John Lyman and Emmett Jacobi were double winners for the Panthers as the Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team defeated Webster, 106-78, to clinch their sixth straight Monroe County Division 1 title. Pittsford improved to 7-0 in dual meets this season, while Webster was handed its first defeat.
The match between the two Section 5 leaders was expected to be a good one and the fans that crowded the bleachers at the Webster Aquatic Center on January 15 weren’t disappointed. The opening medley relay was almost a dead heat, with Webster edging the Panthers team of Andrew Maier, Morgan Marin, Brandon McManus and Dan Locke by less than 1/10th of a second, 1:43.28 to 1:43.37. Alan Chuang, Lee Silverstein, Ryan Horey and Owen Drinkwater took third for Pittsford, showing the depth that has kept Pittsford on top for the past six seasons.
Jacobi then posted his first win with a time of 1:50.95 in the 200 free, with McManus taking third for the Panthers in the event. Matt Tanchick followed with a second place in the 200 IM (2:09.62), with Chuang in third place.
The 50 free was next, another exciting event for the Panthers, as their sprinters all hit the wall within split seconds of each other to sweep the top three spots. Lyman was first with a winning time of 23.30, Locke took second with 23.33 and Maier was third at 23.45. All three are seniors and co-captains of this year’s team.
In the diving competition, Pittsford's other senior co-captain, Alex Byrd, took fourth place for the Panthers with 165.85 points.
After diving, Marin took second in the 100 fly (57.14), with Horey third. Lyman’s second win came in the 100 free with a time of 50.08, again just touching out teammate Locke who took second with 50.13. Jacobi’s second victory came in the 500 free (4:57.65), with McManus second.
Maier, Jacobi, Tyler McCrobie and Lyman posted a 1:33.04 to take second in the sprint relay, the 200 free. Drinkwater, Maier, Horey and Tanchick were third in the event. Maier’s time of 59.98 took second in the 100 back, with Chuang third. The 100 breast was decided at the wall as Marin won the event by 2/100th of a second (1:05.73-1:05.75). Tanchick was third in the breaststroke for the Panthers.
Marin, McCrobie, Lyman and Locke closed the meet with a 3:27.24 to win the 400 free relay.
The Panthers Junior Varsity also racked up another win, easily defeating the Lakers JV swimmers.
In addition to their 7-0 record (with three dual meets to go before Sectionals), the Panthers are also winners of this year’s Owego Invitational and the “Fab 4 Invitational” at Bath. The Panthers hold one of the longest winning streaks in Section 5 history, 68 straight victories in dual meets under Head Coach Mark Morris.
