PITTSFORD CAPS UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH WINS AGAINST FAIRPORT, BROCKPORT
PITTSFORD "THREE-PEATS" AS MONROE COUNTY CHAMPS
The Pittsford Swimming and Diving team celebrated its last home meet of the season in style on February 1. The Panthers honored their graduating seniors, all co-captains. They dedicated a new six-lane scoreboard. And they swept first place in all 12 events, while defeating Brockport 122-56 and completing a third straight undefeated season (11-0 in dual meets, 13-0 overall).
Coming off an emotional win the day before against division rival Fairport, which clinched their third straight Monroe County divisional title, the Panthers might have been excused if they let down a little against Brockport, but it didn’t happen. The finmen cruised to their 37th straight dual meet victory and showed why they’ll be among the top seeds at Sectionals in two weeks.
"This may be the longest unbeaten streak in the history of Pittsford swimming," head coach Mark Morris said.
As expected, the Fairport meet on January 31 was one of the highlights of the season. The Red Raiders were the last team to beat Pittsford, four seasons back. The rivalry always brings out the best in the swimmers, as well as supporters of both teams, and the Fairport pool rocked to the chants.
The Panthers stuck to the script that resulted in success all season – Ben Silverstein, Kenny Pink, Sean McManus and Andrew Kuter came out of the gate with a 1:42.16 to win the opening 200 medley relay, and Pittsford never looked back.
Nathan French followed with his first win on the day in the 200 free, with Charlie Ruff second and John Lyman fourth. French also posted first in the 500 free with a 4:46.37 (McManus was second). In the 200 individual medley, Pink took second place and Jimmy Prezzano third, behind Fairport’s Jake Fisher. Then Kuter claimed the first of his two victories, a 23.10 in the 50 free. He also won the 100 free, with Prezzano third and Silverstein fourth.
In the diving competition, Sean Hingel was first with 195.05 points and Wills DeMoulin clinched third with 178.55.
Other individual event highlights for Pittsford included Pink’s first place in the 100 breast and Silverstein’s second place in the 100 back (1/100 of a second behind the winner). Kuter, Prezzano, Ruff and French teamed up to win the 200 free relay and Ruff, Prezzano, Pink and French closed the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay.
The final score was Pittsford 119, Fairport 67. Pittsford’s junior varsity also extended its unbeaten streak, defeating the Fairport JV, 103-71.
Back at home against Brockport, the team paid tribute to graduating seniors Sean Hingel, Derek Lasher, Charlie Ruff and Ben Silverstein, all co-captains. Ruff completed his fifth year with the team, Silverstein his sixth.
Ruff and Silverstein said they were looking forward to Sectionals and States.
"We have a versatile, deep line-up. I feel really good about this team," Ruff said.
Pittsford took the top three spots in three events against Brockport. It was Ruff, Prezzano and Dan Locke (1,2,3) in the 200 free. McManus, Silverstein and Matt Lobban were 1,2,3 in the 200 IM. Locke, Ari Kapilivsky and Dave Miller were 1,2,3 in the 500 free. Other highlights included French’s wins in both the 50 and 100 free events, Prezzano’s first place in the 100 fly, Silverstein’s victory in the 100 back and McManus’s win in the 100 breast. Wills DeMoulin won diving with an impressive 214.15 points, with Hingel second.
The junior varsity won its meet against Brockport, 106-61, extending another long unbeaten streak.
