Pittsford held off a challenge from a strong Penfield team to win the 35th annual Water Polo competition to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
The competition, held over Thanksgiving weekend, traditionally marks the beginning of the boys’ high school swim season. More than $2,500 was raised this year to help send diabetic children to summer camp. Over the 35 years of the tournament, more than $70,000 has been raised for the cause.
Eight teams took part in this year’s competition on November 28 and 29 at Mendon Pool. Day one (morning): Greece 12, Gates 3; Penfield 6, Greece 5; Penfield 14, Gates 5; Penfield 10, Webster 8; Webster 12, Gates 2, and Webster 11, Greece 5. In the afternoon bracket, it was Churchville 5, McQuaid 2; Pittsford 7, Fairport, 5; Fairport 10, Churchville 8; Pittsford 13, McQuaid 2; Pittsford 19, Churchville 6, and Fairport 13, McQuaid 8 (in double overtime).

The Panthers won the tournament thanks to strong goal tending and a balanced attack that included a major contribution from the younger swimmers.
The volunteer officials for day one were Dr. Steffan Lucas and Ralph Simpson. On day two, Aram Salehi and Charles Rugg did the officiating. Coach Fred Rockow started the charity tournament in 1973.
