshman Matt Tanchick won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and led Pittsford to its eighth consecutive team title.
"We worked very hard through all of January just waiting for this opportunity and I was not disappointed," Pittsford coach Mark Morris said. "We had a lot of young swimmers play important roles."
Tanchick was one of those swimmers. In both events he edged out defending champion Jason Gerlach of Penfield.
"If it wasn't for my team pushing me I wouldn't be standing here today," Tanchick said. "I have to give credit to seniors Lee Silverstein, Kevin Maier and Brandon McManus for making me work so hard during the season."
Tanchick edged Gerlach by five-hundredths of a second in the breaststroke.
"It's nice to swim against someone who's been there before," Tanchick said. "He's a great swimmer and an even better guy and we'll both be at states."
The state meet is February 26 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
