Dynasty in the Pool

The key to a dynasty lies not in the present, but in the future. Pittsford swimming has built a powerhouse based on their present team treating the up-and-comers with respect. Just like the championship swimmers of the past five years treated them.
Says junior Kenny Pink, "They would always watch me swim and give me tips, like tell me I needed to shimmer more off walls. I think by having that experience, I've come to watch the little kids more closely, the underclassmen. I think it was definitely a positive influence on me, personally, so now I give the underclassmen the respect that I was given."
In their last dual meet of the season last week, Pittsford topped Fairport for its 49th straight victory. None of the varsity swimmers has ever lost a dual meet.
Says coach Mark, "This community has a very rich history in swimming, dating back to the mid-60s when the program began. We were a split district as of '73. Both teams just seemed to carry on that tradition. It is a very rich community backing and I gotta believe I'm blessed with a great gene pool."
In the Fairport meet, four swimmers and two relays from Pittsford plus a couple of Raiders swimmers made the New York State qualifying cut time. Part of Pittsford's success is attributable to the strong competition they get in Section 5.
Says captain Jim Prezzano, "I think it's helped us because, as our competition's been raised, we have to get better to beat them and beating undefeated teams is a lot of fun and it takes a lot of hard work."
