PITTSFORD SWIMMERS SHINE AT NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Victories in the 200 free relay and the 500 free helped propel the Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team to third place points among New York State public high schools in the recent New York State Championship meet at Buffalo.
Andrew Kuter, Kenny Pink, Jimmy Prezzano and Nate French turned in a time of 1:28.08 for first place in the sprint relay. Matt Lobban and Sean McManus teamed up with Pink and Kuter for eighth place in the 200 medley relay with a 1:40.83. French had Pittsford’s only victory in individual events, a public high winning time of 3:39.58 in the 500 free.
With the top 16 finishers scoring points for their teams (the top eight in finals, the next eight in the consolation heat), the Panthers were well represented at States. French captured ninth place in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.23. Pink was 13th in the 200 IM with a 2:00.65 and 10th in the 100 breast with 1:01.12. Kuter was fifth in the 50 free with a time of 21.86 and 12th in the 100 free with a 48.73.
Pittsford’s sprint relay victory and French’s win in the 500 free started a streak of first place finishes for Section 5 swimmers. Ricky Henahan of Irondequoit followed the relay with a State record time of 49.65 in the 100 back and Fairport’s Jake Fisher took first in the 100 breast with a time of 58.56.
Qualifying to swim for Pittsford in the preliminary round but not returning for finals were Prezzano in the 200 IM (2:07.01) and the 100 free (50.96); McManus in the 100 fly (55.76) and 100 breast (1:01.93); Dan Locke in the 100 free (51.32); Matt Van Voorhis in the 100 breast (1:02.90), and the 400 free relay team of Locke, Prezzano, McManus and French (3:24.46).
Pittsford scored 110 points at States, the most of any team in Section 5, and good enough for third place overall among public high school teams. Section 5 finished second with 343 points, just 3½ points behind Section 1
The Panthers were once again undefeated during the 2006-2007 season (the team is 49-0 in dual meets over several years). They are defending Monroe County champions and won their fifth straight Section 5 championship in February.
The New York State Championships were held at Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College on March 2-3.
