The Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team won the opening 200 medley relay and the closing 400 free relay as the Panthers took first place at the 2005 Owego Invitational. The Panthers avenged last year’s narrow loss at Owego, rolling up 429 total points, 85 more than the second place team from Vestal of Section 4.
Ben Silverstein, Charlie Ruff, Kenny Pink and Andrew Kuter helped set the pace, opening the meet by touching-out the Vestal medley relay team by 13/100th of a second. It was the first of many close finishes on the day. Nathan French followed by winning the 200 free, with Jimmy Prezzano placing third and John Lyman in 12th place for Pittsford.
With nine teams competing and more than 60 swimmers taking part in some events, the top 16 finishers scored points for their team. The Panthers again relied on the balanced attack of strength and depth that has led to three straight state championships.
Sean McManus and Pink finished a close 3,4 in the 200 IM and Lee Silverstein finished 15th, adding points for the team. Kuter followed with a second place in the 50 free, 7/100th of a second behind the winner, with Dan Locke coming in eighth. In the 100 fly it was Prezzano in fourth place, Locke sixth and Derek Lasher in 10th.
Some of the strongest competition for Pittsford’s swimmers came from their own team, as was evident in the 100 free with Kuter, Ruff and B. Silverstein coming in 2,3,4. French had another strong showing in the 500 free, where he placed second, with Matt Lobban in ninth, Ari Kapilivsky 12th and Lyman 13th.
Silverstein was third in the 100 back, with Ruff sixth, Lobban 10th and Ben Myers in 14th, and McManus and Pink were 2,3 in the 100 breast, separated by just 3/100th of a second. The sprint relay was another exciting race, as Kuter, Pink, French and Prezzano took second, less than a quarter of a second behind Vestal’s 200 free relay team.
In the diving competition, Sean Hingel was seventh, Ryan McCarthy 12th, Wills DeMoulin placed 14th and Charlie Shaddock 16th, all contributing to the victory.
Two pool records were set at the meet, one by Jake Fisher of Fairport, who turned in a time of 1:01.06 in the 100 breast, the other by Alex Meyer of Ithaca, for his 1:59.88 in the 200 IM.
Coach Mark Morris said he was pleased to see so many good times so early in the season. The competition took place at the Owego Free Academy on December 17.
