PITTSFORD DOWNS FAIRPORT TO REPEAT AS MONROE COUNTY CHAMPS
Pittsford touched out Fairport by less than a tenth of a second to win the opening 200 medley relay in the final dual meet of the season at Mendon Pool on January 30. It was as close as the Red Raiders would come, as the Panthers cruised by their rivals, 113-73, to cap another undefeated season and to clinch yet another Monroe County Division I championship.

Matt Lobban, Kenny Pink, Sean McManus and Andrew Kuter posted a 1:40.54 in a come-from-behind victory in the medley relay. Andrew Maier, Matt VanVoorhis, Lee Silverstein and Tyler McCrobie took fourth place in the medley, as Pittsford went on to victory in all three relays and in nine of 12 events.

Nathan French followed with a 1:47.54 for first place in the 200 free, the first of two wins on the day. Jimmy Prezzano took second for Pittsford and Brandon McManus placed fourth. Kenny Pink won the 200 IM for Pittsford in 2:01.79, with Silverstein fifth. Kuter than picked up the first of his two victories with a time of 22.52 in the 50 free, followed by Dan Locke in second and John Lyman in fourth place.

In the diving competition, Wills DeMoulin scored 191.20 points, good enough for second place in a close contest, with Alex Byrd in fourth place and Charlie Shaddock fifth for the Panthers.

Sean McManus had a scorching 55.54 to win the 100 fly, with Locke in fourth place. Kuter followed with his second victory, a 49.66 in the 100 free, with Prezzano placing third and Lyman fourth.

French again demonstrated why he’s one of the state’s top ranked distance swimmers with a 4:44.77 for victory in the 500 free, his second win, with Brandon McManus taking second and Silverstein fourth.

Kuter, Prezzano, Pink and French teamed up to win the 200 free relay in 1:29.99, an excellent time. Lobban’s 58.05 took second in the 100 back, with Maier coming in fourth. Pink took second place in the 100 breast behind Fairport’s Jake Fisher, one of the state’s top ranked breaststrokers. Sean McManus was third for the Panthers in the event and VanVoorhis came in fifth.

Pittsford closed the meet in style with Locke, Prezzano, Sean McManus and French turning in a winning time of 3:25.53 in the 400 free relay. McCrobie, Lobban, Brandon McManus and Lyman were third in the event.

Head coach Mark Morris was pleased with his team’s performance, the 49th straight dual meet victory for the finmen over several years (Pittsford finished 12-0 in dual meets and 14-0 overall this season). Morris noted that his swimmers turned in state cut times in seven events. The only disappointment was Fairport’s junior varsity edging Pittsford’s JV.

The meet began with both teams honoring their graduating seniors. Eight Panthers swam their last high school dual meet at Mendon Pool – co-captains Lobban and Prezzano, and seniors DeMoulin, Shaddock, VanVoorhis, Ben French, Ari Kapilivsky and Jeff Parvin.

“Swimming for my high school was one of the best experiences of my life, and not just because we win,” Prezzano said. “We support each other and we have a great time. It’s been fun,” he said.

Lobban agreed. “I’m feeling 100% satisfied and fulfilled,” he said. “I’m definitely looking forward to swimming in college.”

DeMoulin said, “it’s kind of sad, knowing it’s all over.” But like Lobban, he “can’t wait until next year” and the chance to continue his swimming and diving career in college.

The next challenge for Pittsford will be the defense of their Section 5 crown on February 17 at the Webster Aquatic Center. The team will be going for its fifth straight Section 5 Class A championship.
