French lifts Pittsford to 'A' crown

Irondequoit's Henahan wins Swimmer of the Meet, 10th career title

(February 17, 2008) — Ricky Henahan may need to add another wing to his already crowded trophy room.

The Irondequoit senior won two events, set a meet record and won Swimmer of the Meet as he finished his Section V career with 10 individual titles at the Class A championships Saturday at Webster Aquatic Center.

Pittsford's Nathan French also was a double-winner as he led his team to its sixth team title.

"I'm going to miss the competition; it has been a great ride coming to this meet every year," said Henahan, who won six Class B titles in his first three years swimming varsity and four Class A titles the past two years.

Henahan won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 54.33 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 46.48. Both times earned him All-America status and the 100 freestyle was a meet record.

"I wanted to go 1:55 in the IM, so I was pretty happy," Henahan said. "Normally, I wouldn't do the IM, but this year I started developing it more and doing some different training."

Henahan, who holds the state record in the 100 backstroke, will swim the backstroke and the 100 butterfly at the state meet in two weeks at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. Henahan is the two-time defending state backstroke champion.

"I think if you do it (100 backstroke) too much then it kind of gets harder," Henahan said. "I just wanted to try something different at this event and then get ready to go hard at states."

French, a senior, placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:42.92), the 500 freestyle (4:38.82) and was also part of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

"I was hoping to go a little faster in the 500, but I am thrilled with the time in the 200," French said. "It was also nice to win the relays as a senior as well."

Pittsford finished with 464 points to win the team title, ahead of Fairport (395) and Webster (314.5).

"I think this is one of the best teams we have had since I have been here," French said. "We work harder than everyone else in the pool, and I think it pays off. We have great coaches and just awesome support for the program."

Teammate Andrew Kuter won the 50 freestyle and finished third in the 100 freestyle.

"I was pretty pleased with the 50, but I would have liked to go a little faster," Kuter said. "It was a fun meet, but we are already looking forward to the state meet; we still have unfinished business to take care of."

Kenny Pink also was a winner for the Panthers, winning the 100 breaststroke.

Fairport seniors Peter Koenig and Dylan Sheemaker each won an individual event and were part of the 200-medley relay team. Koenig won the 100 backstroke and Sheemaker won the 100 butterfly.

"Winning the medley was very special for us," Koenig said. "When we had our dual meet with Pittsford, they beat us badly, so that was a big win for us."
