PITTSFORD SWIMMERS OPEN WITH CONVINCING WIN AT LOCKPORT
Ben Silverstein and Charlie Ruff didn’t waste any time setting the tone for this year’s swim season after being named captains of the defending state champion Pittsford Boy’s Swimming and Diving team. Silverstein and Ruff teamed up with Kenny Pink and Andrew Kuter to win the opening 200 yard Medley Relay at the Lockport Sprint Invitational with a record-breaking time of 1:43.65.
It was a preview of things to come, as the Panthers dominated the meet. They took first place in four of ten events and scored 430.5 total points, more than a hundred points ahead of their closest rival, Penfield. Other first place finishes for Pittsford included Wills DeMoulin, with 119.55 points in diving, Kuter with a 10.73 in the 25 free, and Pink with a 29.81 in the 50 breast.
“It was especially sweet to reclaim the medley record,” said Silverstein, who helped Pittsford set a record in the event in 2003, only to see it fall to a strong Penfield relay team last year.
With nine teams competing at Lockport, the top 16 swimmers scored points for their team in each event. It was an opportunity for this year’s Pittsford team to demonstrate that it had the talent and depth that helped the Panthers claim three straight New York State championships over the past three seasons.
In the second event of the day, the 100 free, Ruff placed fourth and Kuter, Nathan French and Jimmy Prezzano finished 7,8,9. In the 100 IM, Pink was third, Silverstein a tenth of a second behind his teammate in fourth, and Sean McManus was seventh.
In addition to Kuter’s victory in the 25 free, Dan Locke placed fifth and Prezzano came in eighth. Ryan McCarthy was fourth in diving, to complement DeMoulin’s victory. Alex Byrd and Scott Lasher, two new additions to Pittsford diving, placed 11th and 12th. Ruff claimed a bronze medal with third place in the 50 butterfly, with Dan Locke eighth. Kuter picked up a silver in the 50 free with a second place finish, with Prezzano in sixth and Silverstein in seventh place.
Silverstein added a silver medal for his second place time of 26.80 in the 50 back, with Ruff ninth, and McManus had a strong fifth place finish in the 50 breast, to complement Pink’s victory in the event.
Other notable finishes for Pittsford included fifth place in the Medley Relay by the team of Matt Lobban, Derek Lasher, Locke and McManus. In the 200 free relay, the team of Ari Kapilivsky, Anders Wahl, John Lyman and Sean McManus placed eighth and Andrew Maier, Nick Allwell, Matteo Bucci and Spencer Brown were 14th.
The evening before the Lockport Invitational, Pittsford announced its captains for the new season. In addition to Ben Silverstein and Charlie Ruff, Derek Lasher and diver Sean Hingel will co-captain this year’s team.
The meet at Lockport High School near Buffalo on December 3 was the first real test for the Pittsford swimmers and divers this year. Their first dual meet will be away this Thursday (December 8) against Section 5 rival Irondequoit.
